It is very rare for anything larger than a small tower to be reinforced in w-space, and if it is a small, it was probably for lols by a roving gang that won't be back.

Indeed it was a small tower, and yes it was probably for LOLs. However, it is my precious baby and I'm willing to spend a little ISK on mercenaries to help me make sure it survives. Incidentally it was a small Amarr tower and the attackers reinforced it in a single hour despite three ECM batteries, which tells me they came with at least a few beefy ships. The attacker whose name showed up on the POS attack mail was a Goon, and probably a Democrat or some kind of euro-socialist trash (based on his time zone). The skool did indeed make a fair offer, I just had no idea what the cost of such excellent mercenaries would be, and it was more money than I was willing to spend. Instead I stood guard in my fearsome Armageddon and that clearly spooked the enemies so much that they didn't even present themselves to be slain.
