So, while browsing the youtube content of Fanfest 2009, I checked out HTFU, and was surprised to find, and maybe I was hearing things wrong, that the f-bomb was used in the song. That's artistic license, so I didn't think too much about it. Then I watched the footage of the keynote.... with my family. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised by the casual use of "****" during the presentation, albeit a very cool presentation. I don't know if the culture has changed at ccp, but I seem to remember their being rules as to the type of language that could be used on the forum. Does that not extend to the productions that become the face of CCP and EVE? I might be alone in this, but I think it sounded very unprofessional to hear expletives of that sort during the keynote of all things. Those are my two cents.

Have you all ever been to a keynote presentation? I mean, look at the first 5-10 minutes of the presentation. One of it's purposes is to show to investors what CCP is all about. In general, profanity is not very professional, unless you're General Patton. : P |

Although I understand what you are saying, this was not a convention to gather potential investors or something similarly as serious. It was a festivle for the, as Blane said above, 18 year old individuals that play EVE that wanted to go to Iceland for a fan based celebration/recognition. So I see why things were more lax then one may have expected.

It's not that it's offensive, but rather that it's unprofessional and unnecessary. I suppose CCP doesn't need to worry about their image though. They have their niche group. |

Being over 18 and drinking does not really give free rein to speaking poorly; but it does describe the general result of those two conditions, unfortunately. |

Not everyone are that sensitive to swear words. I understand the thread maker wanting to protect his children, but I don't necessarily understand why.
But they should put explicit language lable on that video.
HTFU might have made the presentation less professional, but it made it more CCP.

When used by adults, swear-words are a reasonable and useful addition to vocabulary.
However, when used by children, they're a horrible menace that destroys their innocence, ****s their childhood, and sodomizes their dolls.
Swear words are no worse when used by children than by adults. I don't get why people use swearwords and then go ape**** when their children do the same thing.

Whoop whoop, I'm the space police!
To the op, you have a valid point, and the rampant use of the f-word can be seen as unprofessional. However, a speaker must make their presentation for their target audience, and I suppose the target audience is for 13+ and up (as the game is). If you were offended you should have turned it off rather than let your family hear the f-bomb. Then watched it later alone or with an audience that could handle the language. CCP has a right to say what they want and they have to be responsible for that. But so does everybody watching. If enough people got up and left or didn't watch it on youtube, maybe CCP won't use course language next year.

So movies that use the F-bomb are just as bad then? They are after all professional actors and should behave like angels?
During a robbery scene in a drama movie about a victim at a bank robbery getting shot
Robber: Uhm... Hands in the air and stuff? Please? Victim: PLEEEASE DON'T SHOOT ME MISTER, i have children. God, please someone think of the children! Robber: Uhm... Please do as i say, mmkay? Victim: But... Madness? Thiiis iiis SPART ... uhm, wrong script. Robber: Ey? Just lie on the floor and don't talk no more. Please? Victim: Excuse me, i think you forgot "SIR"? Robber: Oh, I'm sorry SIR. Could you PLEASE lie on the floor and be quiet, SIR? Victim: But you don't have the right to do this, i have my rights! Robber: Oh yes... The rights... I forgot, have a good day!
Robber leaves the scene.
Now, seriously??? REALLY??? OMFG!?!?!?111?
Please note that each of the clips hosted on that youtube site has an ESRB rating. Also, please note that the Fanfest is hosted by CCP FOR EVE PLAYERS. Finally, out of all the friends i have. Anywhere on this planet. Not a single one gives a **** about the use of the word. I'm not sure why everyone's hating on you, but it's pretty funny.
The use of "****" has become fairly common in speeches which would otherwise be considered occupying a certain level of professionalism. In University a couple of years ago I heard a few visting speakers use it, either to try and connect, or be cool, or for impact. It always fell a little flat I think. Very few people find it shocking anymore, and it's use is not exactly risque. I find it is more disappointing then anything. It seems to herald an unnecessary simplification used in place of another more interesting phrase or explanation. In other words it is a stand in for when you want to express something with impact or meaning, but can't think of the words.
All the same it's natural to use the parlance we are used to, and the use of the word "****" in public talks and such is simply a progression thats bound to happen because of that.
Edit: Oh yeah I find it infinitely amusing that they censor the word on their forums if they feel its alright for fanfest. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

I figure there was. It's more a question of presentation though. Given that the average age for players in this game is 28 (or there abouts) I say they dispense with "age appropriate" nonsense in any case.
At the same time, recruiting out of younger circles helps pay for ****. Fanfest is a public presentation of EVE and CCP though, and if you are aiming for a certain level of acceptance it makes sense to be consistent. -Jin Nib Trading on behalf of Opera Noir since: 2009.03.02 03:53:00

Ok, op does have a point. Casual use of profanity during a presentation is not acceptable. I have done several presentations myself and when being watched by peers I have to make sure I am being professional in language and presentation.
As the op pointed out, families who could not go to fan fest do watch this on the internet, and the tone and presentation should be made for all audiences.

True, but are the "fans" truely "peers"?
This is a non-professional convention with an age limit, that is for entertainment, that just so happens to involved a few presentations that may have more business-like aspects.
Why do they put the age limit on Fan Fest? My guess is that they want to be able to hang loose and have a good time shooting the **** with their fans. Not being all uptight and suitlike.
Would you expect them to hold their language at the drinking session afterwards? If not then why do they need to be uptight while presenting their boring ass power point slides?

I think CCP is cool for being so laid back. CCP use to be more laid back and had more of a sense of humor the farther back in time you go and had more fun.
I remember when TomB nerfed something and Daakkon (old player, doesn't play anymore) made a paint sig of him shooting TomB IRL. The next day he woke up to have his sig changed to one of TomB beating him down with a nerf bat, irl of course. CCP wouldn't do things like that anymore, wish they did.

Compare this to the speech that hilmar gave when he showed off dust for the first time at <enter name of crazy eu e3 here>. Where there were industry experts and people he would be interested in investing. Not a single swear, very professional. Fanfest is something different entirely :)

Actually curse words can be very useful when one wishes to be emphatic, as their meaning inspires the use of a specific part of the brain which deals with the evocation of emotion, therefore they impart something which other words cannot.
This is the reason why people with tourette-syndrome swear involuntarily and those with tourette-syndrome who are deaf and sign even involuntarily sign curse words, as their condition affects that area of their neurology, but not the rest of the brain's language center.
And the prodigious use of the word **** doesn't preclude one from commanding a broad lexicon of other words does it?
I concede that some people are just ill educated and cannot articulate very well without swearing. But it seems to me that the obsession that some people have with swearing betrays a very middle class set of priorities. Surely there are more important things to get upset about.

Forum posters are generally idiots - this thread alone shows that the percentage is at least 80%.
Language is quite an interesting subject. What some consider profane or vulgar is acceptable to others. Luckily there is no central authority on the matter so all is well. If a person is offended then they can just leave just like those who threaten to quit eve with the exception of you probably don't want their stuff since it might be some half eaten bran muffin or a bag of dried prunes.
CCP has its own culture and is allowed to do as it sees fit. Contrary to popular belief by you worker bee peons who contribute nothing to society, your masters in the corporate boardroom swear all the time. In fact, quite a bit of it happens out in public, such as on the golf course, even during business hours! You however might be restricted from swearing due to some policy or rule set up by the company.
But understand that the policy is there for your own protection. For without that rule there would be nothing to stop you from reverting back to your native tongue in which every second or third word would make the late Mr. Carlin proud. Then your masters would have no other choice but to fling you back out into society without a master to dictate what you are to do for 8 hours or so a day. With that amount of freedom the likelihood of you resorting to some criminal activity is extremely high and eventually the authorities will put you where you should have been in the first place, caged up like an animal prevented from harming society.
For the rest of us civilized productive members of society, we naturally know when to use such language so policies designed to control the simpletons need not apply to us. Peons, being indoctrinated by the guise of professionalism are indeed often offended when they hear this type of language, but since they are just peons, their opinions don't matter anyhow.
And before the idiots start spewing about you can't this and that - yes you can swear in a courtroom, just ask permission from the judge or advise prior to stating; parliaments are a different story, but it still happens and religious representatives are actually quite comical in their use of expletives. Then again, religion is just another control mechanism for the masses (has been doing a pretty good job but lately has been slipping) of peons who would without a doubt leave this planet to the roaches.

This. Swear words are just as much a part of vocabulary as anything else. Eve players swear, Eve devs swear, there were no children present to have their fragile little minds warped - whats the problem? Only possible problem i see is the op not wondering why exactly there was an age limit in the first place before showing his kids. For all he knew it could have ended with a naked Oveur running naked across the stage with a beer keg under one arm and an exotic dancer under the other.

Swear words are not bad in themselves, it is the manner in which they are used that makes for offensive language.
Using them to drive a point home or reinforce an adjective is perfectly acceptable provided you don't overdo it, they act as a contrast colour.
Unfortunately the linguistic prowess of the younger generations is sadly lacking so they tend to exchange every other word with swear words out of ignorance making their speech neither attractive nor acceptable.
Besides, FF is and was a private party as you can't get in off the street and the site where CCP posted them (YouTube) is plastered with cautions and warnings, so if your foot hurts you probably shouldn't have shot it.

Fanfest being what it is (18+), will you tell me why all of the fanfest videos on youtube say "T for fictional violence" at the beginning. I'm merely suggesting that if they post public accessible content to the internet, CCP should be careful so that the rating matches the actual content (i.e. M for language).

Only in prudish countries like the US. In the much saner countries of Europe, that stuff wouldn't even get it up to a 11+ rating.

So true.
"F-bonbs" and the like are not removed from foreign TV where I live (Northern Europe), so they turn up in prime-time movies, documentaries, interviews. Everyone knows what the words mean. I don't mean people are "tolerant" either - we *know* that hearing and understanding the words for normal activities and things does no harm.
Something to reflect on: Our kids have fewer unwanted pregnancies and lower STD incidence than US kids. But they have a lot more sex. Which system would *you* prefer to live in?

No one outside the US gives a crap. The entire world has moved on from 19th century 'morals and values' because you know, we're not in the 19th century anymore. A lot of people in the US however think that it's allright to push those outdated things onto everyone else, 'because they're right and everyone else is wrong'.
And now someone comes to complain about adults being adults, having some fun. Fanfest isn't a business venture, it's fanfest. The people attending fanfest are gamers, people who play eve. They are also adults who want to have some fun.
But of course, the FCC has to be warned about it whenever people want to have some fun. Because the FCC is a global organization, as everyone knows.

I don't think that CCP cares about being thought "unprofessional" by saying a four letter word that society deems to be offensive. Nor should they, they are addressing their fanbase at an event that has an 18+ age limit.
The world as a whole needs to just grow up, realise that it's just a word and stop complaining about everything for the sake of it. It can't be offensive if it wasn't meant in an offensive way.
P.S. The fanfest was sponsored by Smirnoff Vodka. Keep that in mind when you compare CCP to other companies.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aint CCP privately owned company not particularly dying for investors.
Besides it was fanfest - ie you had to be 18+ to get in there so strong language is normal. This is EVE. You can encounter far worse things in there than a bit of foul language.
And yes - it is ok to put your 3 year old to mine for you in EVE. It's well within spirit of the game.

This.
I really don't get why people got this thing against swearing words. I mean its just words. ****, ass, ****. Just words. And even if we get '*' in place fo them, we all know whats relly underneath.
I like CCPs somewhat lax attitude. I think its healthy, both for the comminuty and the company. Imposing artificial attitude rules is a form of censorship, and thats never good. We are all (almsot all) mature people, so I can not for the life of me see anyything bad in swear words.
Not complicated Sidus, what you say and how you say it reflects something about you. Have I used swear words, yup. Did I figure our that I didn't need to swear to talk, yup. Everyone eventually learns this, eventually...
I seldom swear as well. I only really use the words for exteerm emphasis. :) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Accept the fact that "****" can be used in a way to express something positive.
While it is probably filtered on the forums (at least I hope so) because every douchebag would used it to tell other to **** themselves or similar... CCPs use of the word in a keynote in the sense of **** yeah this is ****ing awesome makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside! - Success=Achievements/Expectations

Sigh.
Why do people worry about language on TV and or Forum or even an event like Fanfest - that is otherwise in daily use almost everywhere?
Number of kids whos lives got ruined because they heard any 4-letter words: 0
Fresh message from reality: Kids use 4-letter words already. Always have. Probably way more than adults actually. The whole problem is that when people become parents they manage to forget how it was to be a kid and how they were constantly annoyed by all the fuss their parents made about the smallest things. --- Save the forum: Think before you post. You should read Jin Nib's comment which I was responding to :)
My first response on this thread was "Harden the **** up," which works a bit better than, "develop a spine and learn to ignore the nasty words which people will be using in the environment of an over-18's party attended by people who enjoy blowing up other people's property." :)

Im completely the opposite. I find it offensive that people will actively try to censor themselves when they really do want to say F-bombs and such. While I find it just plain stupid when rappers or whatever can say nothing BUT swearing where the communication breaks down and nothing is actually communicated. ------------------------ To make a megathron from scratch, you must first invent the eve universe. ------------------------ Life sucks and then you get podded. |

I'm so glad gangsta rap was invented in Europe and is being paid homage to by CCP as a way to assert themselves as more in touch with their European customer base.
Oh, wait ...
I think the major culture shock is that here in the US, an individual's right to not be exposed to language or imagery he might find objectionable is generally more respected than it appears to be in Europe. It's not prudery, it's respect.
Having said that, to address all of the ignorance about US culture and the general anti-American sentiment of many of the posts, as an American eve player ...

Since when is that a right? I'm pretty sure that's not anywhere in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.... Can't find it anywhere in your constitution either...
It's your right not to view it, even to protest it, but being exposed to it is your choice.

The solution, unless you can't afford proper ear plugs, would be to shove a finger into each ear and yell at the top of your lungs; "LALALALA!"
And it is my choice not to be exposed to drivel, religious or otherwise, yet that seems to be a right for any breathing crotch peasant alive to expose others to drivel. |

Oh, really? That's BS.
I find a open call for censoring to avoid hurt sensibilities infinitely more objectionable then someone saying "****", therefore according to your standards you should really STFU.
I find all sorts of republican/nationalist politicians and the crap they sprout very very objectionable, so they should STFU too.
I find puritans and all sorts of religious kooks objectionable, so they should should STFU too.
Obviously the correct thing to do is to prohibit them from speaking in public because I find them objectionable, correct?
Or does it only apply to things you personally find objectionable? The word to describe that sort of people starts with a "H".
There's no "individual right" to be shielded from things you find objectionable, provided they aren't doing it on your property, in what case you can just kick them out. You're free to choose to avoid content you find objectionable. I do that myself with 90% of TV programmes, for instance - but I really don't think they should be banned just because I find them to be utter crap and personally revolting.

Edited by: Ryoji Tanakama on 12/10/2009 12:12:51 CCP are just expressing their Norse heritage with good old-english, saxon, norse-derivative words such as the F-'bomb' (lulz). The only reason these are considered bad words is because of some jumped up out-bred distant cousins that had spent too long interbreeding with the franco-romans turned up and kicked seven shades out of them, imposing their own culture and language. The same reason we have 'pork and pig' or 'beef and cow' versus 'chicken and chicken'.
******* Normans...
But then... in the end it was Viking descendant vs Viking descendant so who won really? I mean REALLY? :|

But seriously, if we use certain words to add emphasis to our topic, there will soon be no way to emphasize anything. We'll all be so accustomed to it that language will be flat and meaningless. For those of you who need an EVE analogy to understand... : P
It's like the Titan. It's supposedly uber, but when everyone has one, it's not so special. It basically takes what was supposed to be the biggest baddie on the block and turned it into a something less special. You can try to change its purpose, but by doing so it still loses some of its umph.
So, maybe to keep this going, what's next? What can english possibly provide that provides more emphasis than the f-bomb so that when attention is required, it will be given? And, **** you all.
