TL;DR: If you're in a 1 billion+ faction ship, don't shoot at people that enter your mission and steal loot, and especially don't shoot at all THREE of them!
----------
Okay, so I'm sure a lot of people are familiar with this operation.
You probe out a mission runner, provoke them into attacking you, then you beat their ship down to within an inch of its life and demand a ransom for them to keep it. It especially works well with expensive ships, like faction BSes or Marauders.
So, I'm in one of the lower-quality L4 mission hub areas (more low-skill players that way) when our prober finds a Nightmare and locates his mission. He warps in first and reports that the Nightmare pilot's origin date is 2005, so we figure it's going to be a dry well since he'll be too smart to open fire.
We were wrong. As soon as our prober looted one of the wrecks, the Nightmare opened up on him.
At first, when he fires on the T1 frigate that was doing the probing, we assume he figured his alpha strike (with beam lasers, no less) would pop the prober. Fortunately, he started moving and the shot barely hurt him. While he's got the Nightmare pointed and is orbiting too quickly to get hit, I loot another wreck. The second I do, he turns and starts shooting at me, missing me with every shot since I started into an orbit the second I looted. I put a point on him and the prober warps out to go get a more powerful ship. I'm able to keep the Nightmare pointed, but can't crack his tank, having only about 300 DPS. He sends a flight of Vespa drones at me, which I systematically shoot down. Then our third friend comes in and starts shield-repping me with a single drone so he will aggress the Nightmare. We figured it was a shot in the dark. However, to our surprise, the Nightmare turned its lasers on him, so now three people had rights to attack him.
A minute later, the prober returns in his ship, lands a second point, and we start down the long road of bringing down this behemoth. The prober's in a battlecruiser, though, and can't evade the Nightmare's lasers (which I discovered were Amarr Navy Tachyons) like I can (I was in a cruiser), and when the Nightmare's shields get down to 20%, he's forced to warp out.
As I watch the Nightmare's shields build despite my attacks, our third friend comes in and engages, but is in a blaster boat so must get very close. The Nightmare intelligently flew into a cluster of large structures in the mission, making orbit impossible and making it difficult to get in close. I switched to a back-and-forth strafing pattern while the blaster boat moved into range, taking a few laser volleys that hurt pretty bad. Eventually, the prober returns in his missile boat and the three of us drop his shields.
At this point, we offer to let him leave if he pays a ransom. The prober made an offer of 650m. I would have asked for 1 billion since the ship alone is worth that much, nevermind the faction fittings, but it wasn't my call. The pilot agrees, and we split the ransom three ways.
During the entire fight, I, who was the primary target, only took one solid hit, and it only knocked my shields down by about 70%. I'm an armor tanker, so this wasn't a concern.
This left me with a burning question: How can someone with a 4-year old account fall for one of the oldest traps in the EVE playbook? Not only that, how could he fall for it against THREE separate targets in the same encounter?!
The only three possibilities I can think of are that A) He assumed that landing an alpha strike on one of us with his powerful weapons would scare us off, B) His account spent a LOT of time idle, and thus he's actually quite the noob, or C) He had enough money that he just didn't give a rat's ass and wanted to see what we had up our sleeves.
Anyway, a fun little story, and I hope those that read it enjoyed it.

Happens more often than you realise. Age has little to do with intelligence. Some mission runners donĘt understand pvp at all and you never know if a character has a bought account or not. Also GG aiming to blob low sp characters in non pvp fits. ----

Some friends of mine started playing EVE a short while ago and I keep telling them "don't be afraid of ingame age as subscribing to a game for some time doesn't somehow make you smarter. Older players, bigger ships, more pilots don't mean a thing".

I started eve in early 06, when 07 was approaching I was running circles around 03 guys at every aspect of the game (no not all of them :P).
Some people just stink at eve, i've known guys who was whooping everyone they met after a month of game time and SP. Signature needs to be more EVE related. Zymurgist |

....you didnt blow him up? what is wrong with you? you are shooting yourself in the foot, badly. this isnt low sec, that guy probably wont make that mistake again. as stupid as he was most people learn the first time. and dont go citing honor and e-bushido or crap like that. hes another nameless drone in the sea of missions runners. you NEVER build up a reputation. do you know how ofton i have said that i dont honor ransoms? only once has anyone ever in my corp said someone didnt pay him a ransom based off reputation, and he has gotten 150+ mission runners in battleships, and 11 marauders.

you ******, if all pirates did this then ransom would be a thing of the past and nobody would honor it. You give pirates who ask for ransom a bad name and should be taken out back and shot.

You're awfully angsty about a social construct not based on any actual in-game mechanic.

You already have a bad name. I mean, isn't referring to Warcraft a minor sin in EVE? And you went one better by making the reference permanent.
Seriously though, most players probably hate you already. You're playing the game the way you want, and the pirates who don't honor ransoms are doing the same. Embrace the diversity and move on.

Highsec "piracy" is more about feeding on the ignorance of others and exploiting it to the fullest then about actual piracy. Scam artists, game mechanic users, or parasites are all better choice of words, though I suspect they will defend their "pirate" claims. I actually put a bit of faith in lowsec pirates and their offer of ransoms then I ever would in Highsec.
A personal favorite tactic of mine is setting up in Recon3/3 with a Maruader or two that can perma the damage and just sitting there. To date I've gotten several dozen Covert pilots who think warping in cloaked is a good idea. Ooo the "pop" they make. Fly in an alt in a buffer cruiser, snatch the loot, and salvage with the Marauder. I believe I'm on about 20 Sisters Launcher sold on the market in the past few months.

Righton story, but i left dissapointed you really should just kill these guys.
i would never ransom someone that me and my two buddies put 30 minutes droping. km > isk and i bet you that the drop would have been good enough.

i guarantee you that his nightmare was worth about 1.5 bil if not more - one caldari invul drop = 400 mil. to ransom it for 600 mil is laffable.

Similar thing happened to me but the other way round. I had 3 people jump into my mission and start looting. I went back to station and got into a pvp rifter. I went back into mission and managed to catch 1 of them. Popped him and took a look at the km, he had empty hi slots, wtf?

A few options..
Hubris.
Drunkenness.
Figured you were just salvagers.
I wish I could get some nightmare aggro like that. But the way I do it, I warp out in my probing ship since it can't break most mission tanks (and isn't designed to try), and come back in something nastier with a logistics available if its needed.
I can often get aggro on my prober, but due to the unlikelihood of getting a faction fit mission ship to fire on something that's even slightly dangerous is problematic. - Support DISBANDING the Alliance CCP Renamed at the Alliance's Request |

Not that I would ever be caught in a mission... but if I *was* no way I would ever pay a ransom. I would expect to lose the ship and the cash as well. I don't know why anyone would pay a ransom. AFAIK no one honors them. I'm actually surprised that someone would ask and a MORON WOULD PAY?? WTF?

As Heloise said!
But it¦s funny to see how the "piracy faction" strikes against themselves.
This ransom thing will work if the pirate(s) shot me into hull give me 30 min. to clear out this forum to check, if they are "honourable" or not.
When you undock you might loose your ship, and if you aggro a ninja, your chances to get popped raise skyhigh so you have to be aware of ship loss.
And as piracy is not "honourable" DON¦T PAY RANSOMS!
