Starting out as a miner and having been unsuccessful in the few pew-pew encounters I've had, I've busily worked on char PvP skills and now it's time to go out and learn how to fight. So what I'd like to know is, what's the "best" (everyone has an opinion and that's what I'm looking for, opinions) gall t1 frig to start out in and what's a good fit? I can fit a full t2 tank and hybrid fit (only t1 NOS and webs/scrams though).
Any advice outside of "You should fly *insert other race here* frigs" is much appreciated.

I'd say an incursus, it is fast, and can do considerable damage with the right modules. It is, however, best used in a group. There are some people who like the Tristan, and fitted with neuts it can be a considerable foe, but I don't like how it looks.
There is also lots to be said for the maulus, while it fields one turret less, that slot can be used for a nos, and it adds another drone and a faster lock and longer range. It is a bit shy on the grid though.
Google fittings, you might see something you can both fit and that fit your playing style.

I started my PvP career by flying an Incursus. The Tristan isn't bad but it's tough to use for new characters due to the dual weapon systems and tight CPU/Grid. The Incursus is easier to get into and use effectively with less SP. I used a fit like this early on:
Quote: [Incursus, Newb] 200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I Micro Auxiliary Power Core I
1MN MicroWarpdrive I J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator
Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Anode Light Neutron Particle Cannon I, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Obviously things have changed since I was a newb and you're now way more vulnerable with just a MWD on but as an upside you can now fit super cheap rigs on your frigs as well. ----- The Python Cartel - My Pirate Blog |

Hi all,
I've started training frigs for PVP staying in t1 meta 0 for now (until learning the basics).
My first try has been the Incursus, and it seems to work very well. Her behavior is very simple: approach very quickly to opponent (MWD or AB), scramb and web, and focus on DPS after that.
I have 3 Ion blasters with antimatter in the highs, AB, scramb and web in the middles (this is pretty standard) and my main doubts are in the lows. I have finished with a damage control and small armor rep, but then the ship is no cap stable...
She's a very powerful ship versus other frigates, but I'd want to finetune her a bit more...
(right now I do 70 dps, with the hobgoblin, and have 2200 HP)
Thanks!

Some meta 1-2-3 items are cheaper then plain tech1...
Its prity normal to not be cap stable in pvp, if you can not kill it in the first 60sec, chances are great backup is underway to kill you.
But a webber on a frig if you solo pvp is not necesery the best option with limited slots. The next setup drains the opponent cap a bit and got a booster to solve your cap problems (if 50s dont make you stable use larger ones, you have cargo enough). The scram disables the enemy MWD, so he prob wont get away, if he does get away he is flying something that actualy could kill you more easy also :P
I bet there will be better fittings posted soon but here is a quick setup I made:
[Incursus, Incursus] Damage Control I Small Armor Repairer I
Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters Warp Scrambler I Micro Capacitor Booster I, Cap Booster 50
Small 'Ghoul' Energy Siphon I Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I, Antimatter Charge S Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I, Antimatter Charge S
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]

Tristan highs, two rockets two blasters Incursus highs, three blasters
Tristan lows, 200 plate rep dc Incursus lows, 200 plate dc
Mids, AB scram web or TD.
Why TD? Because a ship that can kite you (Rifter springs to mind) will have a web and be faster than you anyway. Instead of fitting a web yourself, you can make it unable to hit you in its kiting zone by lowering its falloff.
Why web? Because without a web cruisers will probably be able to kite you enough to kill you. Then again a cruiser pilot who's smart enough to kite you will kill you anyway.

Roland, Layna, I don't fully understand your choices. I think the main point of the Incursus is her DPS cappacity at low range (blasters) and speed (quick orbiting at low range). If you're orbiting at low range, a TD doesn't cause many effect, I suppose. And if you lose a turret slot for a drainer, you lose the superior DPS ability... Am I forgotting something, or am I using the wrong strategy? (I'm thinking in fr vs fr)
Thanks!

Hey,
Pick an Incursus with 200mm plate for hunting Interceptors and other Frigates, orbit at 500km open fire and pray your buffer lasts long enough. But if you want to do some pirating or tackle bigger ships, pick a Tristan, it can fit a SAR and has great tracking for killing drones. Personaly i fit 100mm and a NOS/Neut combo (it kills active ratter tanks fairly easily) on my Tristan but it requires Engineering 5.

I like this. Costs 10mil+- per pop.
[Incursus, Ab+DPS] Damage Control II Overdrive Injector System II
Monopropellant I Hydrazine Boosters J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator
Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S Light Neutron Blaster II, Caldari Navy Antimatter Charge S
Small Ancillary Current Router I Small Hybrid Burst Aerator I Small Hybrid Metastasis Adjuster I
Warrior II x1
164DPS with heat and a ZGS100, 152 without heat.
You can get 10 more DPS by switching 2 guns to Ions and going with Burst and Collision Rigs, but then you lose some tracking and range.
No tank means this is a sprint to the finish stay close stay fast and melt face.

incursus all the way man. stick blasters on it and drones in it and youll be popping people in no time. it can pack a mean punch and is relatively survival-friendly if you keep your common sense hat on: avoid droneboats + neuts, get away from anything which can kite you if you dont get the jump on it (and if you do, keep it from mwd'ing with a scram and keep it slowed down with a web and youll be fine.)
