No, people need to stop being babies to be honest.
It's an extremely common human fallacy to believe that everything is different or worse "in this day and age." The fact is, racial (and gender-based for that matter) slurs are not a new idea, they are part of the system of racial and/or gender inequality that has persisted in most societies since humans realized that they could oppress each other for economic gain.
These words are invented by the dominant group, just like definitions of race, as political means in order to control and disadvantage populations, for example blacks in the US. If you use a slur that is generally understood to be offensive by a particular group, no matter the context, you are simply perpetuating the structure of oppression. Overuse in comedy does not dilute their meaning, as much as people like lisa lampanelli might like to believe it.
...why am i posting this on the eve-o forums

Edited by: Necronous on 18/09/2009 19:04:04 This is freaky. 3 days ago I never heard of the word "Sambo" ever. And I'm 26 years of age, so I've had at least a decent chance to hear it.
Then yesterday I see a Kotaku article about "racism" in the new game Scribblenauts which allows the word "Sambo" and creates what looks like a watermelon. Turns out "Sambo" is a gourd that basically looks like a Watermelon externally and the authors of Scribblenauts had never heard the word either (in a racial context that is).
Now I see this thread, weird. Otherwise I have nothing to add, just wanted to point out the strange coincidence.

Originally by: Xen Gin I don't know why people say that the word Paki is racist? I always thought it was an abbreviation of Pakistani, I'm sure that when people say things such as words we have to take into account their context.
The name of the country Pakistan is itself derived from the acronym PAKI, which stands for the four major ethnic groups living in the area: Pashtun, Afghan, Kashmiri and Indian.
That said, the Pakistanis I know regard "Paki" the same way Brits regard "Brit." No big deal.

True enough, but the best way to subvert a discourse is to devalue its symbolism through casual counter-value usage. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

I respectfully disagree. As long as racial distinctions exist and these distinctions comprise a stratified social structure, any derogatory term cannot be devalued by usage. Its symbolism comes from inequality, not usage, and thus can only be devalued by social change.

As a kid I loved the story of little black sambo, as an adult I don't find it particularly racist - if anything it's about the indigenous population getting one over the tigers. |

It's funny,
Growing up in the south I have never heard the term or name "Sambo" used within or as a racist comment. Plenty of others including:
********LIST DELETED FOR FEAR OF GETTING BANNED**********
Serioulsy, the only reference to Sambo I have ever heard of is the story of wear Little Black Sambo had to trade is hat, cape and umbrella to three different tigers so they wouldn't eat him. Then he got the tigers fighting and chasing each other around a tree until they all melted and turned into butter. Sambo then gathered his belongings, gathered up the butter and ate it with his pancakes the next morning.
Stupid story, I know. Kid's story. But that only reference I have ever seen.
Personlly, you don't offend me. It is what you do and what you say that matters.
Don't sweat it.

I'm guessing that your character creator was thinking about the Russian martial art Sambo (pronounced Sahm-bo vs. the racial term Sam-bo), judging by the fact that he is white and Stone seems to be a popular choice for the stereotypical wrestler/fighter. IIRC the racial term Sambo is only used in Latin America as well. I knew of the martial art long before I knew about the racial slur. In fact, I learned about the slur during an awkward martial arts dicussion with a black coworker.
Anyway, I'm not sure its any more offensive than "Sambo" under Dragunov's name in Tekken, in the same way British don't see their slang for "Snicker" (S******) offensive. In fact, I think most Americans would find s****** more offensive. Tough call.

Well IMO, no it's not racist..
As was said several times before, it's how a word is used / perceived, lets look at an example..
(based on how films show it) lots of blacks, in the ghettos etc, will call each other '*****' (not sure if that will be censored) but they use it in a way that is NOT offensive to each other.. yet the rest of the world, if someone said that word, would see it as a racist slur...
The words themselves mean nothing, it's the comntext they are used in that matter, unfortunately, the PC brigade screwed us all over, hence now schools don't have blackboards, there is no such thing as a 'black bin bag' and worst of all, they got rid of teh robinsons gollywog .. gtfo !!
words mean NOTHING.. the way they are used mean everything ....
