I was just wondering, why are the Siege Missile Launchers actually called Siege 'Missile' Launchers.
They fire torpedo's.
Torpedo's are not missiles.
So shouldn't they be called Siege Torpedo Launchers?
Any thoughts?

Why even Siege, why not just Torpedo Launcher or Torpedo Bay? Also, does anyone feel that the icon for a Standard Missile Launcher looks like a SAM site?

So Star Trek and Wing Commander (and probably dozens of others) are wrong for using torpedo's in space too?
The only reason torpedo's tend to be underwater in real life is because that's the only application. Torpedo's are fired by ships at other ships. That is the only definition. The only difference between real life and sci fi is the medium they are fired in. They can easily be called missiles, because they act like missiles.

I already figured this would come up. In my defence id like to call upon the fact that the big brother counterpart of the Siege Missile Launcher is actually called a Citadel Torpedo Launcher I.
So according to you these should be called Citadel Missile Launcher I's.
Names aren't very consistant if you ask me.

If you're going to produce a flawlessly consistent world where the name of the launcher is in direct proportion to the ammo used, you will have a few days work ahead of you - for no real purpose mind you. Have fun with Assault Missile launchers, Heavy Assault Missile Launchers not to even mention all turrets. Parrots, commence!

The name is from the early days of eve, when you could load more than Torps into them.
They were slow firing, but allowed for more ammo to be loaded.

The the little launchers could shoot big stuff just slowly. The big launchers shot stuff faster with less reload time. The siege launcher was the biggest launcher.

You have to admit the physics in EVE act more like underwater physics rather than in space physics. Its easier to balance things that way.

well yeah cruise kessies
anyways, it's not quite like that. the RoF was rather equal to what it is today. I remember seeing ravens with heavy launchers with torps, instead sieges cuz it had a faster RoF (smaller clip tho). You could fit a crapload of light missiles or heavy missiles or even cruise missiles in a heavy launcher, but considering that they had all relatively the same speed, anything that packed standart launchers, used cruise, and anything that packed heavies, used torps (yes, a carcal was able to shoot ****in' torps holy ****. it had bonuses to hybrids tho)
also torps had AoE, and the assault launcher was a size between the rocket and standart. ---

Yes, and any named laser called "maser" should only be able to fire microwave beams. Im more worried about torps not doing full damage to their intended targets than their name.

Edited by: ReePeR McAllem on 03/10/2009 21:52:04 A missile (British English: "miss"-"isle"; U.S. English: "missl") is, in general, a projectilełthat is, something thrown or otherwise propelled. Missiles can range from a rock thrown from a slingshot, through a crossbow or ballista bolt, to a Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) with multiple nuclear warheads. Modern ICBMs, the largest missiles currently deployed, represent the most destructive weapons ever made in human history.
Edit. In lamens terms; a missile can be anything that is launched at great velocitys. So if I threw a rubber chicken at you, that rubber chicken is now considered a 'missile'

Seriously, forget about torpedoes, forget about missiles. Nothing of that matters in EVE, this is SCIFI game!!!

This was before T2 so no Crow sweetness. But I did fly around in a Kessie with 4 cruise missiles in the tubes. It was great.
I also put a 10MN AB on it.

Well, in this game neither are rockets, but they still act like they're missiles. And IRL the Orca is a killing predator, not some slow, lumbering giant. RL definitions don't hold too well in the game, so you'll have to ignore RL terminology to some extent.

You ship is also jet-propelled, nothing wrong with that in space. And lifting-wing.. well why not, so your missile "could" fly in athmosphere, but it isn't needed.
