We currently have white dots. You're complaining about being cheesy?

I set my graphics option to all disabled and all low, the new Dominion stars background made the view worse than the current dots .. imo. The view reminded me of old games with blocky graphics.
It's almost like you're looking at it with a fish eye lens. Right near the center, the stars a look fairly good even at the low settings. As you approach the periphery view, the wiggling masses of small squares (i.e. stars) starts to get real annoying.
Reverting to the original dots for low graphics settings rather than proceeding with a half-broken graphics scheme (if the technicals behind it makes it possible) would be very much preferred.

Widescreen option will make the fisheye camera effect much stronger, so uh, don't use it.
As for the stars, they're okay. I like that zooming in shows more detail, but when the background image gets blurrier it kind of defeats the purpose. If its a necessary intermediate step to replacing the entire bg system with a relative one, I could understand.

Then how come i want to scratch out my own eyes in half the eve systems due to the nebulas?
Havent checked myself yet on the test server, but from the pics and movies i have seen it looks good.

ccp have done a lot of work on it..... Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

I like it, but i do know what you mean by cheesy.
The effect of seeing more as you zoom in etc is cool, but there are a couple of things that bother me...
1) You seem to see more stars around bright objects, ie. around the sun or your engines (as in, bright light sources reveal the stars you'd normally only see if you zoomed in). I haven't done my homework, but i'm fairly sure the opposite would be true...
2) It all seems a little uniform, and far too many stars for that kind of uniform distribution. It'd just be nice to have patches/strands of differing densities, including huge void areas etc.
That said, i think CCP have done a great job on this expansion. Great work on keeping it fresh!

Haven't logged in on the new SiSi yet, but I do have a quick question:
Do the new starry backgrounds replace the old nebulae and relegate those to wormholes or is it just a new overlay of stars on the current background? |

Downlaoad it, the sample makes it look like poop.
At full zoom they become a little much... the effect is great, just needs toning down to roughly what you see at say, three quarters zoom or something.

The new starfields seem to be an underlay rather than an overlay, but yes the nebulas are still there.
The stars come with built in smudges and rings that are effects from atmosphere and the instruments we normally use to capture starfield images.
Can we please please have a 'plain black background' option?

I think that's the point. EVE was inspired by 80's SF movies ;p

You do realize that there are SUPPOSED to be a lot of stars in space? Just go out into the country or somewhere with no light pollution on a clear night and you'll see, and that's through an atmosphere no less.

Edited by: Pac SubCom on 02/11/2009 06:24:14 Yes. In real space, you see many more stars. You actually need to explain why there are so few in Eve - the cluster is less dense than our galaxy.
Footage from orbit is often devoid of stars because of the aperture issue. If you're there yourself, it's a mind boggling sea of stars. --------------- ∞ TQFE

This!
People who live in major cities or light polluted suburbia don't realize that if you actually get away from the light and air pollution, that space has far MORE stars than are present in the new background graphic on Sisi, and that's with the naked eye.
Take this:
star field with nebula
and that's taken from an amateur ground telescope, not hubble or something.
Leave the new graphic in please. It's nice that aspect of the astronomy be a bit more realistic now.
(On the other hand, please reduce the amount of nebulas in systems; there are way too many atm, and imo they are far more irritating.)

I support this thread, the new stars are too cheesy.
I like very much starry skies at night, and telescope snapshot and so on.
But everyone should keep in mind that in space, where you see the sun there is not "night", so you can't see any stars or nebulae because they are far less bright tan the sun or even the things that are enlightened by it.
If you look at real planet photos or sun photos you don't see any stars, at all.
If you are in the shadow of a planet or a moon and there are no enlighted planets or moon in view, or you are very far from any light source, then you could see stars and nebulae.
BTW, I think the problem is that the maximum contrast available in screens is far too limited to render well all those things.
CCP could address this by simulating the pupil closing and opening, so that you understand when (or where) is "night" or "day" in space. For example: 1. when the sun is in view you just see the sun, the planets and moon are very dark, no stars and nebulae; 2. If there is no sun in view, you see very well the moon and planets, but the stars are like the old ones and the nebulae are removed. 3. In the belts, if you don't look at the sun or at the enlighted half of a planet, you can see all the stars and the nebulae as they are now on sisi.
The cases are more complicated than what I described (for example, when you are very far from a weak sun you could see all those things togheter), but I hope you understand.

You are right, those are very beautiful, but the stars do not always look so.
