I'm a new player (3 months) and I spend most of my time in 0.0. I like flying drakes, and I'm looking forward to Caldari recons, a Curse, Cerb, Nighthawk, etc.
However... will I have a lot more fun in the long term if I quit missiles now rather than continuing down this path? It seems like most people use guns, and the gun support skills would give me a lot more variety in the long run.
Right now I'm training towards T2 heavy missiles and level 4 support skills, but I don't want to look back and regret my choice later when I can't fly more than a half a dozen ships.
Please advise.

Similar to drone skills, you're gonna want missiles eventually if only to have the option of fitting a few to slightly increase the damage on your turret boat.
If you wanna fight in fleets yes, train Hybrids and get a Rokh
Small gangs there are good missile boats out there.
For PvE however Raven and Cruise are where it's at.

"Will I have a lot more fun in the long term if ......", the only person that can truly answer that is you. Missiles are far from a useless choice in PVP and while, yes, most people use guns there is a very obvious reason for that. 3 of the 4 races have guns as their primary weapons system. Besides, which guns are you talking about? Projecticles? Lasers? Hybrids?
I'd suggest that you get your missile support skills finished and your fitting/base skills sorted as well and *then* consider some form of turret warfare. Now, depending on what else you want to train you have a few choices. If you want to train armour skills as well as gun skills then train your hybrids and cross-train into Gallente. Alternatively you can train Projectiles and switch into Minmatar ships which have a decent set of Shield using hulls that you could climb into.
Personally, I started with Minmatar stuff and got some minor missile skills through that, then climbed into a Raven for missioning (I hated having to do that). I have since started skilling towards Gallente stuff. The drawback with doing so much cross training is that you limit yourself with how far you can go in each race.
For example, I only fly Caldari battleships and rarely use those for PVP. My core skills are all good and I can fit and fly any of the three races Cruiser hulls and down with whatever I like. This is fine with me because I am not a fan of BS combat, that kind of stationary brawling just doesn't interest me. (I can't stand super-heavyweight boxing either. Light/Middle weight ftw!)
The last note, however, is that if you are bored then by all means try something else and remember that no skills are wasted skills (except mining related ones). If you give more detail so will I.

Using last night's kill to demonstrate that missiles can be very usefull in PvP. Our inty tackled a hurricane. We all arrived on the scene at the same time. Please observe that I outdpsed almost all Vagas in a Rook.
I still have a lot to train in missile skills, missiles have issues, but properly trained are not bad as a weapon system. Better than rails anyway.

Yeah, but it looks like a missile boat right? Once I can do recons I'm not far from being able to fly a Curse.
This thread actually encouraged me quite a bit. I think I will sub-specialize in Gal ships, since T2 drones will be my next weapon system after T2 heavy missiles. Thanks guys!

I wouldn't exactly call the curse a missile boat... Yea she has some missile hardpoints but not a single missile related bonus. As for being 'not far', well, I guess that is a matter of opinion --------------------------------------------

If you plan on doing small-gang stuff, you'll find that missiles are generally fine. If you want to proper fleet stuff, you'll probably want some turret skills, or you'll find yourself getting primaried in a Scorpion a lot.

Edited by: Badmin on 15/10/2009 21:03:52 Going against fast targets? Are the Targets going to warp off even if they arent fast?
If either are true, dont use missiles. Reasons are for two reasons, explosion velocity and the time it takes for a missle to get to the target.
If you shoot a missle and it is moving faster than the explosion velocity of the missle theres little damage done.
If you shoot a missle and the target starts to warp, you do no damage by the time it getes there.
That simple.

Hard question. The answer is in what types of fleets you fly in, or will fly in. Just talking combat ships, if the fleets you will be in are mostly close range, where the HAM Drake and Torp Raven shine, then stick with missils. If you will be joining faster fleets where range is needed, then pick something else.
Missils are slow to reach their target and you will find yourself either missing kills, or getting use to the "0" damage stat on the killboard a lot when in ranged gangs. Even the best Caldari sniper uses Hybrids.
If I were you I would finish out missiles and then pick another race. Caldari ships have much to offer, but for Caldari, IMHO it's best to fly another race to provide more options for the types of fleets that come up.
