I've been on EVE for a couple of months now. But despite all the forum surfing I've done I have been unable to find out what Ganking and suicide Ganking is. I can guess that a Ganger is someone who ganks but... What is Ganking? I see so many people say something about it and yet, everybody but me knows what it means?

Edited by: Old Bruin on 08/11/2009 16:41:58 According to my understanding, "ganking" is when a group of two or more ships attack or ambush at least one other ship (they are "ganging up" on someone, which I think is where the term "ganking" comes from). It often happens when the group doing the attacking is "camping" (sitting and waiting) at a gate (this is called a "gate camp").
"Ganging" refers to when a group of ships gather together (in a "gang"), usually to ambush or fight one or more other ships, according to what I have read (groups of ships are also sometimes referred to as "blobs" and the act of a group of ships attacking one or more other ships is often called "blobbing").
Although one could theoretically have a gang of miners that go mining, those groups of ships are referred to more often as a "mining op" (short for "mining operation").

"Ganking" is a combination of the words "Gang killing." It refers to when a large number of players gang up on a single or only a few other players and for a one-sided fight which the smaller party has no hope of winning.
For instance, in this kill we brought no less than two battleships, two battlecruisers, two cruisers, and a force recon ship against a single battlecruiser. Note that the vast majority of fights in EVE are gankings - many players will tell you "if you are fighting fair, you aren't fighitng right."
Suicide ganking is the usage of cheaply fitted ships - often ships with a bonus to damage, like the Armageddon - to engage another player in high security space, with the full understanding that CONCORD will come and kill you. For instance, if I scan the fittings of a battleship and see that it is carrying a number of extremely valuable modules, I might be willing to sacrifice many Armageddons - valued at maybe 50 mil ISK each - to kill the battleship and potentially recover its very valuable fittings. Another tactic the Goonswarm alliance is particularly fond of is to locate a popular mining spot - ice belts are favored targets because of the high number of people mining there - and warp in a battleship fitted with Smartbombs. The battleship will be lost, but your buddies can swoop in and loot and salvage themining barge / exhumer wrecks, making the whole thing profitable. ----------------------------------------------

Edited by: Slapchop Gonnalovemynuts on 08/11/2009 16:51:07 In mmo terms(especially EVE), to gank means to attack someone with some modi****of overkill in order to facilitate a higher chance of success. Usually this means attacking something with enough firepower to kill it nearly instantly. Suicide gankers are people who set up ships to have enough damage to kill somebody in high security space before CONCORD arrives, then they sit on a gate somewhere scanning AFK travellers cargo looking for something worth enough ISK to make losing their ship worth the attack. They then attack the target and (hopefully) destroy it before CONCORD arrives. Then their alt or buddy (or a random ninjalooter) scoops whatever dropped from the targets ship and sells it for money to buy more suicide ships.

Guys.. The term 'gank' was being used as far back as the late 1980's from what I remember. It is a general slang term for stealing or taking, usually by force (like mugging). --------------------------------------------

It has also become a more general term used to describe your modules that cause damage, e.g. 'You need a bit more gank on there', the opposite to tank, defensive modules. Pve ships are often made up of gank and tank and nothing else.

Oh, I see. And here I thought ganking was some sort of spec or black op that was unfair and hated by everyone... Thanks for clearing this up.

As you may know, players who PvP in EVE Online do so because they are not l33t enough to play WoW.

The non game expression would be to 'gang up' on someone so its just a bastardisation of that. The 'up' was removed and the g replaced with a K.
A form of ganking unique to EVE is also called blobbing, where you have a large number of ships to attack a much smaller fleet. This is not to be confused with 'bubbles' which are spheres within which a ship cannot warp out. These can be deployed in nul sec, usually at gates, to catch players entering the system.
Both are very boring, like my post.

The work gank or ganking, may come from the term gang, but it really means attacking a player who has no chance of winning the fight. Unfair odds in other words. This typically is a gang of players attacking a single enemy or smaller sized force or it could mean a single player with vastly superior skills or equipment attacking another player in inferior equipment.

Actually, the term "gank" is also synonymous for a "quick kill" or "one shot".
Now a gang can do that on a solo target or even a small group, but if you are flying along in an frig or a cruiser and an Abbadon with a gank fit one shots you, then you could say that was a gank.
