When I first read that blog over two years ago about Asteroid Belts being moved from a static position to Exploration, I was quite excited to see that happen, no more just parking a Hulk in the top belt.
Back then I was a Miner, now not so much (Mining could use some of that love that Exploration got) as I've found PvP much more fun, but the belts are still static and rather...plain and boring. I do like the concept and thought behind Mining and I did have fun back then with my Hulk, but currently its so...dull. Moving the asteroid belts to Exploration and maybe do a big revamp (Mining might be more fun if it required some more user input) would go a long way. There are dozens of topics in the Idea forum about making Mining more entertaining.
Moving them to Exploration would make more use of that fancy new Exploration system as well as possibly hinder macro miners. Since that blog I haven't really heard much about this, any update or has the idea been thrown into the bin that is Rancer?
Anything at all on the Mining front or should I stay in my Pilgrim and sell my Hulk right now? ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

I still have that dev blog book marked my self, this is the whole reason I starting training the scanner and probing skills ready for this to go live. It would be nice to hear this is happening, there was some talk (I think it was on the science and industry forum) about changes to the mining/production systems CCP my be looking at for the winter expansion.
This would fit in nicely and if they removed the basic loot form missions it would also allow them to dynamically control the supply of minerals. If the price starts getting two hi, alter the spawn rates to compensate. They could also easily control the load on the servers by adjusting the probability of a spawn in a busy system. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Market is what makes the game, make making the market fun. It's more industrial based anyhow.

Edited by: Taedrin on 25/09/2009 01:23:16 Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Prism X a database developer, and has no say in game design decisions? After all, if he had any say in things, he would have removed bookmarks from the game entirely a LOOOONNNNGGG time ago.
Gonna have to say, though, that I would greatly approve of an industrial expansion.

Doesn't mean Mining has to be eyestrainingly dull.
The only real fun I had Mining was back when I had my old and trusy 8xMiner II Rokh. Staggered, ore came in all the time, giving me something to do amidst corp chats and scouring the market. In a Hulk, all you gotta is fly to the top belt, hit the three biggest roids in sight and then go watch South Park or Stargate and check in every 3 mins. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

It shouldnt be that big a change as this functionality already exists in w-space, and with grav sites K-space.

I like static belts. Moving random belts make no sense.
What I would like to see is proper asteroid belts, ringed around the enitre system. And you would actually need to search in the belt for proper ore.
With huge lumbering rocks that takes ages to deplete, not the small pebbles we got now.
This would give incentive to actually mount a mineing OP that inclued proper survey scans, often more of them, and proper fleet placements in the belts (remembering to get BMs etc). Now the survey scanner only gives info about "this rock will depelte in 1-3 strip miner cycles, how fun!".
Make scanning for rock composition, and total numbers something worth doing. And make all ore types appear everywhere, just the more rare ones more often in 0.0 and low sec. After all if someone actually scans a lot (surveying), he might find a gold mine so to speak (even in high sec), and if more find the same "vein", competition might arise for it. Or he can chose to keep it secret and hope nobody scans teh same vein.
This would give mining some more dynamics that rewards the good surveyer (maby make the cov ops ships get bonuses to survey probes?) and team effort to find proper rocks and mine that one, and "penalize" the lazy miner that will not bother to scan just mine happily away at teh first rock hee fined with random plain ore.
But moving from random small AB segements to proper big belts like in RL would be a huge step. Tho some mechanings for warpin points and such would need to be reworked
Having random belt appear here and there is imo stupid. Rocks do not jump places and disapear from space.
Come on guys, we need to think bigger then within the current mechanics if we really want some good changes

Make changes to asteroid belts - a lot more roids and bigger roids. Remove names for dense, condensed etc, just leave generic names like veldspar, omber, kernite. Increase the difference between the (example) veldspar, dense veldspar, condensed veldspar, by a lot. Only by survey should you find types of the asteroids. Its mining so you can't really create something interesting, you can add some minigames that would increase amount you mine (not playing it gives you the default mining amount). I don't really know, since I'm "ok" with checking every minute or so, because I'm mining in windowed mode, while watching a tv show or smth.

The problem with having "proper" belt is that the search would be a right pain in the rear. In a proper belt, the asteroids would be some 6 million km apart, so the range of the ore scanner would have to be… ehm… slightly buffed. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

Miners should not be forced to learn to be scanner/explorers. You are taking 2 professions and forcing one to need the other.
However there are already scannable Gravametric sites out there if you really want to scan before you mine!
And if you are really bored why not do what I am doing and go mining in WH space. A fully rigged Orca full of Arkanor is a wonderful sight. ------------------------ Jint Hikaru - Miner / Salvager / Explorer "I've got a couple of Strippers on my ship... and they just love to dance!" ------------------------ |

Gravimetric sites are severly limited in their ore and don't provide much entertainment, all you gotta do is find it. This is more about the actual Mining itself.
Mining Arkonor in WHs isn't all that much more exciting if you know what you're doing. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

But then you wouldn't need to probe them down very often. A 1km rock contains about 525 freighter loads of material. It'll take a while to grind and haul that. Also you're assuming perfectly uniform density, which isn't justified. Asteroids are often found in "families" of a dozen, or even a hundred rocks.
(And, you know, the ore scanner doesn't find asteroids, it just analyses them.)

Well that depends I suppose in how CCP would implement system wide belts. There would probably only be one system belt, but you could in theory scan down any part of it. Instead of a few belts in a list, you'd have whole sections of the system wide belt all to yourself. Might be nice if some rarer ores showed up in them in small quantities. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

Depends, if Miners (and Pirates) feel safer at a belt that isn't on the list, they might be a lot easier to probe/scan and gank. It would be an incentive to go to low-sec, adding more prey for the predators. I suppose there could be both static (publicly known) belts and scan belts (not Gravs). ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

Considering this is not an FPS, don't be stupid.

Can you honestly say that undocking, warping to a belt, turning on a laser then re-docking is fun?
This is an mmo, it evolves, it has to in order to survive in the mmo market. Whats wrong with trying something new?
Instead of nay saying, feel free to offer ideas.

Interesting, but hard to implement, especially considering each roid could move off grid and away from each other. There would have to be a centerpoint of gravity for the asteroids to orbit. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...
