Well in their wisdom, Infinity Ward have decided NOT to allow dedicated servers for the next instalment of CoD.
Info can be found here.
The petition can be found here.
I personally have stopped my pre-order and will not be buying the game, unless this situation changes. I know of many others that feel the same way.
This link is a search, for boycott servers already in place.

I have no problem with this. I understand why people want Infinity Ward to supply the dedicated servers, but that really does not need to be there job. The majority of FPS I play don't have hosted servers by the game company and it works out fine. So many clans, small gaming groups, and individuals that host servers themselves, or just someone running a match on there PC. These options usually work out just fine. Infinity Ward is in the business of developing games, that's it. I have always felt that a subscription would be a good compromise however. If you want to use top of the line servers, why not pay a subscription.
Its not cheap to run full time hosted servers, and as many many people have high speed internet these days, hosting matches on home PC's is often not a problem in my experience.
When you first started playing EVE Online you paid for the game, it did include the first month of playtime, but you still payed for it. I see no reason FPS Games cant have a similar setup as MMO's. You pay for the game, and if you want hosted servers, you pay a small fee every month. If you don't pay the fee, then you can only use servers that private individuals host. This really would be the best compromise in my opinion.

You'll have to play via their system IWNet, which decides where and with whom you play, according to their set of rules.
This means no modding, as well as many other advantages that come with dedicated servers.

Would have taken about the same amount of time as it did for you to construct your post and then post it to check the first 5 pages of OOPE.
But since its for a worthy cause i won't rage on you. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

You're right, although it was mostly a copy and past thing, as I was talking about this on another forum. Came here, did a quick scan and posted.
Kinda had my angry head on.
I apologise.

Err, i dont think you get how things work buddy. IWnet is going to be MORE expensive to run for IW, and people dont want it to start with. Secondly, IW doesnt Host dedicated servers. They simply build the function into the Engine and OTHERS RUN THE DEDI SERVERS. Now, there is no option. Its their system or no-ones.
Ironcially, at the time IW are removing dedicated servers from pc. The folks behind Bad company 2 are BRINGING DEDICATED SERVERS TO THE CONSOLES. Will be very interesting to see who comes out on top.. though fanboys never cease to their rampant stupidity.

Edited by: Armoured C on 26/10/2009 01:44:18 congratualtions , you wont stop this from happening. This is going to be one of the biggest selling games of the year topping GTA IV sales record easily. A few thousands signatures wont stop progress of this game as they and i know you will end up buying it soon as peer pressure will break since everyone you know will be playing it and so will break your spirit.
although your petition is a avid cause you wont get anything changed.
im not a big fan of MF2 but the fact that the only thing my entire psn and pc buddy list will be playing is this game so i might as well get it if i fancy playing with someone from civilisation.

Tbh, the whole train of thought they are taking with "But if the game has a longer shelf life new games will not sell" is, to be frank, bull****. If you are worried about developing a new game and people not buying it because an older version of the Franchise is a "threat" to its success, you need to seriously re-evaluate your game design philosophy and maybe realise its time for a new Franchise instead of beating the last few ú's or $'s out of it.
If a new game is good, people will buy it despite the fact its predecessors are still successful or not. Unreal Tournament was brilliant (Even though unreal 2007 was a disaster, to be honest) christ, i still have unreal tournament 99, and 2004.
Not providing the tools to prolongue a games lifespan is counter productive. Nobody wants a game that may become obsolete without having any say in the matter just because the developers have decided its time you give them another $30. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

31k petitioners in an earlier eve thread on this subject and the group of people who spawned this Genre have every right to be ****ed. I've never played CoD this decision will not make me likely to start. TF2 still blows their faces off.
I dont have money to waste i dont know about anyone else but: Quote: 'This means no one can set up a server, you have to play via IWNet, which decides where and with whom you play.'
This makes me far more likely to NOT pay for a game than pay for one.
