The first iteration of the in-game mail is now available on Singularity.
The focus in this sprint was to expose as much functionality as possible with the intention of improving the UI later. As a result most icons are temporary placeholders and the UI layout and UX flow will see some changes.
The old and new mail systems are currently running in parallel, so the neocom mail button still leads to the old system. To access the new system you need to:
1. Open Escape menu > Shortcuts 2. Click on "ui_cmd_openmail" in Description 3. Assign shortcut and click OK
Then you can use your new shortcut to open the new mail to your heart's content.
Known issues
- UI and UX not final - Automatic broadcast of changes when receiving mail is not yet implemented. Need to close and reopen mail window to check for new mail. - Time stamp on mail replies not formatted correctly - If you receive a mail that was sent to you and a mailing list of which you are not a member, only the mailing list ID number is displayed not its name.
We're looking forward to your feedback!

I checked it out till the server went down and hasn't been up since.
It looks good and appears functional. I've yet to do much with labels since the only mail I had was from me to me.
The ability to forward, reply all, reply is nice, with the header included.
The status marker is nice too, but curious if this applies only to those in the buddy list or from any sender?
Settings ... Blocked list, CSPA charge. I did not find an interface for that yet.
More when I can play with it again.

Just tried the new email system. Very nice so far, though the icons as mentioned above need work.
More info on how mailing lists work would be nice, tho.

It looks pretty nice the only grip I have about it, and I have BR'd it is that messages sent to a mailing list before you join it do not appear and also when clicking reply to a message sent to a mailing list it sends it to only the individual and not the mailing list.
Also if it's possible to have Corp, and Alliance send a mail to the corp and alliance mailing list as well as typing in your corp and alliance name it would be greatly appreciated.

Edited by: Adunh Slavy on 15/10/2009 14:21:19 Would be helpful to have a global alias, a substitution if you will, for corp and alliance. Instead of typing the full name, "corp" or "alliance" could evaluate to corp or alliance full name of the mail composer on the backend perhaps.
I see status is not what I thought it was, nice feature.
No moderation options for new mail lists, I suppose that is coming though.
Not needed but I could see the desire of Blind Carbon Copy, BCC
When reading a new mail, the status changes from unread to read, however I have to click the mail again to get the reply, forward, reply all and trash buttons to light up.
All in all, nice mail client :)

I like it! great improvement.. but.. don't get me wrong here, I know it's like this everywhere in eve, but it struck me right away.
It really looks like the market window.
I like when you changed the fitting window to be more one of kind, so when you opened it you knew it was for something different without breaking visual style...
Maybe the mail window could have a Flare all of it's own? say... Some of that PnP stuff? Like a little map window that is set to show all friends in space? it wouldn't be readble but you could be like, oh hey! someone I know is in space! open map. ?
MOstly thought it would be some kinda of visual communcation artsy stuff.
Sorry I can't think of something better but just remember, "if it looks good, it is good"

Very nice!
I've been playing around with the mailing lists. It seems to me that their functionality is being changed pretty fundamentally.
On TQ, they serve as some kind of "bulletin board": You put up a mail, and it stays there until the mailing list owner deletes it. The same holds for alliance/corp mail, and that's how those are used.
The new mail system seems to turn them into "real" mailing lists: You send a mail to that list, and every subscriber of the list receives it. It then stays in that subscriber's inbox until the subscriber deletes it.
Is that an intended change, or is that just an artifact of the not-quite-finished UX?

but like my teacher always says, "wtf" whats that for. Simple answer, To make it stand out from the market UI. Eve doesn't have to be spreadsheets online anymore.

Thanks for the feedback so far, keep it coming!
To answer some of your questions:
-Blocked list, CSPA charges and Mailing list management are all still being worked on. We expect to have them at the end of the current sprint. -Having "corp" and "alliance" resolve to your corp/alliance is a good idea, I'll speak to CCP Karkur about getting it done. -The change in mailing list functionality that Arkady mentions is an intended one. It gives the person whose mailbox the mail is sitting in full control of what mails they keep and what mails they trash.

Thank you for the reply.
This has some quite strong effects on how mailing lists and corp/alliance mail are used right now, mainly the orientation/intro mails.
Alliance/corp mail is often used for a orientation mails of the type "hi, welcome to <corp>, here are the basic things you need to know ...". Those usually list forum addresses, possibly some shared intel channels and similar things. New people who join the corp get to see this mail right away and can follow the basic steps there.
Incidentally, one of the first rules you find in those mails is "NEVER POST TO ALLIANCE/CORP" - most pilots shouldn't post to those mailing lists. (Would be nice to be able to set them moderated while communication officers can configure them)
This is also used on some mailing lists. For example, cap ops mailing lists give some basic intros. An order tracker mailing list has a number of posts describing the current offers.
Even more "obvious" uses are difficult. The aforementioned cap ops mailing list posts a cap op in 1 week. During that week, someone finally gets his carrier and gets added to the mailing list, but he does not see the cap ship.
I have seen very few mailing lists that have not been used as "bulletin boards" like this, actually. So this change removes some widely used functionality.
Are there plans to provide a replacement for this?
Edited to add: I do not think a "mailing list" is an appropriate term for these uses, and not providing this via a "mailing list" is probably a good choice, but the functionality is important and needs to be addressed somehow.

About the mailing lists, what they are in the new client is more of a "mailing list" and would also be useful. But I think a lot of people would like a "bulletins" feature which might or might not be in mail but would function similarly to the old mailing lists. |

I've searched my corp and alliance by typing it in, and sent mails, closed the new mail UI, reopened, no mail :(. Am i missing a step or just a bug?
I wanted to test the ability to delete corp and alliance mails on the user end, or if that function only applies to subscribed mailing lists.
A lot of the new features are very nice. I do not like the fact that if you are on alliance / corp label and hit compose, it doesn't default to that. This is a functionality of the old system that should be maintained.
If this is outside the scope of 'one click to compose any message, regardless of recepitant' then perhaps a 'radio button' style like you see when making a contract. There is a 'To' line where you could type in a recipient / multiple recipients, or you could click 'To corp' or 'To Alliance' radio button, then compose your message. Perhaps some dynamic interface that adds radio selection buttons to mailing lists you subscribe to.
That's just my crazy ideas.
-- I do enjoy how it's much more like traditional e-mail in the sense that as you type in a recipient it brings up contacts / mailing lists you have.
All mails and sent mails = epic
- When you click a mail that is 'unread', and it changes over to 'read' it automatically de-selects itself. You have to re-click it to bring back the action buttons for reply/forward/delete ect.
- Mailing Lists:
Mail from a mailing lists arrives to your inbox, but does not indicate via. a label or other means what mailing list it's from. This is misleading because it lists only the character name who sent the mail in the body, vs. say 'Altair Mogwa from mailing list *****'. If you solely manage your mails from your inbox, and didn't look at the mailing lists tab as well, you would not know a group of people received the same mail.
Also when you click 'reply to all' on said mail, from a mailing list, it doesn't reply to the mailing list so everyone can receive it, it just sends to the individual. I tested this with 4 people on a list. Sent a mail, did a reply to all from a receiving party, only the original person who sent the mail to the mailing list received the reply to all. I performed this action both from the mailing list tab, as well as inbox tab.

1. My pre-existing eve-mails from the old eve-mail system aren't in the new system.
2. I composed a message from myself to my corp. The drop-down entry helped me select my corp as the recipient. I added a label, "Important Information" to the outgoing message. The message then showed up in the following places: All Mails, Sent Items, and the label "Important Information". Even though it was sent to the corporation it did not appear under Corp as expected.

Hm, are you guys going to be looking into the shortcut system anytime soon? I'd enjoy support for Directinput and the numpad numbers. Not to mention putting more functions like: deploy drones, approach, orbit, keep at range, warp, jump, dock, unlock target, look at, and showinfo in there. --- The Gate: Lol, try targeting me in a fleet fight. The Station: No U. |

That's silly, the pretext was if it wasn't going to kill the server. Linking bookmarks (like the new saved fittings) into chat windows would also be wonderful. Same with being able to send evemails with fittings linked.
On the topic of removing the old functionality of mailing lists where mail persists, and joining a corp/list lets you see all the old mails should DEFINITELY be maintained, or something to replace that function be introduced. It serves a VERY valuable function, like MOTD's in channels. |

actully maybe I'll really push it, There is so much more than could be done. Like the hidhing the right side where you read the me-mails untill you click on it. Which animates a screenless screen, (like in sci0fi) to open up and have your mail on it.

My two cents; though it is WIP, the compose buttons and all aren't overtly obvious (e.g., they don't look like buttons that I should be clicking to do stuff).

- Its been said, but i'm just /Signing it. Compose need to be MUCH more obvious. I only found it because i used to Play Mist & Riven

- The old Bullitin board style needs to die as an Evemail format, Its new storage concept of a proper user mailbox is excellent, for email equivilant. But given users clever alternative use of the bad design there will need to be a replacement. Ie forums to come with COSMOS/NewEden. This needs to be available to cover the gap ASAP. Chaos will ensure as certain info, like Teamspeak details, safe travel routes, war target lists or any static info will disappear in some mailboxes and needs forum/bulliten board like posting.
- The new meta tag style of folders is fantastic. Trash and delete are easier to handle. The underlying design was always the hang up this I know, so well done.
- Evemail Aliance/Corp buttons are sourly missed and an alias of "corp" etc would be the least that is needed. A button would be appreciated when viewing Alliance/corp but that may not make sense in the new format. Perhaps statics buttons next to compose for Alliance and corp?
^^ All of this is Constructive critique. In truth i'm VERY pleased to see this form of revamp and take my hat off to you CCP devs/designers.

Ok, now at home not work and can elaborate a bit (oh god more bullitpoints )
- Still has silly size limit. I know Evemail takes space, but with improved evemail management you wont get so much crap stored. For goodness sake it's rich text content only. Increase the limit at least, please (multi mails suck)
- 07 For VERY fast toon search, excellent use of indexing I presume
- As with every part of Eve, Keyboard UI sucks, can we have more than up down? perhaps Enter opens the group, may be a bigger problem I know
- Shame labels are associated/keyd on my toon, not associated with the mail itself. Would have been handy to see incoming mail's labels set by the sender. Too late for such a technical low level change I Guess.
- Can we have "To" as a column or an optional column for reading. Without it in the inbox I cant tell what are mailing list mails and what are direct mails, or even group mails. Same goes for Sent mail, in fact especially for sent mail
- Ok, I've not personally figured out how to send Aliance/Corpmails and made a wrong assumption from others posts. Do we just tag it with an label Aliance?! Cos if so VERY cool. I cant type the Aliance or Corp name as i suspected I would be able to. I kind of doubt this is intentional (tag system), if it is I'm amazed and pleased at the versatility of being able to upgrade any mail to an alliance mail. Very Google Wave like. I REALLY hope it isn't just a bug/"feature"
All for now. Going to report fun bug with Fleet finer UI

You are supposed to be able to type your corp/alliance name in the TO field (and should get them as an option in the drop down menu when you start typing the name in the field). Is that not working on your client?

I get that but when I send a mail to IDLE GUNS, or IDLE EMPIRE I don't see it show up anywhere Mails sent to IDLE GUNS, or IDLE EMPIRE show up in the all tab, but not in the corp/alliance tabs
okay I just made myself more confused, they all have the label sent items. so it doesn't seem to ever be received. and yes I did try closing* and reopening the mail UI.
*closing the mail window doesn't work, have to minimize and right click close on the minimized tab.
