Quote: eve api will be disabled this weekend reported by CCP Wrangler | 2009.09.18 12:27:01
The EVE API will be disabled this weekend on Saturday, September 19 at approximately 14:00 UTC. We will enable it again on Monday, September 21 during the scheduled downtime. We are disabling the EVE API to minimize the risk of any issues on Tranquility during the Alliance Tournament.
This is not intended to be a major gripe session, because I can understand your reasons for doing this. Honestly, I can. But... The simple fact is that the majority of paid subscriptions have little to nothing to do with the Alliance Tournament.
Don't get me wrong, I am not disparaging the tourney, but to disable a component of the game (even one used OOG) to ensure a performance benefit of a few seems to be a rather ... what is the word... biased? Unfair? Shortsighted? Favoritism?
Now like I said, this is not such a huge deal for me, and I CAN understand why you did it - but - I hope you do not get it in your head to be doing things like this on a regular basis.
I know the tourney is exciting - and I watched most of the first 5 tourneys myself, but, I don't really like it when bits of the game get packed up and put in a closet, affecting ALL of the players of EVE, for the sake of only SOME of the players in EVE.
Flame on if you want. This is just my opinion/suggestion/rant.
Signed, One of the schleps who aren't in the tourney, but still plays the game.

The API isn't essential to any aspect of the game, so I don't see where the issue is.

Yup, I expected that response. And, your not wrong, really.
But I manage more than one account - and I am a casual player. I cannot always log in to check my skills, and the queue has given me the chance to plan out and complete some shorter skills - but only because I can set it up and let it go. I cram in several skills and can only add a new one when the queue permits. I sometimes have to plan this out to the 1/2 hour in a day that I CAN log in to change my skills to keep the training going. The API lets me keep an eye on my training progress.
So, ya. It isn't essential, but taking it away to make sure than things run smoothly for those who participate in the tourney seems kinda like favoritism to me.

No actually he is wrong. Totally wrong.
Corp financial administration cannot be carried out from with the graphical client at all because it provides no financial history beyond 7 days after which time it is purged from the database.
The only way to administer a corp's finanacial activities is via the API, so shutting it off unannounced sucks arse.
I know it was announced somewhere, I still haven't found out where though, no sticky in the GD or Issues and Workarounds forum, no popup on log in to the game so wherever they did announce it was pretty pointless.

Sisi is a testing environment, which means it's not always stable. You can't really host an event on it. --Vel

I go through about 1k-1.5k market transactions a day on weekends, and built an ap to track what I bought and where via the API. Without the API I know how much I bought, but I have no idea where it is. |

Ditto to some of the above... I need the API to manage my trading activities, turning it of has reduced my ability to play and enjoy the game this weekend.
The OP makes a good point.

Hmm, good points. I didn't think of trading and corp issues, but the API would be important for those too.
Anyways, this wasn't supposed to be a rant thread (and it isn't now, either), I was hoping to make a point with CCP, so they don't start treating the rest of us like second class citizens whenever there is a tournament. I just hope the devs read EVE General Discussion.

Wasn't the API disabled for this Alliance Tournament because the TQ server has been acting up, and they think the API is a possible culprit?
Nevertheless, this is a very good point that needs to be raised (and hopefully dealt with) before the next Alliance Tournament. |

I totally agree with the OP! It is annoying even from single account people like myself, but it's good PR!

The API was disabled as it is flacky. Last week the server went down due to API issues.
They dont want the server going down in the middle of the tourny so they dropped the API..
Yes, this also means they havent fixed the API issue. I expect a dev blog about it at the time of the next upgrade...
There is no other reason for the API going down.

IIRC there is a devblog that says they want to move the API to be seperate from tranquility so that it won't crash tranquility if anything happens to it.

And whisper recently said that there is no feasable way of doing it at this time due to both hardware and coding limitations. Though they are "Still looking into possibilities" _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

Is the DB they're using so pathetic that they can't just have the API read from a replicated slave or 3? They're already using replication for disaster recovery... right?

back in MY day we didn't have an API to play EVE with, and we managed to survive. The Alliance Tournament (which I don't have much interest in for the record) is like the Olympics of EVE, you just have to allow for it. Yes, its an inconvenience and an annoyance, but its only a weekend, you'll survive.

Back in MY day we didn't have EVE, and we managed to survive. So I guess I shouldn't complain when they shut it down completely, right??

Exactly, there was once a time when playing the game meant you played the game. *gasp* I know right?

Honestly, tournament or not, if the API was causing issues it should have been taken offline during the weekend anyway as that's the busiest playtime.
Yes, it's an inconvenience to a lot of people, but so is the server crashing like last weekend.

Wrong way round. Turning it off benefits the many by not having a crashing server and is only a detriment to the few traders, corps and heavy account users. You should be thankful that there was an alliance tournament to push the decision to off.
