ChinaÆs press and copyright authorities have banned foreign investors from operating online games ôin any formö in the country. A circular jointly released by the General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) and the National Copyright Administration Saturday said foreign businesses were banned from investment in ChinaÆs online game operations through setting up wholly owned enterprises, joint ventures and cooperatives. Foreign investors were also prohibited from joining and controlling Chinese enterprisesÆ online game operations by such indirect means as contracting relevant agreements or offering technological support. China has been steadily moving towards an isolationist policy since the rest of the world dragged them out of the stone age after WWII. Look for even tighter restrictions on all manner of things in the near future.

Serenity is a China only server with modifications required by the Chinese Government, like Nuclear Ammunition had to be changed in name due to the word 'Nuclear' being banned.

lol there was no moderation. Sometimes the first post disapears when they move it due to some bizzare forum bug.
This is what I posted taken from eve files as it still shows there.

It sounds like there's some backhanders getting passed around and a health dose of corruption. The article says it's only foreign investors banned from operating online games...presumably so that domestic companies are the only ones therefore, allowed to operate them. It's all about the money. -------------

Edited by: Jack Gilligan on 12/10/2009 12:19:40 The moral of the story is don't make a deal with the devil (communist totalitarian governments like China) because you'll get burned every time.
This also explains why countries like that always remain poor on a per capita basis. For business (and thus, prosperity) to thrive, laws have to be stable and predictable, and not written in disappearing ink.
What China is doing is essentially seizing the assets of investors, ie: online gaming has become huge, so they are taking over the businesses for themselves. And, frankly, even though CCP might get hurt here, I like to see businesses that shun US and EU workers in favor of cheap, state slave labor in places like China get burned by it.
Next time set your shop up in a place where they DONT roll their tanks over their people.

Tho I agree with the sentiment in your post, I don't think the above is strictly the case. It's not a matter of chinese businesses domesticating the labour, but the government domesticating an industry. No foreign companies can run online games in China, according to that article. So what happens to CCP, Blizzard, NCSoft, etc. and their respective games? Even foreign investment in Chinese online gaming companies is illegal. -------------

So CCP no longer gets paid by the Chinese EVE operator, does CCP still have to provide updates? Dust 514 could be a problem, though the code is probably backed up outside China. Can they get the developers visas to leave?

Nothing would happen to Dust514, except that it couldn't be operated in China. It could be developed there, just not sold there.
But if the ChiComs are serious about not allowing ANY foreign ownership or operation of any sort of online game it seems to me that CCP will have no reason to remain in Shanghai. You'd also think that EVE will also have to be shut down in China as well. Bring the Devs to Atlanta or to Iceland I guess.

Of the games currently in operation, they've stolen enough of them to go into business for themselves.
Or this is in retaliation for Unholy Rage, and other games' efforts at shutting down Gold Farmers?
Are the Goons anyway involved? This reeks of conspiracy, I tell you, just reeks!

Actually it was the Red Chinese government that outlawed gold farming. At least, they outlawed allowing it to be sold.
This feels to me like an IP grab, probably in retaliation for US and EU software companies pressuring China over software piracy, what they are telling foreign companies is that they can't access their market unless they give up all ownership or control or profit for that matter of their IP.
Like I said earlier, this is why you shouldn't do business with a government that rolls tanks over people because it will not hesitate to roll them over YOU. It might be more expensive to hire developers in the United States or Europe, but you are going to keep ownership of your IP and you won't suddenly be told you can't operate.
Way too many businesses are seduced by the potential of a market with a billion and a half people that they are frequently blinded to what they are dealing with: a totalitarian regime with no tolerance for anything it cannot control or use.

Riiiight. It's perfectly reasonable to respond to a street demonstration by driving tanks straight at the demonstrators. If some of them get crushed to paste, well, if you're Chinese then you ran them down but if you're American then they threw themselves under the treads.
Sure, OK. My mistake.

That quote sounds like it is death to EVE in China, but the article states: "No organizations or individuals could run online gaming business without permits from the GAPP". And EVE is already working closely with the Chinese authorities so I am not worried.
They seem to be cracking down on "online games operating illegally and featuring unhealthy contents. As of Thursday, more than 200 online games had been investigated and 45 overseas online games run without prior approval had been shutdown."
I am good at reading between the lines and it looks like lots of online games are probably avoiding the taxes/laws imposed on online games and the government is shutting them down because they want moar monies.

You really don't know what communism is, since China is the most capitalist contry of the world. The fact that they put red stars all over their tanks and stuff does only mean that they want to appear as defenders of poor people from the greed of the imperialism, that they are not since they are really not communists.
Your brain has been eaten by the 50s McCarthy propaganda.

Embarrassed? Turns out not. I just understand the difference between "threw themselves at" and "threw themselves under". I also understand the difference between assertions of fact, like "at least two of the demonstrators had been crushed" and colourful editorialising in a new report, like saying that they "threw themselves at the tanks". What's more, I understand the difference between stopping your sixty ton vehicle when civilians are in your path and not stopping it.
I admit I am having some trouble seeing the difference that you assert exists between crushing civilians with tanks and crushing civilians with tanks.
