Edited by: Liang Nuren on 16/10/2009 22:45:43 So as long as I've been playing Eve, the traditional wisdom has been to have your local separate from all your other windows. I guess this comes from living in "dangerous" space all the time.
The problem with it is that its really kinda in the way no matter where I put it. Examine: http://eve-files.com/dl/208205
So on the left side, I have (long ways) my local. Drones are under it and extended slightly to the right. On the Right, I have my overview. Drones are not at the bottom, because I like having a long overview.
Along the bottom, I have cargo, alliance/corp/#idlechannels.
So... where do you keep local so that it's not in the way, but is immediately visible?

I'm afraid the only answer is 'buy a bigger screen'. I played on 1024x768 a long time, until the permanent space shortage got so agonizing I bought a 1920x1080 screen. I have never had any problems with UI space ever since.
It's the reason you can't play EVE on 800x600. -----

Hmm, I've always played windowed (for multi accounting). I'll give the higher resolutions a try (1280x960 ATM). Hopefully it won't screw anything up or lag too much.

Liang, seriously:
Dual 24" screens. 2x 1920x1200. Just go and do it, right now.
A 24" screen just seems to fit the UI perfectly. Once you've used them for a week, 1024x768 will seem like some kind of cruel joke.

I keep local where your cargo is, although not as wide Other chats where your drones are though I usually have that chat minimized Sometimes I have drones there (if I have a lot of drones, like in a Domi). Otherwise I keep the drones under the overview (I don't drag it out as much)
What are you flying though? Shield buffered Brutix?

1 You either need a bigger screen or better eyes so you can make the interface smaller.
2 There is no reason to show that many lines of local.

Considering I play at 4320x900 resolution (tri-monitor setup) my local is down the right edge of my left monitor. My overview is down the entire left edge of my right monitor (center monitor is for HUD, target, drones, and fleet only)

I never read local unless I'm in a war. ading any local in EVE is kind of like 'Barrens' chat in WoW. This 5 minutes between posts crap needs to stop, NOW.

I keep local at that size not so that I can see anything said (I frankly couldn't care less), but as an intel gathering tool. It makes it easier to see when someone jumps into the unpopulated low sec systems I live in.

I didn't realize eve would span monitors that well. Kinda throws a crimp in my multi-accounting practices though!

I have a very unique setup for my home system. I run 2 Nvidia 8800GTS 640mb cards in SLI. The SLI cards connect through the DVI to a Matrox Triplehead2go. My 3 monitors connects to the Triplehead2go.
As far as my computer is concerned, I have a single GIANT monitor with a total resolution of 4320x900. This pretty much lets me play any game at that resolution (though some work better than others depending on whether it is vert- or hor+).

Don't use local as a chat room... if you do, then just merge it with the rest of your chat boxes.
I keep mine in a tiny window above my regular chat box (same place as yours) shrunk to as small as it can be, and only expand it when necessary. It's minimized most of the time so I don't even notice it.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |

WTB local character list that looks like the items list (condensed format) like in the OPs picture. I seriously could not care less about character portraits when I'm flying in mf'ing space. Possibly wtb a hotkey to hide all chat windows.
For the OP I suggest overlapping your chat and local windows more and buying a widescreen monitor, probably 20-22" are the best bang for your buck atm.

Anybody got a decent layout for 1360 x 768? I run windowed. Monitor can handle upto 1440 x 900 but running the client windowed at that resolution interferes with my other activities (surfing pron, blogging, surfing pron, reading the news, surfing pron, yapping on yahoo messenger, surfing pron, reading the eve-o forums) so I run it at reduced client resolution because it makes it so much easier to switch between my other activities and the game.
Suggestions? Oh and please don't say "get a bigger monitor" unless you intend to buy it for me.

That is also a good thing to not get distracted by smacktalk or if you get asked for ransom. So i do not have to worry about stuff like that and just shoot other ships. I do not read local, except when i read it.
I forgot to add, i have the optionbar (the vertical bar, do not know the name) on the right side instead of left so my local does not overlap most of it.

I keep it separate but minimized when in high sec and not fighting and opened behind the corp chat (in it's default position) with only the member list peaking out when in low-sec.
Works well, you don't really need to see what's being said all the time, just who's in system with you.

I hide about 80% of my local window. Example : http://i33.tinypic.com/20pt0ra.jpg
All I need is the local name list. I don't chat in local, I don't converse in local, and I certainly can't see the number in local change out of the corner of my eye any easier than seeing the scroll-bar change in size. ---------

1280x1024 19 inch screen... I haven't really got problems with anything. I keep my drones, selection and overview on the entire right, moved the ship modules to the right too, down I keep the local and other channels, on the left scanner, cargohold (if doing pve) and if I need market I have it right in the middle, but as far as I'm concerned, I've got a lot of space... Always.

This, quite frankly. I run two full screen clients at 1920x1080, and there is more than enough screen space estate to play around with.

Edited by: Marko Riva on 17/10/2009 09:24:22 I use an odd windowed resolution (1600x1000) so I can cascade several clients onto my screen without losing too much UI space. My watch list window is bottom right, drones are just off from the middle on the top and broadcast/scan windows are only open when actually needed.
Local is to the left as with most people and I moved my target windows to the bottom so they're close to my modules window, making for fast clicking (I use a combination of mouseclicking, G15 keys and Fuctions keys).
