No interest in this?
I think this is a typical example of you guys thinking Linux is not for you.... but it is! Unless all you do is play games.
Quote:
"Ubuntu 9.10 gives users more reasons than ever to seriously consider Linux at a time when many are thinking again about their operating system options," said Canonical COO Jane Silber. "We are delivering a platform for users interested in an easy-to-use, great-looking, web-friendly operating system. A faster, more beautiful boot and login sequence, file and contact synchronisation through online services and great experiences on the most popular notebook, desktop and netbook models continue to drive Ubuntu into the mainstream of computing choices."

I assume you are trying to run Windows apps under Linux in Wine? Yes, some of them dont work so good.
But Linux apps should work perfectly. I read a lot about new users trying to download and compile packages and so on....and so they run into problems. Its not needed. Just use the package manager and everything installs and downloads in seconds. Done.
Sorry you dont like the look of new Ubuntu.... I love it myself. :)

Hey, i've been running Ubuntu for some time now, and i must say that the Gnome interface is indeed ugly as hell.. but if you try out Kubuntu it got the KDE 4.3 and it is pretty sweet.
I'm going to try out Ubuntu 9.10 later this day, heard it got a pretty good modern design.

Seems a bit unfair to judge Ubuntu on how Wine displays your windows apps... :)
I mean, its another operating system. Its not designed to be another Windows, its designed to be clean, slick and easy. Its a lot like MacOS actually.
Its interesting that people are so used to Windows that they think its normal to have to run antivirus software and reboot the computer every day just so the system doesnt crash or gives you unexpected errors... :) There is a better experience to be had if you would only use Ubuntu for a while. I used it as dual boot with Windows for a while but I never booted into Windows so now its all Ubuntu.
I use Windows at work and now its Windows that feels awkward instead of Ubuntu. In the beginning it was the other way around.

The only thing stopping me from using linux is the games issue. Games aren't all I use my computer for, but they're a pretty big fraction of what I do on here.

Just installed it. Same ****, different version...
It's buggy as hell, and so was its predecessor
As always, onboard sound doesn't work after the upgrade, and the trick I used to make it work in 9.04 doesn't work in 9.10 any more, because asoundconf was removed for good.
Many KDE apps have changed their user interface for no apparent reason than for the sake of change.
All the more mature KDE apps have become cryptic beyond all recognition, only for to be different from well-known, useable Windows apps.
AmaroK, which has been changed already in 9.04 to look not even remotely like a music player, now also uses plasma (KDE's reinvention of windowing). Also, unlike in 9.04, it now has an interface for playing music, but it completely ignores the fact that sound doesn't work, and only produces silence.
Positive: The KDE network manager now actually does something, and it has received an "OK" button. Previously, it was only a sketch of a user interface with no functionality at all.
Also positive: No trouble with nVidia kernel modules, even OpenGL works right out of the box.
OpenGL apps still have tearing and strange timing problems if and only if KDE desktop effects are enabled, so once again, all the awesomeness you see in videos is good only for making videos.
The control panel has been moved again (I call it "control panel", because the Windows control panel hasn't changed its name, icon or location in years, unlike the KDE "system settings", which seems to deliberately move, rename itself and mutate, as if it doesn't want to be found)
When I start KDE, I get a progress bar which says "starting Akonadi server". I have no clue what this is, and the fact that it is called "server" is disturbing. After some time, I get a popup which states that this Akonadi thing failed to start. If I click the popup, it vanishes into thin air.
(This is a typical example of the way in which KDE attempts to be deliberately cryptic. Only when I found it again in the system settings, I figured out that akonadi seems to be some sort of personal information management framework)
Something is wrong with network support. DNS lookups take very long, opening google takes several seconds.
[...]
I could go on like this, but it is too frustrating. I used to be a Linux enthusiast and passionate Windows hater until only a few years ago, and today, I use Windows almost only for gaming. Perhaps I'm getting too old for an operating system that needs to be whacked with a hammer a few times before it works fine, and I've heard Windows 7 is a great OS...
