Is it OK to name your eve charaters after fictional charecters in movies and books? For example, could i name a character "Long JohnSilver" from Treasure island, or "Prince Humperdinck" from the Princess Bride? If these are unnaceptable would a name with a misspelling be OK, like "Prince Humperdunk"?
I apreciate any feedback as i dont want to break any rules.
Thanks for any replies. |

Thanks for your prompt and courteous response. I am happily surprised if this is allowed. I am aware of other games where this is against the terms of service and you get banned for making charecters in the likeness of fictional charaters that may be other peoples copywright or trademark.

Edited by: Blane Xero on 31/10/2009 01:01:24 Good luck even getting close to the original name. Eve has over 300,000 subscriptions which is over 900,000 characters, and that is just the active subs. Many of them have zero imagination and did just the same thing you are trying Thankfully most of the names went to alts that never get used. _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

I'm pretty sure ccp made alts with all the popular names as they all seem to be taken by 2003 characters with absolutely no standings to anyone.

Officially, you can't use names from books etc (see quote). However my name hasn't been changed yet and I've been playing for more than 3 years. As long as you don't give anyone a reason to complain, you'll be fine.

Up to 900K.
Some of us got together at one of the corpie's places tonight. One of the troops logged in and we saw, as dog is my witness, two empty alt-slots in his account!

No way. even me, with my insignifigant one account, has used all 3 slots..
of a random side note. Whatever happened to Faceless Logistics? Blane Xero > Lance is at -0.9 sec status with a 1 million bounty. LAnce is also amarrian. Thats 3 evil points |

This is curious - I wonder why taking the likeness / names of fictional characters was such a big deal in city of heroes / villans, but it is not an issue in eve? I think I should train the intelectual property law skill, but it is saying it takes 3 years to train and costs $100,000.00...

Because in eve, nobody gives a **** what your character looks like. Its flying a falcon, and everyone shoots it anyway.
in COH/V, you ARE what your character looks like. Blane Xero > Lance is at -0.9 sec status with a 1 million bounty. LAnce is also amarrian. Thats 3 evil points |

in Eve, if you call yourself Batman, all that will happen is that people will go as it's silly to have a spaceship pilot called that.
in city of heroes, if you call yourself Batman, then the comic book publisher that Batman is from is going to be annoyed. Superhero called Batman, nope, can't have that unless its officially licensed. Otherwise all sorts of things could happen.

The average per account is more like 2.1 (from Q2 09 QEN).
However this is ACTIVE subscriptions, there would be many millions of characters that belong to expired accounts and trials that were never discontinued.

Is Disney really going to care if you name your character Mickey Mouse? They'd probably care if CCP added Mickey Mouse to the game, but character names, really?

It's not about if they care or not. It's about having lawful support to sue you for $$$ and that is why anybody cares even a little. They see an opportunity to make money off your silly name. Thus they will because they can!
EDIT:
On a side note, EvE is full of nubs who name their chars these names and to try and find them. Put them in court and then getting anything out from it is far more troublesome and expensive than they are willing to do. So whoever is named "Batman" is probably safe.
My opinions belong to me, you can't have them!

They will care when Mickey Mouse makes the regular papers headlines for some sort of major scam.

The thing that cracks me up is all the people who whine about used names being the best ones just because they cant be Jasper Murcheson or Diziet Sma or whatever SF character they like the most. I have seen lots of new characters including my own recent creations without having to resport to DeathKiller1235976 sort of silliness.

What's really amazing are the number of names related to aspects of the game that aren't taken. I was thrilled when I discovered that my name was available.
