Hey Gang,
I'm a budding Explorer/Professional Salvager looking to be able to exploit WH space as well as Exploration sites in K and low sec space. This of course requires a fair bit of mining and while I've a mining cruiser (2X actually) ATM, is it completely bonkers to mine in a BS? The excellent mining guide by Halada put this idea in my head and though he advocates the Rokh or Apoc, I'm thinking about the Min Maelstrom as I generally prefer the Min ships (especially down the road). I can get skilled into a BS much quicker than a Retreiver and for an Explorer, the BS seems a much more flexible and useful ship.
So, my question is, who has tried this approach and is it utter fail compared to a Rokh or Apoc? I realize I'll probably have some CPU issues, but the Maelstrom has a large Drone bay, so I can have both T2 Med Drones for defense, plus T2 Mining Drones for additional mining yield. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Before barges came into the game mining in a battleship was THE thing to do.
Fill the highs with modulated deep core miner IIs (or Miner II's if you can't use T2 crystals) and the lows with as many CPUs as you need to fit everything.
Boy this brings back old memories.

hmmm I don't know mate.. but I suggest you to play a bit with EFT and different ships/configurations to see the differences in ore yield and flexibility. you'll figure out if it worth for you to invest in skills to fly a Rokh or just be fine the Maelstrom.

Works fine for me. Much better tank than even the most elite hulk fits.
You DO have to jetcan, though.
I haven't measured the yield vs. a hulk, but you can pull a lot of ore out with a BS.

The apoc was king of mining battleships. I spent many hours unhappily mining in one. You can fit 8 Miner II's on one (with a couple of CPU's in low). I haven't run the number for a long time, but I remember I used to be able to fill 6 cans in and hour and a half or something. Pretty **** poor compared to strip miners. You'd be far richer if you ran level 4's instead ;).

The Rokh will easily outmine a Retriever, comes close to a Covetor, but lags well behind a Hulk. I don't mine much, but typically mine in a Rokh when I do, just because I veered off the mining path after getting my Caldari Cruiser skill and Astrogeology skill up. I never trained mining barges. Now I'm going back and doing that for wormhole use but it's not at all crazy to mine in a battleship if you can't fly a Hulk or a Covetor. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

My Rokh takes in 1235m3/minute according to EFT, before drones, gang bonuses or implants. Max yield from a Hulk (again from EFT, lasers only) is 1074m3/minute.
The big benefit of the hulk is the massive cargo bay, with the Rokh I have to clear the hold several times per minute. So if you want to be a full time miner, I'd say get the Hulk, but if it's just a hobby, the skill points in the battleship skill will be much more useful to you.

Edited by: pyr8t on 05/11/2009 00:38:36 I mine in my Maelstrom, using miner II's (not the named miner II's) and fill a can every 30-40 min. It's slow and annoying having to empty your hold every 30 seconds but until I get into a coveter it's what I have to put up with.
P.S. For those who know, is it better to mine in a battleship than a procurer?

Use the battleship. Even an osprey can out mine a procurer.

save ur money and time. instead of running 2 more accounts and having to pay off 850M a month, just do missions and pay off the 275M for the one pvp account. U can make twice the money with half the skillpoints doing lvl 4's. dont bother mining in hisec. and if u going to mine in 0.0, u should use an exumer.

You've made a serious mistake in you yield calculation. I'm no where near max skills and I get 1435m3/minute out of my hulk, no drones, implants or leadership bonuses.

To the OP: A 8x Miner II BS is almost comparable to a Covetor. So if you want to be able to mine a little bit, just go for the BS because you can use it for other things too (like combat and so). However, if you want to become a specialized miner, nothing compares to the Hulk.
BS >> Cruiser, Procurer, Retriever Covetor > BS Hulk >> Covetor, BS
>> far better > a bit better

While it does require a faction CPU upgrade to fit a Rokh can out mine a Covetor, both max skills, no fleet bonuses or implants (because even with fitting implants the covetor just couldn't fit and two mining upgrades), Rokh 1235, Coveter 1234.

Wow, lot's of great responses here, thank you. I don't intend to be a dedicated miner for quite some time (if ever), I just want to be significantly more helpful in the group effort than I am in the Cruiser. Sounds like the BS approach is perfect for me.
With that in mind, what would a Maeltrom look like if you kitted it out for Exploration mining? I'm pretty sure I'll need something for rats (T2 drones most likely). Ideas? Thanks again for the feedback.

My main character is a combat character so won't be going the way of mining barge. However, there are times when I'm watching a football game or otherwise partiall occupied where I want to generate some income without running missions.
I fit a Maelstrom as a minimg ship. Duel diode lasers as I can't use tech II. 4 mining upgrades and a cpu. 5 regular mining drones.
My only problem is that it isn't as passive as I intended. I pull in better than 750 m3 a minute, and the hold is only 550ish. So, every 30 seconds I have to move the ore out to a can.
I have a second character that I'm using as an industrial alt. He makes runs in the hoarder about half as fast as my combat character generates the ore. He just got into a retriever now himself,(to be used to ice mine) but could still be throwing off only about 500-600 m3 a min. Larger hold, so it would be quite a bit more passive.
And... now I understand why CCP doesn't let you train industrial ships on a trial account. Every 2 weeks I'd be getting a new trail character just to haul for me.
Looks like I'll be looking for mission space to mine so I can dump to cans with less worry about can flippers... use both to mine for awhile, then flip one over to hauling.

8 mining lasers, 3-4 mining upgrades, a cpu II. With the big drone pay, I fit 5 mining drones and some tech II drones for killing rats. When rats show up, they seemed to always attack my drones anyway, so I would have to pull them in. So, I pull in the mining drones and deploy combat.

I had modulated deep core strip miner II lasers fitted, either they mine less, or EFT doesn't calculate the yield with crystals properly. The maximum for a hulk should have been 1547m3/minute.

They mine less. Deep Core Strip Miners are only for Mercoxit, and those crystals have a lower multiplier than regular crystals do. Modulated Strip Miner IIs are what you use for everything else. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

rokh works great as a miner, but its really stressful having to stagger your miners and empty your hold every 30 secs. it doesn't sound like it would but it can really really get to you. You do pump a hell of a lot of ore though

In-mission I use a couple Brutix rigged up to 2k+ m3 per load to mine; they outperform my Retrievers. Seeing how some folks here show good yield for a Rokh I might just try that to see how well it will do.

Actually the Rohk is great for one thing, tank mining. Back in the day we used to throw a Rohk into a random 0.0 belt and let him soak up the aggro, then everyone else could do some pretty sweet mining because we didn't have to use CPU on tanks for our Hulks. even better the the tank could still help with the mining :)

I mined in a nano navy apoc. Mostly because I am an idiot rather than for any efficiency.
It moved at 2000 m/s between the rocks though
