So if i had an extra midslot on a domi with almost equal dmg coming from heavy drones and turrets and I also had max skills relating to drones and turrets, which would be better a target painter, or a drone navigation comp. Which would potentially increase my dps more, or is there another mod that would be more useful?
PS. : This is a mission boat

Edited by: Allen Ramses on 05/10/2009 07:16:07 Assuming all was equal, a painter would increase tracking capability with your drones and turrets alike, while an Omnidirectional Tracking Link would allow your drones to increase tracking and optimal, and you wouldn't have to worry about the painter. ____________________ CCP: Catering to the cowards of a cold, harsh universe since November, 2006. |

not too worried about activating another module... just wondering what mid slot module would give me the most bang for my buck

It depends where your target will be and whether it will be fully affected by the painter.
In the optimal case, the OTL gives you 20% bonus to tracking and 20% to optimal, whereas at TPII gives you 30% base and is further affected by skills (you get 37.5% at all V:s). However, the TP has a maximum range beyond which it starts to lose effectiveness, and it doesn't improve the drone range — as it happens, the 20% optimal bonus indirectly makes that 20% tracking bonus even higher than the numbers suggest, so you only ever used drones, the OTL would be the superior choice. In my test scenario (Ogre IIs against a target at their optimal, orbiting at 300m/s), the TP gives the drones an 85% hit chance compared to 90% for the OTL.
On the other hand, if that much damage comes from the turrets, then a TP will certainly help both them and the drones (as long as the target is reasonably in range for the TP). So while you could potentially and situationally get more out of the OTL for your drones, the difference isn't that huge and the TP will probably win out in a mixed scenario. ——— “If you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡… you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.” — Karath Piki |

well most enemies in missions stay at about 35km or less besides BS's which i dont have a problem hitting im looking to gain some ability to hit cruiser/frigates, also i rarely switch out drones and tend to leave my ogres out even when facing frigate sized npcs.

The problem with the target painter isn't it's bonus (its pretty good, isolated). It's that any target where that bonus is most useful will pop way before the cycle is over, so you'll either be holding back shots or shooting in between cycles, not getting the bonus.
And ofc, if you're popping a frig.swarm with lights/mediums then you're probably not even targeting them.
Take a drone mod or the plain tracking comp, painter is too situational for non-missile PVE.

oh ya totally forgot about tracking comp... so ill just figure out which is better. i think without looking at the numbers the tracking comp is better due to the travel times of my drones which makes the OTL useless while they are travelling

I personally have 2 omni's on my domi, with cap rechargers in the rest of the mids. Helps the sentries track mid range targets, and I can even hit the battleships in AE orbiting close with them. I prefer omni's to target painters because they're passive, so no cap worries, and I don't need to worry about being in range for them (not really a problem, but it's still nice.
I would advise against a nav computer. Lights and mediums are the only ones you should be sending more than 20km away, and they move pretty fast on their own, with the nav skill making it even better. Only use heavies on really close battleships, and their travel speed while annoying, is fine for that close.

The TP is best at long range, as opposed to fitting a webber, which works well at close range. So you match up the selection with the range you plan to excel at. Blaster range fit a webber, if you fit railguns fit a TP.
