Is Server population going up or down, over the last year. Just curious if the game is growing by players or shrinking.
What is the highest population that's been in Eve?
Thanks :)

Edited by: Riedle on 22/10/2009 16:37:45 I think the record was 55k signed in at once.
When you say population though, there are two main measures. Number of accounts and number of people signed in.
since I have been playing the sign in amounts have steadily been going up (with some allowance for summer holidays).
CCP would know how many accounts are subscribed.

Edited by: Billy Sastard on 22/10/2009 16:43:57 EVE has been growing steadily with no signs of decline since I started playing 4 years ago. We are continually hitting new concurrent user records and there is no sign of things slowing down. Contrary to what some say, EVE is by no means a dying game. Last I heard, CCP was quoting over 300,000 subscribers and that was a while back. <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

That was my only concern, since Eve is such a long-term based game, I didn't want to invest a lot of time into it, if the populations were steadily declining.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've had an Everquest account for ten years. Yes, they only have about 120,000 subscribers now (down from half a million), but folks are still having fun there. There is still the occasional true newbie that shows up as well.
EVE will be around for many years to come.

The Quarterly Economic Newsletter for Q2 of 2009 for example has info on population growth.

CCP is looking forward to 320k when the subscriber base exceeds the population of Iceland.
IIRC, there were a some comments that the Apocrypha Expansion seems to have been a bit bigger boost than typical expansions.

The thing with the last expansion was that you could buy it in stores rather than just downloading it.
You get a lot of people who walk into a computer store and go over to the games section looking for a new game who wouldn't even think about downloading something off the internet. Not having a box in their hands with a CD in it - is an unfamiliar feeling to them.
The thing with EVE is that the Developers have slowly but steadily improved the game over the years whereas other games (Planetside ...) have simply been milked for what they were worth and left to die on the vine after several failed expansions in a row. Soooo ... some of the people who used to be over there - are over here now ... typing on this forum ... and they've dropped from a high of 5 servers to 1.
Now ... the nature of CCP and it's ownership of the game may have a lot to do with that. However ... the advent of Dust514 may bode ... something else ... for the future. We just don't know now. Could it split the user base? Could it bring more people in? Could the development of EVE suffer as attention is shifted to Dust or could Dust die a poor step child to EVE?
*shrug*
Time will tell.

The number of subscribers has been steadily increasing. Unlike other games the content does not get redundant every few months so CCP do not have to run to stand still. This saves a considerable amount of wasted development costs and also means all new content expands the game permanently. Games like WOW have to continually feed new content which is very wasteful but important for their game model to work. It also means that at some stage the game will have to stop. EVE does not have that issue.
EVE came from an Indie style background so there are no major investors to pay off and no external pressure to meet targets. This means CCP do not have to compromise on game play which tends to keep players loyal to the game.
So EVE is possible the only MMORPG that has longevity automatically built in.

From my experience, I'd say increasing. Although, it's not a net-increase visually.
What do I mean? I see the online numbers being higher, and in some systems you are seeing more people cluster up. But in others, there is a decline in the daily amount of players that go through. That only shows that people are changing areas they like to be in, though, not that there is less players.
But by the numbers, the average amount online is over 20,000 people. It booms into the 40,000+ range throughout the day, and on some days it lowers as much as 18,000. But unless it is directly after downtime, or if the server crashed, don't expect to see the number under 12,000 online at once. And that is still HUGE compared on a single server on any online game. (Sure, eve is huge, but that means you are more likely to find different people and not run into the same 100 guys over and over again.)
So yeah, Eve is going :) ______________________________________

When I started playing in 2004, peak server population was about 8000-8500 every day, and a more average population was 4-5k.
So it's gone up a lot over time, which is why when you see a chicken little on the forums say "eve is dying" you can basically ignore them.

I'm trying not to echo previous posts but it can't be helped. Out of all the games that have entered the extremely saturated and overcrowded MMO market, EVE is the only game that has grown in a very steady fashion.
World of Warcraft has 15 million subscribers you say? It's not steady growth. As someone mentioned it relies on bursts of content to keep itself going. Therefore as content becomes old, subscriptions drop, expansion comes along, the numbers soar before tapering again.
The key point here is that EVE has NOT hit it's peak.

I think this is because CCP built EVE with a long term approach. The skill system itself attracts people that are looking for a long term gaming investment I think, so the people who get EVE tend to be the kind of person that hangs around for a while. <-------------------------------------------------> "Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former." -Albert Einstein |

Indeed: for new people who don't know, it is impossible to have trained everything at this point. Even if you joined right away when Eve launched, and lost no training time, using an optimized training path, you would still have skills to train. Also, the constant new content additions via expansions helps keep Eve fresh and new, while providing constant graphics updates, so it always looks new and shiny. And considering Eve only just actually put boxes on store shelves, and will have the Dust 315 tie-ins, I imagine its got quite some time to go.

Sorry, but I do believe Tripoli would beg to differ. I think what you are thinking of is getting them all trained to 5, which is a beast of a different color. --------------------------------------------

Ah, yes, that's what I meant. Tripoli has indeed trained all skills to at least level 2 at this point. Which is pretty awesome. However, there's no way for anyone to be unable to train anything whatsoever. Every character no matter how old still has room to improve and grow. Which is pretty cool. Should also encourage newbies a tad - even the vets haven't "finished" training.

Overall, server population is going up.
It dips in the summer and rises in the winter.
For the first year or two, EVE had no more than 5-K on at once, probably less.
When I joined about two years ago, EVE had about 20K on.
Now, average is >40K. Record is 53K or so.
