Got too many WoWer dorks already in EVE, tell your friend to stay away.

If he's not switched on to Eve by those, then there's no point trying to pursuade him further.

Why point him at the 14 day trial when you can give him 21 days via the buddy program?

The same applies, if he's into dwarves, goblins etc and not bothered about ships (or humans at some point in the future) it's a waste of time. I've got friends like that.
Just show him the vids, have a few beers, see what he says. Don't prejudge. Unless you are looking for a circular argument in which case I'm done.

This. Though I would make a trial account now and get the basics out of the way so when he arrives you just pop him into a nice frigate and you guys can go roam or run some missions or whatever. Basically set up some stuff to do then if he likes it he can use that account or make his own and start from scratch.

You know, not to sound like a hopeless CCP fanboy, I really really like the butterfly effect video. It makes me CRAVE PVP when I watch it.
Goes off to running missions to afford PVP :(

It depends on how involved he is in WoW. I was at one time, a very serious WoW player who cared a lot about being excellent, spreadsheets, determining the methods by which I could maximize my performance on both a melee dps character and a "tank" character.
If he's at all this sort of thing, I imagine he'll easily be converted as Eve offers a lot more, without the sitting around in towns where midgets with pink mohawks ride around on golden motorcycles that have license plates that say "pwn" on them.
You could get into the goofyness and immaturity of WoW but insulting something someone likes doesn't usually get people anywhere. The more...grown-up game design is what got ahold of me though. I'm quite happy to be rid of it on those merrits alone.
You could also point out that EVE is very much a play at your own pace game. If you care about being good/having nice things, you work as much or as little as you want and know you're getting what you put the time in for. In WoW you can't slave away at professions or run businesses successfully, and get any returns on it... you can't pick a path.. everyone is an adventurer that kills things, directly or indirectly, and the only way to success is through a terribly designed tiered upgrade system that relies on attendance of other people during specific time frames, of specific classes who know how to play for a RANDOM CHANCE at getting something you need after several hours... after which you have to wait a full week for another shot at what you're after.
The last bit drove me absolutely insane. I was one of the better players (arguably the best of my class on my relatively small server) and it didn't do anyone any good.. I had the same weapon(s) through most of the lvl 80 content because of the way the game was designed.. I went several months without any upgrades there, whilst I put in 6-7 nights a week and performed my ass off.
TDLR version/few notes: EVE offers a few things WoW doesn't.. -play at your own pace (training skills even when you're not able to logon is a big draw here too) -pick your own profession - everyone in WoW is an "adventurer" (maybe see this pdf guide.. a bit of a stretch in some of it but a good overview of "possibilities":http://www.eveonline.com/careerguide/) -Get what you earn - no spending your days off slaving away for your raid team and getting nothing for it. -PVP in Eve stands for Player Vs Player, not Player Vs Paladin or whatever other horrible class balance jokes you want to make. PVP in EVE is highly dynamic and adaptable. You also aren't forced to PVP to get the best PVE weapons.

In wow, does he like killing lvl 5's with their level (What ever the level cap is) char's?
Do they like going around one shoting the lvl 5 npc's with their (lvl cap) char's?
Do they have a calculator on their desk?
Do they have the patience of a saint?
in WOW, do they use char planners, apps for tracking skills/powers/whatever you call them...

What you could try is attacking him at some random point on his way to school/work/therapy, if he deals with it well then he may enjoy EvE ------------------------------------------------ You either need a punch up the throat or a good shag.

Let him try EVE, but since his interest is on DUST, why not just give more info on DUST and direct him to the game he actually has interest in?

Show him a video of some fleet battle. Show a video of a lvl5 in action. Show him some videos of some lowsec pvp. Ask him if he still feels like going on a raid. If the answer is yes, do us all a favour and put him out of his misery.

WoW is popular because you can log on and start having fun immediately. EVE is not popular by comparison because you log on and play spreadsheets online or get 5-10 minutes of action for every 2-4 hours spent looking for it. The people who play WoW are more or less exactly the same as those who play EVE, don't delude yourselves to thinking 'you're better' because you play some semi-obscure MMO (however a very well developed and supported one).
If you want to get your WoW friends playing EVE, focus on Dust 514 and Incarna, because chances are those two will provide instant gratification once they are available.

c'mon.
In all seriousness, I was at one time a devout wow player, obsessed with most aspects of the game. Scroll up to see a few more well-thought out thoughts on the topic that you might actually find useful in my post above. Naturally your post is attracting a lot of haters and flamebots, but as an intelligent person who came from there... i'm able to tell you exactly what appeals to me in the EVE universe.
Anyone who thinks all WoW players (former or non) are stupid people/non-gamers/whatever need to spend a day in Eve's Rookie Help channel, and come to the realization that in both games, there are new people, old people and stupid and smart people in both games.
Eve simply sets the stage for more mature and adult like people to get more enjoyment out of the game.
Anyway, like I said, see my post above and hopefully its useful to you.

First thing. Make him or her realize there is no top dog in the game, there is no (end game),just like a fps. Its how you get them to look at eve , most people think is just another video game. and thats where they go wrong. Make him read the short stories, and if they dont enjoy them or (thats boring i just wanna pew pew) he more than likely isnt mature enough to understand the depth of eve and will just quit after a couple weeks.

Edited by: Zartanic on 10/10/2009 17:44:18 New players fall into common traps as they assume WOW is the definitive way to play a MMORPG and all other games must follow it.
So he must know:
1. Content is not thrown at you. You have to find it and a lot is player made. There are hundreds more things to do in EVE than WOW. EVE does not steer you on a clear course so its easy to get confused, lost or stuck in a rut not knowing what to do.
2. Forget levelling totally and never equate SP's to levels, they are not the same. Biggest mistake I see EVE players make and you get posts asserting they are the same almost daily. A day old character can beat a vet and they do. Skills are mainly there to give more choices. If this is not grasped they will get bored waiting for that elusive skill to train they think will allow them to beat better players. It wont.
3. EVE will not correct your mistakes (WOW does all the time to the point the game is so dumbed down its patheticly easy) If he can't learn from mistakes he will keep making them. If he is someone that blames the game for errors he will fail.
4. EVE is not about collecting gear and looking pretty.
5. CCP will not dumb down the game so unlike WOW its a waste of time asking for that. He has to learn to adapt or die.
6. 'Elitists' are accepted in EVE they are not thought of as a bad thing to be. The game is based on a very old game called 'Elite'
7. Being lazy or not bothering to learn game mechanics as well as being carried by others is not is not accepted in EVE as normal.
8. Stealing, scamming and griefing (within limits) are all accepted in EVE as CCP wants all game styles to be allowed which is important to keep the sandbox concept. If he is scammed etc that is HIS fault though as its all very easy to avoid.
9 He will start off as a total nobody and stay that way for a long time, unless he wants to go out there and make a name for himself.
10. There are no name changes or server transfers so your reputation will stay with you. You actions have consequences.

any tips?
1) Convince him to let you play on his WoW account. Your account expired, or you want to play his <insert class here>. 2) Get on his account, and make it look like you don't know what you are doing. 2) When he is not looking, trash all of his items. 3) Remove him from his guild. 4) Go around one of the main cities screaming racial remarks. 5) Open a GM Ticket and call the GM a n00b. 6) When he finds out he has been banned, tell him your comp got hacked. 7) Present him with Eve and give him 10mil ISK and a shiny new Pod.
Worked for me at least. :P (Against a friend that was bragging about his 1st Place in the Arena brackets)
