So far, I'm in a little problem trying to find out what I want to do in EVE, so I wish to give solo pvp a try. THe question is pretty much simple. I got around 5.8mill sp, what ship would suit my needs?
Thanks in advance

If you're just learning, then you should only be flying frigates until you've learnt the ropes.

would flightspeed be the best choice of defence?

I see you fly Caldari ships in combat; an unfortunate choice for solo PVP (though possible, and a very good choice for small gang or fleet PVP).
To learn PVP, purchase about 10-20 T1 frigates and fit them out for PVP (use T2 modules as you can afford). You'll want to cross-train; the popular PVP frigates remain Rifters, Incursuses, and Punishers (though that may change as changes to small rigs are digested).
Then take each and every one of these frigates into lowsec and go hunting. Attack any lone frigate you can find, and most T1 cruisers you stumble upon (but watch out for drone boats). By the time you've lost all your frigates, you will have gained invaluable experience in PVP, including finding targets, using your on-board directional scanner, making tackles, evading threats, etc.

Since the rig changes, I know quite a few pilots that have been surprised by the effectiveness of the Merlin. Not saying that its in the same class as the rifter for solo frigate action, but I do think its become a viable option.
But pretty much what Jolo said. Decide what frig you want to use, buy a bunch of them, go to low sec, and go crazy. You will have a blast. |

This is correct.
Also, the Merlin with small rigs is a passable ship which indeed can fight any T1 frig or some combat ceptors. Rifter still remains, due to the optimum mix of range, damage, speed and buffer the best, imo, but Merlin is pretty passable. At any rate, gaining experience is more important at this point then flying "the best ship and fit".

I was flying a drake and was sat at a gate in low sec and had a solo incursus aggress me, don't do that!! choose similar sized targets and learn about how gates work. Biggest advantage you have in a frigate is your align speed which lets you choose your fights and hopefully dictate your range, don't forget this.

Edited by: Lars Lodar on 26/10/2009 11:58:26 Well if you're willing to plunge into the sexy world of piracy, I suggest you check out the Python Cartel Academy. We give lectures on pvp 5 times a week for an entire month for the low cost of 10 million isk which includes 10 pre fitted frigates for your use.
Classes start this Friday so apply now if you're interested.

I used to think that too. After flying the merling for a while, though, I'm really starting to prefer the idea of it over a rifter simply because the huge buffer lets you get away with stupid stuff that would otherwise kill you (like undocking with station aggro :/). If you fit Dual light pulse, neutrons or 200AC's you're pretty much set out to scram range, and the web is very nice to have. I don't think I've lost one in a 1v1 frigate fight since the rig changes, although there's been a couple of close calls.

Edited by: Darcon Kylote on 26/10/2009 13:26:47 It's less about the ship and more about where you go, just because finding solo pvp fights is damn difficult. Try less populated lowsec areas, some parts of NPC 0.0, etc.
Or better yet, join FW or RVB.
If you are limited to Caldari ships, try fitting a caracal with assault missile launchers and go hunting t1 and t2 frigates (inties, some AFs, bombers, all t1 hulls).
You're making it harder than it needs to be going solo though. Join a small pirate corp or a pvp corp of some kind so you have some help and some additional viewpoints and advice.

They added small and medium sizes. Essentially it meant that frigates, destroyers and cruisers could have affordable rigs compared to the hull cost. For some ships (like the merlin) it made a massive difference to its effectiveness in pvp.

Not just Merlins. Makes the standard Rifter better, and means that the shield buffer Rifter is more viable too.
