So I had a friend ask me, exactly why is a covert ops cloak II any more useful than the other cloaks? And I found I couldn't really give him an answer. Yes, of course the covops II allows you to warp cloaked, but *why* is that important? What specific situations will this ability save me from? When is it useful? I've been scouring the internet for an answer to this question with no luck. Perhaps a veteran will enlighten me?

Edited by: Mutnin on 22/10/2009 16:18:29 On certain ships you can warp while cloaked using one. The ships have to be bonused for that though as not just any ship can do it. Off the top of my head, I think only Stealth Bombers, Transport ships and the Force recon ships can do it.
It also requires less time after un-cloaking for targeting lock on all ships.

Yes I'm certainly aware that you can warp cloaked if your ship can fit the covops II, and I didn't mention it but I also know it decreases targeting cooldown after decloaking. However, since 90% of ships that can fit the covops are creampuffs in combat (except some of the new tech3, <3) I don't see the lock bonus as particularly useful in the great majority of cases. I suppose my question could be narrowed to: Why is it worthwhile to be able to warp cloaked? What does this buy me, other than convenience? When will it help me, or save me?

The COCD is useful for scouting, running and surprising.
The ability to warp cloaked means that you can move about a system undetected, for scouting this a valuable in that your scout is placed at less risk, and the thing you are scouting is less likely to know that they are being scouted.
For running it might be best to use an example. You jump into a camp in your cocd fit helios. You can hit warp and immediately cloak yourself, reducing your chances of being caught.
It is also handy for surprising targets. Lets say you are hanging out in a system and some guy starts ratting there. You get it in your head that you would like to liberate him of his ship. The cocd allows you go to his location and engage him with almost no warning on his end.
A bit short, but hope that helps

You are able to warp onto a grid without being seen. Without the cov ops cloak, you wanrp in completely visible, come to a stop, and then cloak. People will just move towards you, decloak, and kill you.
They will also know what ship you are in because you appear on the directional scanner while warping. Doesn't happen with cov ops, they never see you till you want them to.
You also need to decloak to warp out, same issues.

Covops cloak also lets you move at your standard subwarp speed (without your AB/MWD). This lets you fly out to make safes, or get warp-ins on campers who are standing still, or stay clear of someone coming out to decloak you, or even follow slower ships around.

I personally like parking it next to my target and allowing my fleet to use me as a warp in point for a nice gank in a safespot lol

Thanks for the answers, all. It seems the advantages are subtle, and sometimes situational, but very useful then.

Warping cloaked is huge and leads to all kinds of evasive manuever, and opens up a lot of tactical oppurtunities.

It's useful - for instance - when you warp to a camped gate...
- You can warp in at distance without decloaking. Then you are able to move with normal ship speed to the gate while avoiding opponents ships. - When you warp at zero and fall out of warp because of a bubble you are still cloaked (if no object is in your way which decloaks you!). Now see point 1 ^^
One application: ninja ratting in hostile null sec in a force recon which can to some damage (Pilgrim) or any stealth bomber.

Here are the ships you can use:
CovOps Frigate - for probing and sneaking up on people and then getting your gang to warp to you to kill the target. Drop your probes, cloak up and move around unseen.
Stealth Bomber - for sneaking up on people, dropping bombs and torpedoes and then leaving before they can attack you (or just cloaking and moving away so they don't know you're there). Having them thnk you've warped when you haven't is sometimes just as good.
Force Recons - for sneaking in on people, applying large amounts of EWAR joy on them and preventing them from attacking, then getting your gang to kill them - the Falcon is probably the best known of these.
Blockade Runners - for sneaking reasonably large amounts (up to 10k m3) past people and gate camps.
The main advantage over the other cloaks is that you can leave grid easily without having to drop cloak. Any other ship needs to drop cloak and becomes vulnerable during the time until they enter warp.
Take a look at Eve-Tribune.com - I wrote some articles there last year on Covert Operations....they're a little out of date with the probing changes, but still quite relevant.

Cov ops cloak II = Scouting for pwnage.
with the cloak it makes scouting a heck of alot easier and a heck of lot less dangerous.

1) No need to decloak and get back up to speed before warping off 2) Enemies don't know when you warp off 3) Enemies don't know WHERE you warped off to (IMPORTANT!!!)
---------- There is always a choice. The choice might not be easy, nor simple, nor the options be what you desire - but, nevertheless, the choice is there to be made. |

Sitting in a pilgrim - force recon - you can engage a target at will without detection. You approach the target cloaked, when you get in range you decloak, neut, track disrupt and let lose the drones.

You can easily use it in a Helios and get a warp in point on an unsuspecting victim. You can warp in at range to a POS to give targets to your sniper fleet that is out of range to call targets.
Really warping cloaked is awesome, and makes it easy to get into engagements with people who don't want to engage you. It also allows you to get positions around a POS you want to take down. On top of that, it has the added benefit of giving your Covert Ops ship Interceptor speed while warping, which makes scouting all the easier. (13.5 AU/S warp while cloaked vs. 6AU/S while uncloaked.)

Any gate camp with a dictor and a frigate dragging drones behind himself is really going to ruin your day.

Edited by: George Mccloud on 23/10/2009 21:29:59 Having used Cov Ops cloaks quite intensively myself for a few weeks I can say that they're a great asset for any ship that can use them. I'll name a few advantages some of which have already been named though.
1. Normal sub-warp speed allows you to move quickly which avoids the chance of being bumped out of a cloak or decreases the time you need to get into position for whatever it is you need doing (warp-ins, bombing runs, general scouting)
2. Enemies don't see when you warp or where you warp to. They will not be able to follow you easily.
3. In high-sec wars and low-sec a cloak can make you nearly invulnerable to a gate camp. I underlined nearly because if you have a bad latency and a sensor boosted interceptor then you can still get caught. A normal cloak forces you to decloak and get back up to speed before warping.

While this is possible, you'd be surprised at how bad a lot of people are at this and it's not that hard to evade most of them. ______________________ Isn't it time you learned to fight back? Agony Unleashed Home of the PvP University.
