Hey! I'm at a crossroads at the moment, can't decide what race to choose. I'm mainly doing gate camping but will probably be fighting in 0.0 pretty soon.
I'm interested in caldari, with drake as the first ship and Onyx when i get higher skills (and perhaps eventually the rook or raven).
Is the onyx any good? And is caldari a good race for a pirate to choose. Does missiles actually suck for pvp, or do they only suck in big fleets?
What viable pvp (low sec pirate) ships does caldari have? And are they out-classed by other races when it comes to pirating?
Otherwise i might be going minmatar or amarr. Amarr seems to be the most common choice.
I have most of my skills in minmatar/caldari at the moment but tbh amarr seems to be the best way for a pirate to go.
I'd appreciate some helpful answers others than "just choose what you think is most fun".
Cheers

The Onyx is alright. For lowsec gatecamping, the armour-tanking HICs are often prefered as they can fit sensor boosters and extra tackle more easily. But remote sensor boosters help with this.
Missiles are good in small scale engagements. They are less good in larger fights where targets pop before your DPS arrives, but that doesn't occur in small fights.
Good Caldari lowsec ships: Merlin, Caracal, Blackbird Drake, Raven, Scorpion, Rokh, Rook, Falcon, Cerberus. For solo, you can go Merlin, AML Caracal, HM/HAM Drake, blaster-Moa of Surprising Doom or Rook (although this suffers from Curse syndrome). And probably some more that I've missed off.
Comparatively: Merlin is okay... not a Rifter though. The interceptors are unimpressive. The AML Caracal is an outstanding frigate killer, but lacks flexibility. HML Caracal is an excellent gang support platform and brings tactical abilities that no other T1 cruiser offers, but again lacks flexibility. ECM boats need no comment. Drake and Rook are excellent. BS are good in thermselves, but suffer from the impossible fitting requirements of Large Shield Transporters which mean that you're primary and that your gang can't help you.

But since caldari have pretty strong tanks there must surely be people out there who uses them for gate camping and other pirating?
What about minmatar vs amarr?
It seems minmatar are great up to hurricane, but it stops there. No good pirate HAC or BS.
Vaga seems popular but it must suck hard for tanking sentrys.

Edited by: Liang Nuren on 25/10/2009 18:15:26 Gypsio has it right, but I want to point out that Caldari have something of an advantage on gates because they don't rely as much on drones for their DPS.

Ed: I prefer passive shield tanked HICs because they can stay on gates indefinitely. This is pure win. :) -- Liang Nuren - Eve Forum ***** Extraordinaire www.kwikdeath.org |

Quoting truth.
Of all Caldari ships, I would choose the Drake for pirating, since it is effective, versatile, and reasonably cheap. Or the Rook for exclusively 0.0 work although yeah people do tend to give it the Falcon treatment even though a good Rook fit doesn't actually have much ECM.

Harpy do deserve to be mentioned as well. I have used it a lot, quite successfully. Kills cruisers esily enough, and other failure of AB AFs. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ahh, I use a rail MWD+MSE Harpy. It can kite cruisers easily eonough (as well as AB AF abominations), and it has decent enough dps at around 120 ish with medium skills.
Nice solo and in gangs, fast, gets a point on early. Runs on cap boosters.
Current prices are a bit steep tho for a frigate calss hull :/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IMO in order of best to worse pvp races: amarr>minnie>caldari>gallente
I fly mostly caldari atm in pvp. In fact the onyx is one of the ships i fly most. You can get a massive tank on one DPS is ok-good depending on setup. I run an AB on mine as i hate MWDS and the AB is part of the tanking ability( i also fly with TD ewar as a wingman)
Drakes are great ships. They are a jack of most trades( except mining). They can be heavily tanked, used solo, setup with good dps.
Cerberus and Rook are good ships.
It really is a matter of perference.Board warriors down hawks all the time saying they are useless and what not but i have 26:0 kill ratio in mine. so dont always believe what you read on here.
My best advice is fly what you feel comfortable in. For example im very comfy flying a drake in pvp but not a myrm. I am more comfortable in shield tanked ships than armor tanked.

I see.
As for the Hawk, well, AFs are generally crap, being only able to reliably engage frigates and costing 40 mill or so. And the Hawk is the worst AF.

I think its worth pointing out that the drake is a great ship for pvp, but is not without its faults.
******ed people will think LOLdrake, and come hunting you, which is great. But sadly there's not as many ******s as their used to be.
Moderately intelligent people don't like fighting drakes because they have a tendency to be bait, or to be tanked so hard that they are perhaps not unkillable, but certainly not gankable solo by anything less than a bs.
However, don't let that deter you. HAMs drake is filled with pwn, just expect people to bug out instead of yarrrr when they see you.

Watch this...
The Vigil and the Caracal
The Vigil (and sometimes a Stabber instead) tackle whilst a Caracal provides DPS. They even get a Mega at a gate.

when it comes to piracy caldari is one of the best.
natural shield regen is nice, can fit pure buffer and then warp out and regen, most of my armor ships fit a rep just for off gate repairs
the damage projection is rather nice, rage hams will go about 15km, which is mostly what you need for a gatecamp. amarr bs are also nice as they get 15kmish optimal.
