Fix the game so you don't have to wait 30 seconds after doing anything to be able to do something else?
You know, session change timers.. really could not be a bigger gripe for me with EVE than this annoying 30 second timer on everything, it makes the game clumsy and just looks really ameture. ------------------- |

The session timers are there for a reason, just because you dont know what that reason is doesnt mean its broken/clumsy etc. |

I don't care what the reason is. It's the equivelant of mounting up in WoW, dismounting, no, wait, having to wait 30 seconds before dismounting, then dismounting, then waiting another 30 seconds to get on a different mount.
It's just ridiculous, it's bad game design and makes the game wholly inaccessable to a large audience of people that just don't want to sit around like ******s slapping their ****s while waiting 30 seconds after doing something every time. I mean really what are we supposed to do in those 30 seconds every time? I find myself just alt tabbing cause there's absolutely nothing to do while waiting for it. It's ridiculous. ------------------- |

You don't understand Sirani, the reasons Gaelan mentioned are not gameplay, but server related. In the bad ol' days when there were no session timers people constantly got stuck when changing ships and immediately undocking, when they jumped into a system and quickly jumped out again etc. The session timers give the server enough time to "synch" properly so to speak, CCP can't do anything about it.

Back before session timers came in, it was a nightmare in systems with alot of people (More than 50) because it was possible for the client to get bogged down with session changes and it would end up tracking things inacurately and start lagging out while trying to keep up with all the requests. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

So it's still down to poor programming. If your game starts getting bogged down because a few people are getting in and out of their ships at the same time you really need to hire some better programmers. ------------------- |

"A few?" 50 people is not a few, especially when there is another 40,000 players online elsewhere. Sorry but in warcraft you probably have what, <1k players to a server? yeah. we fit 1000 people into a system :/ _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

TBH I don't even notice the timers. But an excellent opportunity to poke CCP about Docking and un-docking cut scenes etc etc etc. Then you could watch some Eye candy instead of alt tabbing

Do you know anything about programming or is this another ignorant rant with no background knowledge of the issues involved in running a server that has upwards of 30k clients connecting to it at even moderately busy times?
Have you ever considered that it's possibly down to good programming techniques that it's as low as 30 seconds? Yes it can be annoying at times but as was pointed out, I think you would soon be complaining when everything desynched every time you undock in a busy system.

Edited by: Gaelan Lionhardt on 02/10/2009 14:16:22 Thread started with an ignorance of game mechanics.
Quote: So it's still down to poor programming. If your game starts getting bogged down because a few people are getting in and out of their ships at the same time you really need to hire some better programmers.
Thread continues with a further ignorance of game mechanics and programming with a bit of a "I can make this game better than CCP did" thrown in for good measure.
I would recommend the OP "get a clue" as they say then come back later and post a more constructive thread, could even be about the same topic just do it in a more intelligent and open way which would allow people to respond in debate as opposed to trying to teach you something.
Threads which fail to highlight a problem and resolve, or start a debate about anything are useless and will simply lead to you being called a "troll and "flamed"
If you have an idea to replace session timers then please by all means let us know, if not... why are you posting? To tell us something we already know...? Well thanks but... we already know.

Ok I'll try.
Do we actualy need these timers every time? I was around before them so I do know why they exist however the number of times that I personly got stuck because of the bad sync could be counted on one hand.
Now if we take into account the number of hardware and DB upgrades that have been undertaken since the implementation of the timers I could well be worth looking at.
how about moving the docked timers so you can't undock before x seconds after the LAST ship change, but do not have a timer between EACH ship 'make active'
Could the timer be varied by system load? Could it be 5 seconds default but up to 30?
I guess what the OP is trying to say, but unfortunately seems to be unable to, is "Can we please re-evaluate the mechanism?"

There is actually a timer on undock after immediatly jumping into another ship only its not visible like the others it simply doesnt load up space as quick as it would otherwise... sneaky CCP heh.
I think youve got to take into account people deliberatly abusing the mechanic, and the problems it could cause if someone decided to spam the change ship function. |

Edited by: Gaelan Lionhardt on 02/10/2009 14:50:21 I find its always best to assume that a mechanic is going to be severely abused and then plan for that, because you get people like the OP here that are let loose on the internet and thats what they consider "fun"
The irony of course is the people that spam the function and cause things like this are then the ones that come to the forums and ***** about it...
