Originally by: llhloiug So, while browsing the youtube content of Fanfest 2009, I checked out HTFU, and was surprised to find, and maybe I was hearing things wrong, that the f-bomb was used in the song. That's artistic license, so I didn't think too much about it. Then I watched the footage of the keynote.... with my family. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised by the casual use of "****" during the presentation, albeit a very cool presentation. I don't know if the culture has changed at ccp, but I seem to remember their being rules as to the type of language that could be used on the forum. Does that not extend to the productions that become the face of CCP and EVE? I might be alone in this, but I think it sounded very unprofessional to hear expletives of that sort during the keynote of all things. Those are my two cents.
I'm not sure why everyone's hating on you, but it's pretty funny.
The use of "****" has become fairly common in speeches which would otherwise be considered occupying a certain level of professionalism. In University a couple of years ago I heard a few visting speakers use it, either to try and connect, or be cool, or for impact. It always fell a little flat I think. Very few people find it shocking anymore, and it's use is not exactly risque. I find it is more disappointing then anything. It seems to herald an unnecessary simplification used in place of another more interesting phrase or explanation. In other words it is a stand in for when you want to express something with impact or meaning, but can't think of the words.
All the same it's natural to use the parlance we are used to, and the use of the word "****" in public talks and such is simply a progression thats bound to happen because of that.
Edit: Oh yeah I find it infinitely amusing that they censor the word on their forums if they feel its alright for fanfest. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

I figure there was. It's more a question of presentation though. Given that the average age for players in this game is 28 (or there abouts) I say they dispense with "age appropriate" nonsense in any case.
At the same time, recruiting out of younger circles helps pay for ****. Fanfest is a public presentation of EVE and CCP though, and if you are aiming for a certain level of acceptance it makes sense to be consistent. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

Ok, op does have a point. Casual use of profanity during a presentation is not acceptable. I have done several presentations myself and when being watched by peers I have to make sure I am being professional in language and presentation.
As the op pointed out, families who could not go to fan fest do watch this on the internet, and the tone and presentation should be made for all audiences.
Oh well though, we are human and we mess up on occasion.

1) Harden the **** Up
2) Fanfest is 18+, why are you showing footage of it to your family which includes under-18s?
3) Forums are general access, so nasty words like the F-bomb (does anyone actually call it that?) and the C-bomb are redacted. [Aussie players: join channel ANZAC] |

True, but are the "fans" truely "peers"?
This is a non-professional convention with an age limit, that is for entertainment, that just so happens to involved a few presentations that may have more business-like aspects.
Why do they put the age limit on Fan Fest? My guess is that they want to be able to hang loose and have a good time shooting the **** with their fans. Not being all uptight and suitlike.
Would you expect them to hold their language at the drinking session afterwards? If not then why do they need to be uptight while presenting their boring ass power point slides?

I think CCP is cool for being so laid back. CCP use to be more laid back and had more of a sense of humor the farther back in time you go and had more fun.
I remember when TomB nerfed something and Daakkon (old player, doesn't play anymore) made a paint sig of him shooting TomB IRL. The next day he woke up to have his sig changed to one of TomB beating him down with a nerf bat, irl of course. CCP wouldn't do things like that anymore, wish they did.
Honestly like someone else said, harden the **** up. If you don't want to then you can leave.
CCP for the ****ing win.

Edited by: Quaristice on 10/10/2009 00:39:16 Dude..., like others have said, this wasnt a "keynote" speech given to investors, people high up the corporate ladder, media, etc. It was a FANNNNN FESTTTTT....a FUN event that FANS go to and get all sorts of cool treats. You need to chill out man. This isnt Crapple owner Steve Jobs giving his once-a-year blah blah keynote. It was meant all in good fun. By the looks of the people at fanfest it seems everyone was at least 18....AT LEAST. I could even say 21. Some of the girls were cute as ****!
So yeah...chill man. Do you not watch R rated movies? You remind me of my ex who was like "Ow...cuss words sting my ears". STFU and GTF over it!

Originally by: llhloiug Have you all ever been to a keynote presentation? I mean, look at the first 5-10 minutes of the presentation. One of it's purposes is to show to investors what CCP is all about. In general, profanity is not very professional, unless you're General Patton. : P
Alright, lets imagine that CCP was holding a keynote to win over investors and/or new talent. You got that picture? Great now burn that *****, this is fanfest a collection of people that love CCP's product enough to fly/swim/boat their way to Iceland for a few days of fun and boozing with CCP staff with the bonus part of being introduced to some of their upcoming new features. Not some quaint powerpoint presentation.

Compare this to the speech that hilmar gave when he showed off dust for the first time at <enter name of crazy eu e3 here>. Where there were industry experts and people he would be interested in investing. Not a single swear, very professional. Fanfest is something different entirely :)

Imagine the scene at Ilhloiug's house:
Younger son: Daddy, why are those people on youtube swearing? Daddy: I have no idea, but we better call the FCC!!! Older sister: They're drunken vikings, that's why.
And while she might be secretly dreaming of being spirited away by drunken vikings and ravaged in so many ways, it won't happen cause she's a fat american teenager precluded from the international meat market.

I agree, it's a fill-in word for people who have not developed a familiarity with all the words and idioms in their existing vocabulary which would serve to convey the message they wish to impart.
Actually curse words can be very useful when one wishes to be emphatic, as their meaning inspires the use of a specific part of the brain which deals with the evocation of emotion, therefore they impart something which other words cannot.
This is the reason why people with tourette-syndrome swear involuntarily and those with tourette-syndrome who are deaf and sign even involuntarily sign curse words, as their condition affects that area of their neurology, but not the rest of the brain's language center.
And the prodigious use of the word **** doesn't preclude one from commanding a broad lexicon of other words does it?
I concede that some people are just ill educated and cannot articulate very well without swearing. But it seems to me that the obsession that some people have with swearing betrays a very middle class set of priorities. Surely there are more important things to get upset about.
