Is there any reason for the much worse planet texture quality? In some previous builds planets had MUCH higher quality than they have now. There is now a much higher variety in planet-types, but quality wise as soon as you start to zoom in a little bit they just look ugly. In previous versions you even saw tiny details at very high zoom-levels. _________________________ EveAI.Live - The EVE-Online API/class library for .Net, C# and VB.Net |

well they went with the high quality focused ones, then scaled it back 3 weeks out to more but more varied. And then they combine this just before dominions for a high quality high variance factor for the final build seems to be on track Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

If it works that way then everything is ok, but somehow I fear that we will miss the last step. _________________________ EveAI.Live - The EVE-Online API/class library for .Net, C# and VB.Net |

i think u might find that the old and new ones might be merged gas planets look like the solid planets in their first spin out. Interesting tho Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

Can we get some shots of the new planets? I just reformatted and would have to download the client and patch, figure this would be faster. ~/~ Sultan of Buruni |

They're using low quality textures to reduce download times on test patches.

that would make sense esp if the graphics are pretty well right to go. So if its low texture stuff the visual stuff will be in dominions the final version Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

That doesn't make any sense as the textures are procedurally generated on the client (at least they were the last time I looked). _________________________ EveAI.Live - The EVE-Online API/class library for .Net, C# and VB.Net |

their generated ahead of time, you don't end up with a new planet every time you warp there. __________________________________________________ All Glory to the Goat Gods! |

Oh okay, so it's not a setting or that the patch was uploaded wrong???? that makes sense and me happy, i thought that they had upgraded to something that was making all the planets come out as paper-mached. So can anyone see what the planets look like? I can only barely tell what they are.

their generated ahead of time, you don't end up with a new planet every time you warp there.
But they are generated on the client (the time I checked). So there is no texture that needs to be transfered or that would increase download times. And I am curious how you know if they are recreated every time you warp to a planet or not (if course it will create the SAME texture every time for the same planet, otherwise procesdural generation would make no sense at all). _________________________ EveAI.Live - The EVE-Online API/class library for .Net, C# and VB.Net |

I think he was referring to the initial patch download times. Maybe they're being kind and not having us download a gig of textures every time they improve/fix/redo one on the server.
I appreciate not having my computer crash every time I warp to a gate or station in any case...though I'd like to see all the prettiness eventually.

I'm kinda into Eve photography, and usually update this when I get a decent group of screenshots together every few weeks.
There's a number of shots there from the last couple of builds, although the lava planets have been toned down a little now.

I don't think that is correct. The planet's surface as a whole is procedurally generated. That doesn't neccessarily mean that they don't use any template textures at all, though. It's of course possible, but not neccessary to call it a procedural planet either :)
Here are some planet screenshots: http://img262.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=20091111141306.jpg
I'll try to add a closeup later.

So the release is soon. Do we have to stick with the sub-optimal planet graphics or are they being tuned up for release day? _________________________ EveAI.Live - The EVE-Online API/class library for .Net, C# and VB.Net |

Wow I must say, most of those screen shots look better than CCP's, fantastic work.

A little bird told me that the current build on SISI is the dominion final build but a few things just need to be finalised and polished. So im guessing that the planets we have on SISI now are the ones we will see on TQ next tuesday. I also agree that the texture quality is poor in comparison to some of the earlier builds and not really sure why , maybe they just didnt want ppl moaning that there rigs cant handle it. Anyhow there a vast improvement from whats currently on TQ and im quite happy with them.

Having a Planet Texture Quality drop down on the graphics menu would just make way too much sense in that case...

if thats so then barren planets have been updated, ice plaents remain meh, storm planets all look the same like a whirly pool. Enough to give me motion sickness and no landmass. Mate, nice collection but I would suggest you use something like this to keep is manageable...
The plugin would allow you to use your own icons, views and you can easily mod it to add a link to the original, full size picture. Currently it's just horror to browse trough there.
I would almost do it myself but it does cost some time to get it right.
Oh and it works in moondoggie.... (without history and hash links, the functionality to add the pages to history and make them bookmarkable (moondoggie limitations))

a plea to ccp please do not nerf the lovley planet graphics at least on the highest resolution levels u must leave them as is. Make the remaining plain planets esp storm ones have something unique as far as landmass goes. Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |

Sure it's a vast improvement from current TQ. But compared to what we already had the current planets look really bad (though the variety is more than back with the high-res ones). If you have a big high-res display the current textures even aren't enough for the jump-in points. And they are absolutly not enough when zooming in. The old ones even looked good at maximum zoom level. WHY? I cant really understand the point with poor rigs. We already have some quality options. One more for planet quality wouldn't have mattered at all. _________________________ EveAI.Live - The EVE-Online API/class library for .Net, C# and VB.Net |

Sure it is a very vast improvement. Comparison wise some are better than others. High res textures need some tweakes but perhaps time has gotten ccp this time round. Jump in points are all over the place, zooming in needs work.
The poorer rigs will need to update graphics card, but yes one more planet type is probably needed as well sandstorm planets went awol they looked nice Signature - CCP what this game needs is more variance in PVE aspects and a little bit less PVP focus, more content more varied level 1-4 missions more than just 10 per faction high sec low sec and 00 |
