Borderlands has been getting a fair amount of press coverage. The FPS elements are only vaguely interesting to me, but the RPG dimension with co-op sounds rather promising.
It sounds like a cross between Diablo & Fallout 3...only with a better FPS experience which actually sounds rather good.
What are your thoughts?

I'm just going by what is told on the steam page, but it sound more like a normal FPS game with a stats screen, than a game with an actual RPG dimension. If there are any real RPG elements, they certainly aren't adverticing them.

There's some decent names behind it and at least they're trying to be different somewhat, never heard of it but going to keep an eye on it.

Metacritic reviews are startling to trickle in.
Pretty good start if I do say.
There's a compilation of reviews on this steam forum post if anyone's interested.

*cough* Already have a lvl 15 Siren on the 360, and have completed what *I believe* is the last plot mission of the starting zone. Though I haven't seen it in HD, it looks good even at standard def, the cell shaded GFX are an interesting aesthetic. There are many comedy things and most of them quite quirky...not the most original jokes but still funny enough to elicit laughter. It's a cool world, kinda Fallout 3-esque and the gameplay is very good.
Each character has a unique ability as well as a 'skill tree' (taken wholesale out of World of Warcraft) and gains 1 skill point/lvl from 5-50. The Hunter has a pet which will attack his enemy and has skills for sniper rifles and pistols. The brick s**thouse, whose name is actually Brick, is a melee fighter and/or tank who can 'berserk' gaining several related bonuses. The soldier is standard assault rifle/shotgun fare but can summon a stationary turret to help. The siren can turn invisible for about 8 seconds, so enemies can't hit her...at later levels she can pull off stealth kills too. Killing enemies with a particular weapon type increases skill with that type (eg. pistols, SMGs, sniper, etc) which gives permanent bonuses to that type at intervals.
Gameplay-wise...I don't see how it's particularly different from Morrowind/Oblivion/Fallout 3, as an RPG from the first-person. The gun combat is fun and challenging, particularly for the siren I'm assuming, and you have an inventory, up to 4 equipped guns (slots unlock as you progress, I have 3 so far), a shield, optional grenade mod and an artifact. The gazillions of guns advertised is a bit of a sham, it's just that loot is randomly generated and so can have differing values of various stats (reload time, scope zoom, crit bonus, dmg bonus, clip size bonus, fire rate).
The co-op part...no experience yet but I imagine it would be brilliant. All the fun parts of, f.ex, L4D but with the extra RPG elements. The classes are quite distinctive and complimentary. With the siren flitting in and out of melee/gun range, I've imagined tough fights being easier and more fun if I'd had sniper support or simply bullet cover. Vehicles too support 2 players at once (one driving (very tough!) and one gunner).
Complaints...the inventory is a little stingy as a newbie (it can be increased 3.5 fold eventually), the car is difficult to drive, particularly on rocky terrain (where snagging a pebble stops you completely), weapon recoil is a pain and the graphic of gunfire makes it hard to see what you're actually shooting, let alone where (most baddies seem to have a soft spot where bullets crit when they land).
Also, the ability to sneak would've been great, the level design was practically calling for it. As it is, enemies simply have a line-of-sight, a range and friends who are alerted when they are. They also respawn which is odd...as an example, I cleared out a bandit base, including boss, but on the way out some had reappeared...HOW??? Were they out buying groceries in a post-apocalyptic wasteland?? AI isn't particularly bright, but trying to FPS with a joypad, that is a good thing. Enemies don't scale at least, which is a good thing, but on the flip side, it suffers arbitrary 'you can't hit because he's high level' syndrome. It's silly...higher lvl enemy should hit harder yes, have more health and clout, not be invincible just because my bullets are two levels too low.
Didn't realise I had so many gripes, but don't mistake me, they're forgivable. The rest of the game is good enough that you'll keep playing despite small grievances. It seems to be aiming for a very unique, as yet unfilled, niche in the games market. FPS, MMORPG style baddies and char progression, L4D style co-op, random loot, frenetic action and quirky humour in a wasteland. Now I just have to hope any of my XBL friends get it too. Will prob buy steam version as well though, just for the keyboard/mouse/mod-ability. -------------

Probably, maybe, sorta, I think so. Something about a vault that sounded very STALKER-like. I don't think it particularly matters, it's not a story or morality/choice driven game. It's more about the guns, loot, character builds and co-op play in a nicely crafted environment. With ability cooldown period, choice of gun and your personal skill choices, as well as different baddies and maps, battles can play out quite differently. They provide a playground, like L4D, but with the (MMO?)RPG additions and a string to (loosely) follow so you're in the right zone for your lvl -------------

Im mostly worried about the AI. It seems pretty average at best, something i cant stand in games nowadays... theres just no excuse anymore. Especially considering its a basic run n gun. How hard is it to program flanking, cover and charging?
Anyway, apperently as the enemy get harder they get smarter .. i hope so, because thats what getting my money will be based on. Im going to wait a little while and see what people say.

The AI isn't great, but it's above average I'd say. While enemies aren't coordinated enough to try and flank or actively use cover, they do run from grenades (hence my favourite grenade mod is the "explode immediately" variety! Run away from that, bi**h!), try to flee when they near death and maintain range appropriate to their weapons (melee tries to get close, ranged try to keep a distance). Beyond that however, they just come at you with whatever attack pattern they have. Bizarrely, in outdoor areas, they will pursue you to the ends of the planet and beyond if they even catch a glimpse of you. Indoors however they don't venture much further than their predesignated areas.
Put simply, they won't stand completely still while you fill them with hot lead. But getting chased by a horde of "Mutant Midget Psycho" (that is honestly what they're called) never gets old. They make me smile every time they attack, I won't spoil that for ya. -------------

So it is a FPS version of diablo. There is a lolplot and hack&slash RP(read: you can make builds, but there is no RP), but the focus is getting more stats, better gear and e-peening your friends with your build. Repeat ad infinitum.

I'm really sad now...was enjoying this game earlier this evening, almost lvl 20 now and just into new zone. Stopped for dinner & Dexter, went to turn the 360 back on and had an E74 system failure Now I'll have to shell out another ú200 for another Elite, but hopefully I can just use my old hard drive so no data loss.
Borderlands and soon Forza 3 can justify it -------------

It's almost 2+ years old i think, so probably long expired. I'm at a loss as to what to play right now with it out of action. I've literally a moment ago placed an order for a new one with next day delivery but I think that means Friday now It's like when your ISP is having trouble and your Net goes down...you don't realise how much you miss something till it's gone
There is a fix online for the fault, but it involves heat guns and reattaching the GPU heatsink with new thermal compound. Visa is just easier. -------------

E74 is covered by the extended 3 year warranty for the red ring of death issue, as per xbox.com so get on that freebie fix.

Just bought it. Unfortunatelly.
Unfortunatelly the online registration server won't be up 'till october 30th for anyone but USA / Canada (which will be up 26th). Game can not be installed. No mention of it on the site or in the store. Sucks.
Guess i'll just give it back on monday and buy modern warfare 2 or something.

BORDERLANDS is effing amazing.
Hands down the best game i've purchased all year. (I bought it to play on my 360, console release was on the 20th I think it was?)
Everything about it is just plain pure fun. Solo or with friends, i've enjoyed it both ways. Everything is beautiful in the art department, the action and characters and production are all fun and fantastic and with all the gear and stats and stuff, it keeps some of us mmo/rpg/min-max nuts happy too.
I STRONGLY recommend it. You pretty much can't go wrong with it. It was cheap too - most console games were like 70 bucks on launch (here in Canada), this came out at 40.

L4D is to Borderlands as Solitaire is to Eve.
Seriously, L4D was as close to shooter-on-rails as you could get without being a shooter on rails. Borderlands is a rich open experience.

I merely intended to illustrate the wonders of a well-polished, fun, elaborate game vs something of a shallow, unrewarding experience. Borderlands is good :)

Nah. Pre-purchased L4D2 and Dragon Age instead over Steam as I just don't see Borderlands having any real long term potential and value.

Every character looks like a cardboard cutout on the background. Didn't catch my interest, no matter how many 'press' people they give advance copies to in return for good reviews.
That's how it works, btw, you stop getting advance copies if you trash the games, so you better be nice.

...but you bought L4D2? it has long term potential and value over a huge open ended FPS-RPG?
Unless you detest anything RPGish (which I doubt is the case completely, you're in EVE), I *guarentee* it's more rewarding than L4D which is almost a shooter on rails. Borderlands is some of the most fun i've had in ages. And I am not the kind of person to be happy just playing any old game. I'm very critical of everything I pick up. It's in my top 3 at least for the year and after trying dozens of games in the past handful of months, I finally found something actually worth the time and money.

I hadn't seen or read any reviews before purchase and I assure you it's fantastic. There were no "advance reviews" though.. the console release date was this past week and I looked high and low for any sign of a proper review, and none were posted until after I had the game in my hands.
To each their own and all that, but the "cardboard cutout on the background".. you do know it's supposed to look like that somewhat right? In action it looks fantastic. Especially the environments.

it just fresh from all the current brown generic shooters out there.

p.s you guys arn't friends.
i just like it since it is taking FPS to a new area of bright hilarity with a good story and my god tones of weapons. Where not just talking like 20-30 were talking like 2-3 k or even more.
