My hardrive failed last night as I undocked, causing much swearing in my house. It is the second Hitachi hardrive I have had in the last 3 months (and the second time this particular hardrive has failed, but I was able to get it going again last time, unlike this time).
Looking at Technical Support forums, it appears as though Hitachi have got a dreadful reputation (I hadn't realised their hardrive business had been acquired from IBM). Maxtor's reputation isn't much better (but I knew that already).
Frankly, I don't think I shall be using Hitachi again, but I wanted to conduct a quick straw poll to see what hardrives you thought were the best and worst.

seagate >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> all other drives
I've had my pc running nonstop for about 6 years, out of the 6 seagates in it I've only had to replace two, in six years of constant use.
All other drives pale in comparison.

western digital or seagate all the wya baby, as for the drive. if it was a brand new one when you got it call the company and see what their warranty is (usually 1 year for hdd's with most places)

WD and Seagate are the best, Maxtor used to have good products but that was in the age of 20gb HDD's. --- I smack just for myself. Allow faction cap boosters to be traded via normal market ! |

Seagate ftw. I had a Hitachi before hand, and while it didn't fail in 3 months like yours, it didn't last as long as I would have expected.

Western Digital would be my first choice, Samsung a not-too-distant second. You never heard of the Hitachi "Deathstars"? -------------

Edited by: Ratchman on 12/11/2009 11:34:59 I have to say, the previous hardrive I was using had lasted around 3 years, and when that failed, I put that down to wear and tear, but these two Hitachi drives have led extremely short lives.
I did wonder if there was something else causing the problems, but I did diagnostics after the last failure, and it didn't detect anything wrong, and there have been no other hardware changes (and barely any software changes). All the evidence does seem to point towards it solely being the hardrive.
When perusing the internet, I found many references to Hitachi, and very little of it was complementary. I did see one statistic bandied around which sounds a bit alarmist, but I'll repeat it anyway. Some of the people posting on technical support forums claim that Hitachi hardrives have a 70% failure rate in the first 12 months. If that is true, it's not much of a surprise that both of mine lasted about 2 months each.

I've been using Samsung Spinpoint F1 drives since they hit the market.
I've built over a dozen rigs, some of which have been running a couple of years now, and never seen a failure yet.
My current rig is based around 6x 1TB Spinpoint F1 drives.
Awesome hard disks.

This... if somthing is wrong on the MOBOthat can cause HDD's to constantly fail. i would sugest having someone run diagnostics on the computer before you put in a new drive to make sure that everything is still working ok.
My choice would be seagate or western digital.
