Could anyone advise me on indispensable modules to fit on my Catalyst (Gallente Destroyer). This fine vessel is blessed with eight high slots, three low slots but, unfortunately, only two medium slots. These medium slots presently house a shield booster and shield extender. I'm looking for a module that functions as a warp core stabiliser (having been warp scrambled recently), but my only available slots are high slots ... Also, I'd like some extra velocity (but my afterburner also requires a medium slot). I don't need to fill my high slots with weapons, and I currently have two (potentially three high grade slots available). You help would be appreciated! Aganippe.
PS. I haven't investigated the glories of Rigs yet, nor do I have the Jury Rigging skill under my belt.

What do you plan to use your destroyer for?

Well, that depends on what you're going to do with your destroyer.
Are you ratting? If so, where are you ratting? Low-sec, 0.0? Or are you doing missions or what?

At the moment, I'm running missions, and hoping to graduate soon from Level 1 (I'm about to embark on the final part of my Epic Arc: Burning the Hive). After that, who knows? I feel in my bones that I'll remain a combat-oriented mission-runner ...

For missions don't worry about fitting a warp stab. Frigates are the only things that will scram you and a Cat is designed to kill frigs. Put a good named AB on it and maybe a target painter or web in the other slot. I usually run a Damage control, an armor plate, and a small repper in the lows. You are flying a Gallente ship, shields are just the red line above your armor.
Fit as many 125mms as you can with ammo for long and close range (I use lead and antimatter respectively) and don't forget your drone.

Thanks, I have forgotten my drone! What is an 'AB' by the way ... An armour booster? I'm having success with my hybrid turrets (railguns and blasters: remembering the 'don't mix guns!' advice), but I do have those two / three free high slots. The low slots currently house a magnetic field stabiliser, a power diagnostic system and a armour repair system. I'm currently training up my gunnery skill, and am hoping to gain skills in trajectory analysis. I recently acquired a tracking computer which I'm gagging to try out.

And here's a free tip fer ya, don't take that destroyer into missions higher than level 1.

Gotcha, thanks. Not above Level 1? Do you think I should be considering an upgrade to a cruiser? In some ways, my previous ship (an Incursus Frigate) was superior to my Cat (which I like un some ways, but not others).

So, with Gallente ships I should concentrate on enhancing armour rather than shields? This is 'armour tanking'?

Yeah, Gallente ships are better at focusing on armor for defense than shields. There are a couple shield setups that work, but in general, armor works best.
You'll want to upgrade to cruisers for level 2's definitely. With high skills you could probably do them in a destroyer, but a cruiser will be much easier.
Destroyers aren't really very good combat ships in general. While 8 high slots looks good, you still only have a couple low and medium, which really limits your defensive options. Additionally, you're using frigate sized modules on a ship nearly the size of a cruiser. What that means is, it is much easier for enemies to hit you, and hit you for higher damage, while you're still using modules for something much smaller.
If you're handling level 1 missions with it, that's perfectly fine. You'll want to keep that up until you can fly a cruiser, and have the skills to fit cruiser sized modules (medium guns, better fitting skills, things like that). You could also look into working on drone skills mostly, and getting the Vexor cruiser. The Vexor is an awesome ship for mission running.

Destroyers are highly specialized. They do one thing and one thing only, kill little things. Level 2 missions have cruisers in them that will tear a destroyer to shreds. So yes, for level 2s you want a cruiser. For 3s you want a battle-cruiser and for 4s you want a battleship. This is a general rule and there are exceptions, especially for the Caldari.
Gallente ships are armor tankers but many can shield tank. For mission running though, it is best to stick with armor tanking.
The average Gallente mission runner uses armor tanking drone ships. So if you want to be an effective mission runner you'll train drone skills as high as you can and fly drone boats.

8x 125mm Railgun
1x Afterburner 1x Cap Recharger
1x Small Armor Repairer 1x Magnetic Stabilizer 1x Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane
This is what I fit through my level 1 missions, and it works for a good amount of lvl 2's. Feel free to alter the guns to your tastes, but the lows and mids give you a decent mix of speed and tank. You will run into some capacitor issues, so you can always swap out the low-slot EANM for a Capacitor Relay. --------------------------------- But courage which goes against military expediency is stupidity, or, if it is insisted upon by a commander, irresponsibility. -Erwin Rommel |

This is great stuff. Thank you. I'm just hesitant to whip off my shield booster and shield extender (thus freeing up those two valuable med slots). The prospect of not having that nice, solid outer red line of shield is worrisome! Still, if I boost my armour with care, life will go on! A great idea to go with 125mm railguns, especially since I've worked up my railgun specialisation skill.
Re the move to a destroyer. Will I have to start completely from scratch in all of those skills where I need to move from small to medium?

Most skills transfer from one ship to the next. But you will have to start at the beginning with medium hybrids 1.
It sounds to me like you'd be better off going Caldari. If you like running missions and you like seeing that top bar full then Caldari ships are for you.

Thanks. A tempting proposition! Still, once Gallente ... Who knows. A bit of pain starting afresh for 'medium', especially since my 100% training speed bonus has now ended Hey, it's progress!

In the medium/long run you would save a LOT of skill training time going Caldari. You would be able to do level 4 missions much sooner which mean more isks. And Caldari are the only race that can do level 4 missions well in a cruiser sized hull. It's something to think about.

I'll certainly do that. I didn't realise there was a difference between empires / races ... In the meantime, thank you all for your advice. Wish me luck with 'Burning the Hive' (railgunned up and armour tanked!). Aganippe.

I'd say get out of that cat and into a vexor, it is a lot easier, especially in burning down the hive.

It's not that there is a difference between empire races (at least not anymore, since Apocrypha release), but in the ships which they fly, or bear their namesake. For example, when you start the game and select to be: "Race-Minmatar/Bloodline-Brutor" or "Race-Caldari/Bloodline-Archura" you are doing nothing more than selecting the story you liked the best when you read them on the character selection screen. Characters now start with the same amount of attribute points distributed amongst your attributes (Intelligence, Memory, etc.).
However, the ships that come from each race have very different characteristics. In general, here's the breakdown, based on the ship characteristics, bonuses given, and the slot layout afforded each ship:
Amarr: Armor-tanking Caldari: Shield-tanking Gallente: Armor-tanking Minmatar: Shield-tanking

That's not a hard and fast rule, but a general guideline. Check out the youtube videos that CCP posted for Alliance Tournament 7, you'll learn a LOT and have fun watching them: www.youtube.com/CCPgames (select any of the AT7 videos on the right sidebar)

Well actually, all you need is gal cruiser level 4 and some decent drone skills. That's more than enough to run level 2s easily, as a vexor's main source of damage will usually be the drones. Fit it something like:
[Vexor, New Setup 2] Medium Armor Repairer I Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane I Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane I 800mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I
10MN Afterburner I Cap Recharger I Cap Recharger I
150mm Prototype I Gauss Gun, Lead Charge S 150mm Prototype I Gauss Gun, Lead Charge S 150mm Prototype I Gauss Gun, Lead Charge S 150mm Prototype I Gauss Gun, Lead Charge S Salvager I
Hammerhead I x5
Obviously T2 where possible, might wanna change the 'Energized Adaptive Nano Membrane I' or EANMs to NPC damage specific ones.
Plate is there for any screw ups, it makes sure you don't die so fast :)
