Edited by: Chipan Asty on 18/11/2009 15:05:07 So I just watched horizon 'how long is a piece of string' Barring the lunatic physics teacher and the physicist with the slightly irritating laugh, I still could not bend my head around quantum physics.
Am I a moron?
And if I am two places at once why am I here and not somewhere better?

Remember what Feynman said..
"I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics."

Pick up one of the many laymans physics book doing the rounds, they will explain it far better than any Horizon show.

Yes you are... let me enlighten you.
A string is double half it's length.
Now you understand theoretical physics.
'Grats.

"The piece of string" question was originally heard in haberdashery. This is an old fashioned term for shops that sold, dressmaking materials, household furnishings and clothing etc. When the goods were sold they were sent to the assistant who wrapped them up. He would unwind string from a spool overhead. He would look at the parcel and guess the length of the string to be used. This was 2 and a half times the length of the the longest side of the parcel.
So how long is a piece of string? 2 and 1/2 times the length of a parcel. http://www.pixelopia.co.uk/files/signature.jpg |

Making a few assumptions there.
But i suppose subjective perception contains more assumptions, so i'm gonna run away.
