Currently I'm using a Destroyer to do my salvaging, but I always end up needed to do 3-4 runs to finish it up for most level 4 missions.
Is there a better way? The only other alternative ship (Gallente) that I've seen that can compete is an Exqueror, but they only have 4 high slots versus the 8 on a Catalyst.
What do you use? How do you salvage level 4s?

Hurricane with all its low slots can be filled with Expanded Cargohold IIs and have a capacity to over 2000m3. You fill the mids with cap rechargers and a 100mn AB or fit an MWD also if you're salvaging after you turn the mission in.
Also, you can jetcan your salvage, use one tractor beam to haul it around, and then come back once with an industrial to pick it all up. One jetcan per room if you've got multiples.

Orca to tractor in the wrecks. Hurricane to salvage the wrecks.

Edited by: Sorela on 19/10/2009 14:48:27 I use a destroyer as well. I find if I just toss worthless heavy stuff that at worst I have to do 1 extra trip to pick up stuff I left in a can. If you really want to pick up everything then you can go for a Hurricane/Harbinger.
If you're super rich of course the very best option is a T3 cruiser.

I leave cap boosters and scrapmetal behind--they take a ton of cargo capacity for minimal return.
In my Corm, I can usually get it done in one trip per room...depending on the number of missile launchers recovered.

Edited by: Kedhar on 19/10/2009 15:44:33 The best Gallente salvaging ship is a Kronos. It may be expensive but as late as you do 3-4 missions per hour you will want it. You get nearly 7000m¦ so you can salvage 2-6 missions in one run. With 40km double speed tractor beams you can halve your salvage time compared to a salvage cane.

I find it's one to two trips for my Catalyst, but maybe that depends on who you're fighting (in Matari space it's a lot of Angel Cartel).
In 0.0 I find the Exequeror to be fantastic. I put a huge plate on it, two tractors and two salvagers and off I go. There are those who laugh at it but the only one I ever lost was through being killed by rats when I fell asleep at the keyboard (so, my own damned fault).

Question, If you bookmark the wrecks (one in each room) can you come back in salvage 'cane' even if you couldn't use it in the mission due to low mass gates?

After you turn in the mission, and everyone leaves the mission space, the deadspace and gates goes away, leaving only the wrecks and cans behind.
So you can warp straight to each room (considering you bookmarked a wreck in each room) and don't have to worry about gates limiting you.

Another question along the lines of salvaging:
Is there a formula for what your chance of success is to salvage a wreck?

Another option, now that there are small rigs and they don't cost too much, is to fit your destroyer with cargohold optimization rigs. Really boosts the hold nicely.

Salvaging skill, 5% chance per level = 25% at Lvl 5 Salvager I, 5% Salvager II, 7% Small Salvage Tackle I, 10% Small Salvage Tackle II, 15%
I'm probably wrong about this, but I would expect it to work the same as resistance hardeners do. That is, out of 100, salvage skill at Lvl 5 would give you a 25% chance to salvage (or 75 not to). The salvager I would take 5% off of the 75, and so on.
If that's how it works, then it would be:
Salvage Lvl 5 + Salvager II + Small Salvage Tackle I x 3 = ~ 49.2% chance of salvaging the wreck.
Otherwise, if it's a simple stack it would be:
25% + 7% + 30% = 62% or so.
You don't need all of that, though it will make things go faster. I just put two salvagers on each wreck. If one of them doesn't salvage it, the other usually does.
Note: This doesn't affect at all the salvage you get out of the wreck. That is pre-determined for each wreck.

base chance is additive (level + salvager base) + (summed tackles). so, T2 salvager + 2+ T1 tackle = (5+7) + (2+10) = 55%
after that, there is modifier depending on wreck. some are easier, other are harder. some wrecks require minimum level of Salvaging.

From those of us on the other side of the aisle, I've found the Stabber to be a beast for salvaging. Unlike all these silly dessys I see flying around, a properly kitted Stabber will give most NS frigates a good run for their money. Dessys just go too slow when you're up against the clock.

cataclysm
high : 4 tractor / 4 salvager
med : AB 1mn / cap recharger
low : expanded cargohold x 3
rig : 2 cargo / 1 salvage
In my cargo i use 2 secure container, 1 med 1 big ( one with ~~350 m3 and one with 780 m3), like that i have something like 1300 m3.
1300m3 is enough for 90% of the missions, for some one like damsel, AE i need 2 travels.
On my CNR i also have a tractor and i loot some bs wreck if they are in range while fighting to save some cargo.
For info i only salvage/loot 20-30% of the time, lot of mission are a waste of time to salvage/loot.

Hurricane is the win and it doesn't take long to train for either. I just ran an evemon plan on a fresh char with no spaceship or learning skills and it was just over 5 days. If you already have learning and BC trained, I'm sure you can get in one in less than 3 days.

Also using a Catalyst for salvaging lvl 4 missions. Usually can clean up with one run (leaving some Cap Boosters and metal scraps behind).

Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II Expanded Cargohold II
Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters Cap Recharger II
Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Small Tractor Beam I Salvager II Salvager II Salvager II Salvager II
Cargohold Optimization I Cargohold Optimization I Cargohold Optimization I
Hobgoblin II x1
This setup gives me 1261 m3 cargohold, 447 m/s speed and is cap stable for around a minute, but I have never gone dry on cap.
Just another idea...

Well I have Salvaging 5, Salvaging Implant, Salvager II's and 3 medium salvage tackle I's and I have a 70%. Every Plan lasts until the first shot is fired. "I have a Plan, a good one." Generally means it is not. If Yellow it get a Fellow Killed |

I use a Golem with 7x Tractors, and Cargo Expanders to loot. I bookmark a central can in each room, and rarely have to move once the Golem comes in. My alt follows the Golem around in a Catalyst with 8 Salvagers & Salvage rigs fitted.
As one tractors, the alt targets the wreck and salvages them all. The Golem then scoops the jetcan contents into it's huge hold.
It can salvage any L4s without coming back for a hauler, and clears even the biggest missions in next to no time. |

Edited by: Wet Ferret on 20/10/2009 12:27:45 I've been using a Hurricane for awhile but I still swear by the cormorant as being one of the best salvagers. 4 tractors / 4 salvager (or 5 tractor 3 salvager with high salvage skill + rigs), MWD, cap battery, 2 cap recharger and an expanded cargohold. Gets 1200 m/s and cap stable with most highs running and can zip around the field with ease.
The main tradeoff is lack of cargo space, but it's so quick you can save up a few missions and salvage through them all in no time, collect big stuff in a can and then bring back your hauler to scoop it all up (I use a prowler).
Hurricane is great if you're lazy though. My only complaint is that if I have more loot than it can carry then using it at all was a big waste of time since I need to save loot and make another trip anyway.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. |

his: 4x salvs, 4x tracts, meds: 3x caps, 1x MWD low: 6x cargos rigs: 3x tackles
1500+ cargo, no cap problem, fast enough with MWD. If cargo is full, just drop the cap boosters 800! :)

Kronos looks like the way to go but that's a bit far for me to train. The 40km tractor beams is win.
Hurricane looks perfect though for right now. 2 days for me to train up. Thanks for the tip!

I know of a great corporation that specializes in salvaging.
The fee is minimal as they do one heck of a job clearing your mission of loot and salvage.
Send me an in game mail for more details.
