Generally, those who consider themselves pirates have an expectation to fund themselves primarily from their PVP. That means ransoms, since it's considerably more profitable than wrecks. Beyond that, playstyles vary largely by individual disposition.
I can't speak for many, but at The Bastards' we're generally more than happy if we can get even odds and love getting real fights. Carebears are nice income, but not as much fun. It seems to me the people who complain that pirates aren't interested in 'real' pvp are the same ones who come tromping about lowsec in 30man RR bs gangs and wonder why no on engages them or falls for their fail traps. They just don't 'get' it.

Agree.
All those 'elite' pvpers can't differentiate cowardice from playing economically by not engaging in fights you can't win. I love good slug fests but in most cases I prefer to bring my fleets home in one piece if losses > profit.
