Sexual dimorphism relates to the disharmony between the male and female variations of a species. Most MMOGs are guilty of this, especially western/European games where the aesthetical ideal of male and female ranges quite dramatically but I've never seen a worse example of this than in EVE online, a game which supposedly strives for realism more than others.
Just look at the Jin Mei bloodline, the males a huge mug of a man with a purvey smile whilst the female's a tiny pale girl with a permanent "o0" expression. This makes no sense!
Also thereÆs the rather obvious difference in skin tone, hereÆs a Jin Mei male and hereÆs a Jin Mei female, someone explain to me how this works? There is no genetic justification for how these two can be of the same race/bloodline, has CCP invented the first case of sexual disethnicism? (Yes I just made up that word)
I could go on to describe the difference in age range with the options for those wanting to play an "older" female very limited. I can't help thinking that the Jin Mei bloodline was slightly rushed before they brought it out, with little communication between artists on how exactly this race was supposed to lookà

I agree, and btw they promised 'full char customization' and 'there will never be 2 char that looks the same'. Well, that is clearly false, they are all the same.

In an augmented futuristic reality where cloning is possible and redonkulous genetic asshattery (see jove), I still think it might keep in line with what can be viewed as "realistic".
The reasoning is that as our civilization grows more knowledgeable in genetic science, one can make a strong argument for genetic orientation based on societal wants and values rather than on the luck of the draw. There have been countless SciFi post genetic manipulation books, stories, and movies on the matter. Even as far back as "The Island of Dr. Moreau". So is it so far fetched to think that a cloned pilot of a starship, who spends the majority of their time in a all nutritious womb-like goo, wouldn't want to look young and desireable? Pod pilots are described as gods multiple times in the backstory, you don't think gods would simply choose what genetic makeup their next clone would be so they can look like whatever they want? Anyway, I can still see it, maybe not for planet side plebians who still mate the traditional way, but for pod pilots... we're not born, we're perfectly manufactured in every way except for our psyche. Our bodies in eve are just another wardrobe, a simple container for what we think of as "me". Self in eve is not a material value for the rich. Your body isn't you, only your mind is you. For that reason, this clone is just one of many, and I'll pick whichever one I choose to be my host later. *-------------------------* PoX IS Eve!!! BOOM!!! |

Jin Mei was designed so the ISK farmers could look at someone based on their own race, imo

Or maybe, just maybe, it was designed in the update just before CCP launched their completely separate Chinese server, Serenity.

Female characters in all games are eye candy so guys will play them more, its just like the movies.
Seriously did anyone see resident evil for the movie or did they see it for Mila running around destroying zombies?
Though I could go as far to say as guys who make female avatars are just using avatars to give a physical representation of what they think is beauty. --------------------------

All fantasy a science fiction games require the player to suspend belief on some level but they also all strive for realism wherever possible. Anything "unrealistic" that forms a crucial part of the game mechanic is permissible, after all game play has to come first but the rest has to operate within the fictional parameters defined by the games genre and backstory. Otherwise you may aswel be playing inside Salvador Dali's head, an completely implausible and illogical game ultimately offers very little satisfaction for the player.
The Jin Mei inconsistencies are not a case of mechanic before realism.

Interesting point, from looking at the weird, size zero creatures created by the fashion industry I wouldnÆt like to think what would happen if they got these trend setter were allowed free reign of genetically engineering.
If the discrepancy is due to some culturally motivated genetic engineering there should be some mention of it in the back-story.
But my point remains, they still all look the same and she still looks like sheÆs going "o0".

I'm not sure what's more impressive, your joining the vacuous "games aren't real" chorus or the testosterone smeared nugget of misogyny that followed it. If epeen chest thumping is a compensation mechanism then you must be hung like a fruit fly.
Originally by: Troye If the discrepancy is due to some culturally motivated genetic engineering
It could also be the result of selection (culturally motivated or otherwise). That's where (real) sexual dimorphism comes from, after all.

There are some biological reasons for such differences. I once read (maybe from the book linked below) that within an ethnic group female skin tones were lighter than male skin tones. I don't have access to the original source right now, but here is an article that discusses something similar from a cultural standpoint rather than the biological one. But over time these social preferences will show up in biology via evolution/selection.
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/men-women--the-secrets-of-skin-colour-796610.html
As for facial features, levels of testosterone and estrogen can affect facial features. Higher amounts of testosterone and/or less estrogen will lead to more "masculine" facial features (square jaw and narrower eyes for example) whereas higher levels estrogen and/or less testosterone will lead to more "feminine" features (more rounded or triangular face, wider eyes).
The Human Face is an interesting book that has a chapter about differences in male/female features, where the difference comes from, and how they relate to sexual attractiveness.
Hope this helps.

In 10,000 AD why aren't there sexless robot cyborgs and androids? If you are a vat clone anyways why even bother with that? Just so it makes 21st century people feel ok playing the game?

The way I see it, the faces we create at the beginning of the game do not represent the physical traits of the people whose race/bloodline we originate from.
Instead, we are all as players, simply clones of the first 24 capsuleer pilots who had left their respective empires to seek their own fortunes once they had reached immortality.
Capsuleers do not need to breed out of necessity, they live forever. Clones, the lot of us~!

Too much customization is a bad thing. I spent at least half an hour messing around with the facial features of my first Oblivion character, and I ended up with someone who looked like ****. _________

Confirming OP needs to get laid and stop drinking the feminist KoolAid.
Dude, it's just a game. You're making a big deal about skin tones and facial expressions? Dude, there are white AND black Americans. Also white, black, and Asian Jews - and yes, they are all racially Jewish and not just religiously so. They exist. Get over it. Don't even get me started on the idiocy of arguing sexual dimorphism over a freakin' facial expression.
Now, if you wanted to argue that a specific race (and not a race's ships, mind you) or a specific gender was nerfed from a gameplay perspective in terms of stats/skills available etc, then you might have a point. Until then, get out of your house and go hit up a bar.

...and the world evolved, more cyberstuff gots invented and applied. and only one mmo was left over.. it was simply called "the game" because it is the awesomeÖ :)"
then hackers applied some hacks to conduct some electroshocks to the players, but that was a not so funny different story.
