I totally just made a thread about this, but lost it due to the "post topic-> log in-> what topic?-> this one-> "YOAR GOING TOO FAST"" bug. ...Thanks CCP.
Basically... what do you think of Yahtzee's game reviews. I'm looking for objective perspectives.
You can find his reviews here, but i recommend watching the older ones. The episodes have gone steadily downhill as he became more popular.

This. He has a certain taste in games and it colours all his reviews. I watch it for entertainment value, but as a source of good reviews it is useless.

Originally by: Destination SkillQueue He also doesn't pretend to know what makes for an entertaining gaming experience for other types of players. He just rants about what he likes or dislikes about them. Bonus points for not putting a number value on his reviews and just talking about how he felt about the game. It has good entertainment value, but as a source of objective reviews it is useless.
Well you touch on my confusion there.
Sometimes he attacks games for playing to the generally ******ed populous (MW2), and sometimes he attacks them for playing to the hardcore gamers (that are us).
Yes, he creates a boolean perspective on both counts, but when combined with, say, gamespot, you end up with a scary understanding of the unplayed game.
A valuable tool in any gamers utility belt, if you ask me.

Yahtzee's reviews while not totally objective (in my opinion, no review is totally objective tbh), and a wee bit over the top, he also has the goof thing of reviewing games from both casual and hardcore perspectives.
there's also some sort of nitpicking from his part, but I find that he's a good addendum review to other reviews. ---

I like his reviews - they make sense. None of this silly "oh i hated this but xyz makes up for it. 7/10"
Id agree however that he is trying to force it sometimes, but thats always going to happen when something goes mainstream. see:Halo, COD.

Every time I watch his videos and I go to post on a forum, I post it in his voice and try to be cool and edgy, fails a lot but I just enjoy Yahtzee's videos for entertainment. ________________________________________________

While I might agree with him for the most part about eve, he had two major flaws with this review.
1)He didn't join a corp. This is an mmo, not a single player game. In this he did lose out on alot.
2)While he watched people fight, it sounds as if he didn't participate himself. As seen from him describing what he saw watching two people fight he obviously didn't understand it's complexity, another words it is like any other mmo... If it isn't you in the battle, it looks rather boring.
This is seen in almost all of his reviews. Typically anti social behavior in social games and thus he fails them horribly. A sign of his background in game producing perhaps?

Hence my 'average everyday gamer' qualifier. You know, the ones who think flash games are too hard to learn to play and made The Sims one of the moast successful 'games' evah.

I really like his reviews, especially the 50 cent one, which played right into my sense of humor.
As a game reviewer, he completely fails to give me anything of value. Then again I play multiplayer games exclusively. The interaction and competition is what matter to me. All singleplayer games are just one big blob of boring in my book.
Also, Massive MULTIPLAYER Online, "Oh I think im gonna go with playing this like a singleplayer game"...
Also, thinks some generic 3d platformer (prince of persia) is the best game ever... (when it is clearly starcraft)

He's an ADHD console type gamer with the attention span of a 2 yearold, if you know that you can expect certain reactions to certain games. thing is though under all the BS and over the top way of stating things, more often than not, he addresses and tackles issues with the games he reviews and actually issues that matter.

I thought some of his faveourite games were Half Life 2 and Silent Hill 2?
Anyway.... for me he is one of the best reviewers around as he is brutally honest about what he thinks, it is also nice to see a reviewer that doesn't prime his tongue ready to lick the backside of unreleased games like Modern Warfare, God of War and Halo etc, sick of all the reviewers screaming "GAME OF THE YEAR" at heap of crap re-packaged games like the ones I just mentioned, bit like buying the same car but a different colour every year or so.
P.S. He is also bang on with his opinion of the Wii, all Wii's should be burned along with the people that bought them.
Thanks

His videos are funny to watch once you've already played the game, otherwise it's pretty much meh.

Personally, I find that he has run out of the material that made Yahtzee funny as every review he now makes sounds the same as the one before and the one before that and so on.
I don't know about you, but I find his whole image to be non-existent because when I see pictures of Yahtzee, I don't see Yahtzee, I see a young guy who wishes he was as funny as Terry Pratchett. |

While his earlier videos were funnier, and with unique opening/closing music, that much more individual (the generic intro sux0rs) the reviews should be taken with a pinch of salt. They're more entertainment than conclusive reviews. As a critic he will almost always find fault, even with the games he likes. Usually it involves trashing overused, badly thought out, silly or inexplicable game mechanics, which I would say is a good thing. It lets you know the major sticking points of a game I haven't played, even if it is thru the experiences of a cynic.
They are entertaining to watch, occasionally laugh out loud funny but don't always fairly reflect a game. But then what makes a good game is subjective, even from the POV of a critic. He famously enjoys RPGs and FPSs while hating JRPGs and RTSs. My taste in that regard is similar, but I enjoyed games he reviewed scathingly...perhaps I just have lower standards. I can't give an objective view, but subjectively speaking enjoy them as you would a youtube video, understand that he has exacting standards and a personal preference and continue to play games you find interesting, even if he trashes them. Saying that, if he praises a game it's probably a safe bet that it's gonna be pretty good. -------------

His reviews are funny too watch and in my experience tend to give you a good feel for what's wrong about a game, although he does tend to forget the strong points sometimes. But for me atleast, if he says a game is absolute crap, it most likely is, and if he likes it, it's a good buy.

This. But its not 100% either as he kind of trashed eve pretty good.

If you're watching Yahtzee reviews and taking them as serious gaming reviews, you're doing something wrong.

I find his reviews useful for pointing out the not-so-obvious but still significant flaws in games. Whatever you may think of him, he always brings up valid points - People usually enjoy those games despite those flaws, it doesn't mean they're not there. Most other reviewers simply ignore them and give all games 9/10 or higher, because they take those flaws for granted - If they even mention them in their reviews.
