That's what holds the nucleus together, it's basically a package of protons and neutrons wrapped up in duct tape. And the duct tape being so awesome, the electrons get attracted to the wrapped nucleus dancing around it, worshiping the duct tape god. The bigger the nucleus, the more duct tape is needed and the more electrons are attracted.

Awesome stuff!
Although it's still bloody hard to get an actual lasting sense of how small some of those things really are. It's basically the same with the macroscopic distances when we look up in the sky though.
