I've been flying a Rifter for about two weeks now (finished the trial account and upgraded a couple days ago). It's a great ship, and I've been able to get through the majority of the lvl 1 Epic arc missions until these last two.
Finally completed Frigate lvl 4 and moved up to Cruiser skill (finished lvl 1, started lvl 2) as the Scythe is a mining ship which doesn't do me much good atm.
Question is, which Minmatar cruiser to go for? Rupture or Stabber seem to be the two best choices.
Mostly missioning right now, meeting a few people and getting skills up...no PvP yet; like I said, only been playing about three weeks.

None, go straight for a Hurricane if you have the ISK.
If not, Rupture, it's slow and ugly, but it does the job.

If you're interested in PvE, Rupture or just go straight for a hurricane.
If PvP, thrasher, then stabber if you like it fast or rupture if you like to hurt stuff.

The artillery trasher is barely more expensive, uses small rigs (cheap) and does some insane damage for its cost. It has most advantages of a frigate and almost none of the cruiser downsides. I have no clue about missions, tho.

I'm silly enough to have tried l4s in an arty thrasher; on the whole I'd much rather have been flying a cruiser ( even a Scythe ). Bigger is generally better for PvE provided you're not on bare minimum skills anyway.
OP: never actually flown a Rupture in missions, I got a Stabber first as it was cheaper ( and faster ) and then got a Hurricane a week later, go for the 'cane if you can.

Thrasher is the next step imo. Tho be aware of its weakness towards cruisers.
After that I'd do Stabber becuase Stabber is awesome. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The thrasher is pretty much a straight upgrade from a rifter and doesn't need a huge amount of SP to be really awesome.
For PVE, though, you might be better off heading straight for cruisers. Stabber and Rupture are the two best for minmatar, with stabber being faster/lower damage and the ruppie slower/higher damage. So pick the one that you enjoy.

For PVP, Thrasher (it's a very good anti-frig platform) or just stay in the Rifter and perfect your skills.
For PVE, save up for a Hurricane.

I have a Thrasher, but couldn't do much with it when I tried using it initially. I suppose now that I have more/higher level skills it could be useful.

Rupture is the best minnie allround cruiser, it's an armor tanker though so if you've been shield tanking your rifter you'll need to get those skills up. Also; the ruppie is NOT ugly.

For PVE you will probably have the best all-around luck going Rupture for level 2s, Hurricane for level 3s, and then in December the new Phoon for level 4s \o/

when i started i used an incursus. killed stuff epically fast with blasters. afterwards i wnet for TII frigs. enyo was my pve choice and i did most lvl 2 and 3s with it. then i upgraded to various cruiser, bc, bs and TII cruiser hulls after my skills where trained appropriate.
my suggestion: train for either a rupture or the wolf/jaguar.

Ideally youll go straight for a BC. If you cant afford it get a Rupture in the mean time.
Also I think I would start with a Cyclone not a Cane for missions. Its a better tanker which is important when you have low skills.
Wherever you went - Here you are.
