While I agree with the sentiment, some people don't attach sexuality to their "persona" online, or avatar. It may be more aesthetically pleasing to look at a female character in your character sheet, so why not? Some players use their character as an escape from reality based around themselves, how they envision themsleves, etc etc.
Just some food for thought. Oh god how did this get here I am not good with computer |

I normally use male avatars with fantasy style games not necessarily because I am homophobic, but because I normally have a heavy damage/dps class and I just can't see a little 5 foot tall frame tanking.
Same goes for choosing a 6 foot 7 bulky pile as an assassin or class proportional.
However I never get this whole deal with "omg female char... you must be gay!" thing.

I did try to play a female character in some mmos that will not be mentioned here.
I quit soon and just made male characters instead...

That's an odd one. People do often talk about it and some have strong opinions on it, but for a company to actually enforce it as a rule is odd. Role-playing games are precisely what that name implies, and I don't see a problem with anyone playing a character of a different gender/species.
I think we sub-consciously *want* a protagonist we can relate to or imagine ourselves as, or is similar to us in terms of looks (eg. white skin, brown hair, green eyes), is our physical ideal (eg what we imagine a hero should look like or we would look like if we could choose) or for the imaginative/anally retentive, what *that character* should look like. For the most part, our personalities affect the choices *we* would make in that role-playing situation the game presents us with (eg. sacrifice one to save the many, let the criminal escape to get a bigger fish, etc). Some players are happiest designing a character to look as ostentatious, silly, ugly or twisted as they can, for the laugh perhaps.
But, sometimes it's nice to either explore the game in a different way, see the different content available to the opposite sex and so on. But that's no different in my eyes to replaying a game as a mage instead of a warrior, alliance instead of horde, or whatever. If you enjoy a game and its world why not extend its life and see more of it from a different perspective?
As a female character in MMOs, chances are many people will ask "Are you really a girl?". But offline at least, it's cool to see the other content and...the avatars are easier on the eye In KoTORII f.ex, I've done light side male sentinel, dark side female guardian, in ME I've done male vanguard and female errr....well vanguard again (but only because it's the best class! ) Though I couldn't bring female Shepherd to get it on with Kaiden...hot alien, aasari-on-girl action all the way!
Anyway, nothing wrong with it, but there's something wrong with 'guys-who-pretend-to-be-girls' in chat rooms and that sort of thing, or play their character just so they can take their avatar's clothes off. -------------

Surely this is a bad idea. Instead of players seeing a girl avatar and assuming its a dude, and so leaving him/her alone (except morons who get caught by flirting). Now players will see girl avatars and start chasing her because they know she is a girl.
Girl avatars are gonna have a very long blocklist.

Edited by: Jacob Mei on 28/10/2009 11:36:27 I wonder if this applies strictly to MMOs or to all games as a few games with a female main character come to mind (Tomb Raider, Metaroid, etc). The Chinese government's really been cracking down on gamers though lately it seems.
My opinion on the subject though is unless I know otherwise or am corrected, ill address the player as a male or female based on what their avatar is. I think out of my entire MMO experience ive only had to deal with one person who took it too far (and that person had some deep seated mental issues in my opinion). When my wife started playing an MMO (not Eve. You can guess.) I was amazed at how much easier it was for her to level as a female character. People kept giving her stuff.
What surprised me more was that when we ended up on vent for the first time, I was amazed to discover that pretty much all the other female characters were actually female. It was only rarely that she would end up talking in a raid to have the rest of the vent channel go silent in shock as they realised that there was a real woman playing in the same group.
The whole male-vs-female avatar thing just slips me right by now. I know big hairy guys who play 5ft nothing female avatars, and more than one female who plays a male. I figure it's not really indicative of much at all at this point.

Pretty odd move, and the debate behind this is age-old. Alot people play female gender for aesthetic purposes not because they have yet to mature an attitude.

China has been harping on Gamers for years. Ever hear of how they cure "gamer addiction"? China is doing what other governments have done but only in the extreme, using gamers as a scape goat for their social problems. On an unrelated note, Kneel before Zod! |

TimMc has a good point here, lots of female gamers prefer to play male characters specifically so they don't get pestered by male gamers. This now says if you're a woman and want to play this mmorpg you sign up to being sexually harrassed and don't complain.

Next up is authors. No longer will males be permitted to use female characters and women just wont be allowed to write. This will help to increase the volume of real books while minimizing the socially wasteful and unproductive fiction market.

I think they take you to a rehab centre, basically like an asylum for crazy people and then they do whatever they want with you, the patient isn't allowed to leave until they are satisfied you are over your addiction. Handy for the government to make people disappear for a while. They can basically send anyone there so journalists, people who disagree with government actions or policy e.t.c. ------

I don't see other major MMO companies jump on this bandwagon. (Just saying because there's a WoW character shown next to the news article but it's not related to WoW at all - a company named NetEase is doing that for Blizzard in China).
Personally I'd be against it since the best female roleplaying characters I encountered in my gaming history were actually men roleplaying girls (I know, obligatory "MMORPG = Many Men Online Role-Playing Girls" reference). :O
This being said I believe it's either because the directors of the company do not "get" online gaming - or want to attract horny nerds as potential clients (which will fail). The other option is that some head dev got trolled by some dude some time ago and is scarred for life now. Or he's a homophobe and believes only homosexuals could roleplay female characters. Either way, I hope it ain't so.
Since we're on it: EVE needs more role-players. That would be so awesome, given the dark atmosphere. :O

So it's ok to play as a talking cow or a rotting carcass but it's NOT ok to play as a different gender.
