Are they worth probing out? What can I expect to find? Are they in every system, or do I need to go looking? Bear in mind I have the basic probing skills, but zero experience :)

Gravi sites in highsec are the most difficult sites to get a warpable hit on. To hit a gravimetric site in a 1.0 system you will essentially need perfect probing skills and equipment, including a covert ops frigate and specialist probes. In other highsec systems it might be marginally easier, but it's still the most difficult type to attempt.
If you find one, you can expect to discover great amounts of ores commonly found in lowsec, so it's usually quite profitable. However, it's worth noting that while Gravi sites only have a single spawn of quite weak rats, once that spawn is dead the site can despawn once you warp out. Either mine with two characters, keeping the miner in the site and the hauler doing the moving. Or do it the riskier way and mine the whole site into a single can, bookmark it and get your hauler, then fly to the bookmark. -----

Edited by: Tau Cabalander on 25/09/2009 22:34:08 Most of the sites I've found contain Omber, Kernite, and Jaspet. Hemorphite as well as Hedbergite sites are pretty rare.
Small sites are easy to scan, and one Hulk can clear quickly. They are the most common in hisec.
Medium are hard to scan, and keep a Hulk busy for a while. They are uncommon in hisec.
Large are very hard to scan, and will keep many Hulks busy for days. They are very rare in hisec. I've only seen one.
Overall I wouldn't go looking for them.

I keep bumping into large grav sites in hisec, and all of them that I've come across so far contain large amounts of Kernite and Omber. Omber of course being relatively useless in hisec, Kernite being relatively valuable.
They are worth probing out if you enjoy the quiet relaxed life of a miner :)

lol @ being difficult to scan out. I run into them quite often, don't have issues scanning them out. It's really just about placement of the probes. I can scan out large sites using combat probes.

Found a large Hedbergite site in high sec while looking for a WH. It will last until DT. After DT it will despawn, rats types are as per system.

It will last until the third downtime after the first person visits it or until it is mined out.

QFT ^^
In my experience, grav sites are no more difficult to probe out than other sites, and last about 3 days before despawning. Sites with higher end minerals are more difficult to scan than the sites with lower end minerals.
Once found, Grav site behave very much like belts. There are usually rats there when you first arrive, and the rats spawn periodically afterwards.
The rats are the deadspace version of the rats normal found in the system's asteroid belts (eg. Gisti, Core, Centi, etc)
