In case of communication failure at startup (ie eve-metrics unreachable / down), a popup appears... behind the splash screen. Of course this also prevents the splash screen from going away and so the program seems halted. - Auditing and consulting

Originally by: Ainnir Domhnal I'm also having EMMA ask me to update on every start-up. Here are some details:
Originally by: Spyder John Mine also keeps updating without success its the EveData.mdf that installs unsuccessfully.
I have no info why the auto update does not work, but I can give you an info, how to do a manual update. This is only a workaround and not the official way to apply an update!
The best way to do it is after a machine reboot, so it's sure, that the SQL server is not locking the files. You need to download this 3 file: http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Ambo/EveData_log.zip http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Ambo/EveData.zip http://dl.eve-files.com/media/corp/Ambo/EveMarketMonitorApp.zip
When downloaded, then unzip the 3 file. And then you need to rename them. original file name ---> new file name
EveData_log ---> EveData_log.ldf EveData ---> EveData.mdf EveMarketMonitorApp ---> EveMarketMonitorApp.exe
Make a copy of the c:\Program Files\EMMA\ directory to have a valid backup.
Then you need to replace the EveMarketMonitorApp.exe in the c:\Program Files\EMMA\ directory And the EveData.mdf , EveData_log.ldf in the c:\Program Files\EMMA\data directory.
When the replacement is done, you can start-up the application.
Side note: on a x64 system the directory would be: c:\Program Files (x86)\EMMA\
OK, first I re-installed EMMA, but this time I installed it into my user file space, and I chose the option to install it only for me. This seems to have stopped other problems I was having with permissions, and having to run as administrator.
The updater is still trying to update EveData.mdf amd the log file each time. The EXE is updated fine the first time from 1.3.1.0 to 1.3.2.2.
I took some md5sums of the files as follows: - after first install: 7b1a312123b44c3f5de0a69e1c22a254 *EveData.mdf 469f3ace86ff9f32d73645fb5d65f370 *EveData_log.ldf
- after first update, but before EMMA restarts: 8d97b84f46e9688c8825710376f78ac4 *EveData.mdf 67a5ff5737aceab395be6484d6ce5f0b *EveData_log.ldf So we got new files installed. Question is were they the right ones?
- after closing EMMA after creating a login and an initial group and installing API keys: 0fe5cc71fb02e4145b87ac5ba51e85a1 *EveData.mdf b91527e997087da25cf31d83546ad934 *EveData_log.ldf So the files were updated after running EMMA. Makes sense for the log files, but should the EveData.mdf file be changed? Not sure.
- after restarting EMMA and letting in update the files again: 8d97b84f46e9688c8825710376f78ac4 *EveData.mdf 67a5ff5737aceab395be6484d6ce5f0b *EveData_log.ldf So the updater put back the 2 files it downloaded last time.
So it looks like the update works, and new MDF and LDF files are installed, but either the updater doesn't recognize the new files, or the EveData.mdf file doesn't have the correct version number in it. Or it could be that the EveData.mdf file is getting changed when I run EMMA, which confuses the updater.
I downloaded the 3 files from eve-files, and renamed them, and took md5sums: c0917e73c0c03528ab22f6713522e724 *EveData.mdf eaa2311ff3e5a8a6780ec0e64d70431a *EveData_log.ldf 4a84058df992568923d0c5b92506b45e *EveMarketMonitorApp.exe
These sums match what eve-files says they should be, but do not match the files downloaded by the updater. So I could just keep running iwht EMMA and ignore the request to update each time, or I could install the files from eve-files and see. Feeling adventurous so ....
I copied the mdf. ldf, and exe files and replaced the ones in my current program folder for EMMA. And ... EMMA updater wants to update all 3 now - it thinks both the exe and mdf are version 1.3.1.0.
So I'll restore the backup and try running EMMA and just ignore the prompt to update each time.
It looks like the files on eve-files are not the 1.3.2.2 version.
Cheers.

The files what I linked are the latest files for sure.
What I can think of is, that the program does not recognise the correct versions. I have an idea what can it be, THIS but to be sure, I will try to do a clean install on a VM tomorow night, to see if I can reproduce the problem.

Are you really sure? EMMA thought they were older and listed older version numbers on the update details window. And I tried to run the exe you linked and skip the update, but it complained loudly that it didn't have the proper license key, and then exited. So it looks like a version of the exe that still expects a paid license key to be provided, which is an older version, isn't it? This all suggests that the files downloaded from eve-files were 1.3.1.0.
And yes I see your point about SQL server and the check sums. I'd not considered that SQL Server might twiddle the db file when it opens it, but I guess it might keep some housekeeping data there which changes while the CCP data doesn't.

Hmmm just did yet another clean install of EMMA from the google code page. This is getting to be a bi-weekly ritual. Once I fire it up it asks to update. If I allow it to update it tanks starting up after the update.
1/30/2010 10:10:50 AM Critical - EveMarketMonitorApp.Common.EMMAException - Error during startup Inner Exception: The database 'C:\GAMES\UTIL\EMMA\DATA\EVEDATA.MDF' cannot be opened because it is version 655. I thought the latest update fixed that problem?

Try to run only one journal update query at the time.

That error is when you try to update to a beta version, which was out for SQL 2008. You need the regular update which is for SQL2005, here I described how to do a manual update, maybe try that one.

I didn't see it with the current installer version, either before or after the upgrade attempt. The attempt to use the exe from eve-files was after running the upgrade which installed enforcer.dll 1.3.0.5 iirc, so maybe there's a disconnect there?
I don't have the management console installed, but I'll see if I can get it. The SQL I have was installed by the EMMA installer - can I add the management console to that (vista 32 bit)?

Question about Item Details. This window has a filter box for items. The box has a number of items that I have bought/sold recently (but are not on the market now), except Torrent Missiles, which I have bought/sold recently and still have some on the market. Why would the missiles not appear in the item filter list?
The order tab shows my current sell orders for the missiles - some are colored yellow, and some red (or perhaps it's dark orange). What do these colors mean?

Thanks for that. OK, I have SQL Express 2005, and I installed the SQLServer2005_SSMSEE.msi without problem. It's not running well though. When I start it I get a pop-up immediately after the console window opens. The pop-up says:
Quote: Microsoft .Net Framework Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application. If youu click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.
Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key.
There's a Details button and a Continue button. The Details button gives the exception trace. I click Continue and the program presents a connect to server login screen. I choose the default server name LUCKY\SQLEXPRESS (Lucky is my computer name), and Windows Authentication and click Connect. The program continues and shows me 1 database engine (lucky\sqlexpress) under Registered Servers. Under Object Explorer I see: LUCKY\SQLEXPRESS->Databases->System Databases, which lists 4 databases: master, model, msdb, and tempdb. I don't see anything that looks like an Eve DB.
I tried File->Open->File, but the console program crashed (immediately).
How do I find that path you mentioned, LH?

So I change SQL Express back to run as Network Service. EMMA the complained:
Quote: 01/02/2010 1:53:34 AM Critical - EveMarketMonitorApp.Common.EMMAException - Error connecting to database Inner Exception: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. and the on-screen pop-up suggested a restart. I tried restarting the SQL Express service, but no good, so I restarted Vista, and got back to the login exception.
What did I do with the console program to change the DB login?

What I can think of is if your db is still attached to the SQL then you can get this error. As it can not attach it again.
Alternatively if your db is attached to the SQL server as EMMAdatabse and EVEdata then you can change the EMMA config (EveMarketMonitorApp.exe.config) to:
<add name="EveMarketMonitorApp.Properties.Settings.EMMA_DatabaseConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=localhost\sqlexpress;database=EMMADatabase;Trusted_Connection=yes" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> <add name="EveMarketMonitorApp.Properties.Settings.ebs_DATADUMPConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=localhost\sqlexpress;database=EveData;;Integrated Security=True" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> </connectionStrings>
Then it will not try to create an instance for the connection. Personally I like this system better. However the db upgrade I can only do manually. :)

Yes, I think that was it. I had already detached the EveData db from the management console, but I think I did it wrong, and EveData.mdf or its ldf got corrupted. EMMA wouldn't load, and the management console couldn't reattach it. I couldn't even move the files elsewhere because some other program had them open. I shut down SQL Express and EMMA and anything else I could think of that might keep those files open, but they were still locked. So I rebooted Vista and then moved the EveData mdf anf ldf away, and started EMMA. EMMA was real smooth - it re-installed them! And then started. And then updated the EveData again. So I'm back to a working EMMA.
I tried attaching EveData.mdf to the management console again, and detaching it. EMMA won't run with it attached, but will when I detach it properly. I didn't try the edits to the config file - not feeling adventurous today.
BTW (back to the earlier question), was the info from dbo._getVersion useful? Looks like the updated EveData.mdf has the older version number in it.

This error is usually caused by a configuration issue with SQL server Express.
Try the following:
1. Stop the SQLEXPRESS service in control panel -> services. 2. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<WINDOWS USERNAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS 3. Restart SQLEXPRESS service.

Well the problem with the orders sounds like it's happening because EMMA is requesting the data too soon after some other program (or possibly itself) has already done so. When it fails, try looking at the API access logging page to see when the last access to the orders API was made. If the last access was less than an hour before EMMA failed to update then that's the problem.
As for the corp journal ID, it could be that CCP have not updated the corp journal API page to accept a 64-bit parameter instead of a 32-bit one. (They had to do this for the character journal page but corp page may have been missed) Is anyone else having similar problems or having the corp journal working fine? --------------------------------------

I'm not too sure where to seek clarification on this so I thought I'd ask here.
When using 'Item Report' gross margin per item (and therefore gross profit) is calculated by subtracting average sell price with cost of unit. I'm not sure what this 'cost of unit' figure is, but it's always lower than average buy price. Is there a way to calculate using the latter figure instead of the 'cost of unit' figure? The 'cost of unit' figure tends to make things more rosy than it is.

I'm not sure what this 'cost of unit' figure is, but it's always lower than average buy price. Is there a way to calculate using the latter figure instead of the 'cost of unit' figure? The 'cost of unit' figure tends to make things more rosy than it is.
the 'cost per unit' is the estimated unit cost of the item you are selling. It works like this:
1. Buy 10 units of x at 20 isk p/u 2. Buy 30 units of x at 40 isk p/u 3. Sell 15 units of x at 100 isk p/u
If you now run an item report then the cost per unit will be 26.67 isk p/u. Even if the actual items sold came from the stack bought at 40 isk p/u. This is because individual items cannot be tracked.
Instead, EMMA uses a Last in, Last out model to determine the buy price of items that you sell. i.e. from the example above, the 15 units are assumed to be the 10 units at 20 isk p/u and 5 units from the 40 isk p/u stack.
This can cause some slight oddities from time-to-time and can really cause a mess if you don't sell everything you buy (e.g. if you buy a load of missile launchers, fit some to a ship and sell the others).
However, assuming that you do sell everything you buy (I would think this is the case for most serious trader chars) then I believe it's the best solution. --------------------------------------

You should see how fun the NAV becomes for those who blew lots of battleships for the insurance. They get like (-70,000,000,000) NAV and similar.

haha! I suppose they would. I didn't really have insurance fraud in mind when designing it. --------------------------------------
