I've always found them to be more oriental than African. More specifically their ship designs appear much like modern Junks as far as looks go.

The Minmatar themselves seem to be South African in descent, yes. Though the ship designs and names sound very much like they come from Eastern Asia. Such as China and Japan.

Funny that half of their ships are named after Norse mythology if they come from East Asia?

I believe they are a bit Pollaniesian, Maori with a dose of Anglo/Nordic thrown in for good measure (explains the Norse Naming Convention, at least).

Edited by: Kazang on 08/11/2009 02:19:00 No they aren't.
Like all the races in eve they are a homogenised mix of various cultures. Skin colour and looks vary. You can see features that could be from Nigeria, South Africa, Philippines, Australia, Sri Lanka and a host of other countries. The names of minmatar ships and their culture is again a mix of lots of diverse tribal cultures, from norse through aborigine to sri lankan buddist influences.
Like the gallente are rough mix of left leaning cultures and republics. They aren't "french" by design they are just given that background to enhance the left wing politics culture that pervades in gallentean states.
Conversely the Caldari are right wing hardliners with a rigid social structure similar to modern day China, but still strongly capitalist giving it a American-esque influence.

I can't be bothered to go find the backstory for Minmatar (it's 03:45 here), but in there you will find that Minmatar are the best mechanical engineers in New Eden. Guess that explains their preference for projectile weaponry :)

Dunno about the other tribes, but as Sebiestor are the masterminds behind minmatar technology, they have a strong Russian influence in my opinion. Same affinity for simple solutions but somehow crappy craftmanship. If you can't match quality of German tank guns, just increase caliber. Sounds familiar, eh ?

What about the Amarr culture?
I'm not convinced its solely based on American culture. Lots of cultures had slaves and it wasn't just America. America wasn't the only culture with a heavy religious background ether. -

Come on man, its based on the medieval period catholic church, inquisition and everything.
Also americans did not invent slavery, that was thousands of years earlier...later, as euro trash in a new country, they inherited slavery from euro trash who were slaves to romans before slaves to tribal leaders. pfft
Who the hell mentioned russians? maybe actually, russians get their name from the "Rus" vikings that conquered them early in history. Russians were also conquered and kept as renters in their own lands by Mongolia. That is why Russians today have those curious mongoloid/caucasian features after their wives had been bedded for so long by Mongol warriors.
So that could be the asian tie in no?
CCP has shown one thing. they mismatch and mash crap from every culture together with pure lack of planning and concern. Don't try make any sense of it as it simply does not apply to what you know about RL right now. That is CCP just having a vague sense of words being slapped on to something to just do it. Only you ego centric national socialists care to think it applies to your crappy, glorious (it must be glorious, you are from it right?) country

I'd say Caldari was build on a mix between Corporate Japan and socialism. They don't have the individual freedoms of real capitalism, and in several of the eve chronicles they're shown to be the society who treats it's ****ups, criminals and lower classes best. When I say best this of course involves being mindcontrolled, completely cut off from soceity and your family through a strict honor code and so on - but at the least you're not going to end up homeless or starve to dead because the state pays for that.
The Gallente federation is where you'll find the American-esque capitalistic influence. They have complete individual economic freedom of American capitalism mixed up with the social liberties of European democracies. But I wouldn't call them left-wing liberals because of how little welfare the Gallente state seems to have.
