Originally by: CCP Hammer Hi, everyone
We werenĘt entirely happy with the direction and balancing of MOMs before development of Dominion began. Even during the SISI tests they still werenĘt falling into place for us. They were potentially too powerful and that would have resulted in a small minority having a lot of fun at the cost of thousands who would be instapopped in 0.0. So we tried to tune them again to a point we felt was balanced, but then the role of the ships wasnĘt clear once we started to lower the damage. Instead, they started to blur with dreads and carriers. .
Thanks for listening CCP Hammerhead Lead Game Designer
Too powerful? You must be joking, they couldn't even break the tank of a dread in siege. 10,000 DPS tank min, 20,000 DPS tank max. Fighter bombers need a big boost to be anti capital ships. Mother ships as they are only do about 3000 DPS with regular fighters and thats 25 fighters. 15 fighter bombers would only do around 9000 DPS.
Where do you get your numbers from a Maxed out Mom pilot vs noob pilot with a crappy dread tank and a lol fit? Any decently fit dread will tank 15,000 DPS in siege. Drones have been nerfed from the beginning of the game. They are lol in the dps they do vs a gun boat until fighter bombers came along. I think ccp underestimates their player bases capabilities in finding effective fittings for tank on carriers and dreads.
Drones as they are only tickle a dread, they are totally useless for carriers and moms with just fighters. Lets face it ccp hates drone boats thats all. So we can stick with our 7000 DPS moros and 20,000 something DPS titans as I hear but who knows what happens when you stick 3 magstabs on the titan. lol Prob do 25,000 DPS. Carriers also have insane tanks like over 20,000 with triage.
So I don't see how these dreads are insta poping to 9000 DPS drones when a decently fit dread will tank 15,000 DPS. I'm lost in where the line is drawn when something is labeled overpowered. Is it vs sub capital stuff or something? Because last time I was in a titan I could insta pop a nighthawk standing still from 60km away with blasters. So I don't see the issue here. It shouldn't have been standing still at 60km away.
So fighter bombers would do similar things to stuff standing still. Then don't stand still, they do crap damage to stuff moving. No smart pilot will stand still. You know whats funny. The tracking on capital turrets is so laughable now that blasters will miss another titan going 100m/s. And thats at about 10km away. Theres something wrong with that picture isn't it? How can a gun miss something thats 15km long. I think somebody is abit too nerf happy. This isn't balancing, its the devolution of technology in eve. Instead of advancing everything deadvances in eve.
And its getting to the point where no amount of skills can fix how rediculess the nerfs are getting. Atleast pirate ships are how they should be now. So why shouldn't super capital ships be the end all weapons in the game when they should be? They cost a fortian only alliances can afford.
Also remember, that you are discussing this on a 1 vs 1 fight here. if it can do 80% damage of a Seiged Dreads tank then that is good. Remember there will also be other caps and ships on the field to do damage. I don't think it would be balanced to have a Mothership own any capital ship in a matter of seconds. This is supposed to be a team game and most discussions here are 1 vs 1.
I would still like to see some form of bonuses for Motherships, the same as what the titans have. Possibly even a lesser bonus, but atleast still a bonus.
Again I say, there needs to be a graph drawn to show cost vs. DPS and that should determine where the DPS should be for this vessel.

All I know for sure is, the longer this thread goes on, the more apparent the challenge of balancing these ships is being realized to me.
CCP has their work cut out for them with this one.

CCP is making another grand mistake by taking steps backwards. Balancing is never ever perfect. The right way to balance an MMO is by adding content that counters overpowerful ships/items/etc... Nerfing stuff should never be done.
And why is it that when I read these dev blogs it seems like it is written by someone who doesn't play the game (or if they do - they don't know what they're doing) but instead relies on their statistics and charts for game analysis?

Flagships. Make the ships capital command ships that revolve around bonuses. Give them some capital fleet command modules.
What set of bonuses would you put in these "fleet command modules" that would be useful, balanced and (of course) aren't the same as regular command module bonuses? I say this not out of attack but genuine interest in the idea.
Well I see two different ways to introduce them while still maintaining balance:
The first would be to simply combine the command modules for each category we have now into fewer modules. So, instead of 3 'armored' command modules, there would be 1 capital 'armored' mod with the 3 bonuses, and so forth for each type. So the fleet could get all the available command combat bonuses from 1 ship with 4 mods running. I don't view that as too powerful since the effect of the bonuses aren't changed, you just get more bonuses from one ship.
The other option would be to add modules that affect the one area current fleet bonuses don't address: damage, rates of fire, and optimal ranges for each of the weapon types, so the flagship would be an offensive bonus ship whereas titans/command ships would focus on defense.

Make a capital alliance turnament with nice prices...
Let all the big alliances in, give them 5 titans, 5 motherships 100 dreads and 100 carriers and let them pick what ships they want to field. 150 man on each team. When the isk start to run out.. the rest jump into BS / dictors / logistics / covert ops / bombers and so on..
Let each team outfit ships for 150 billion isk in pure standard rate minerals. (1,4,16,64,256,1024,4096 isk)

Edited by: stoli''Tulkas on 25/11/2009 03:12:56 Here is the main problem with the direction MOMs have taken. CCP has told everyone that there will be a 40% material reduction in the new SuperCarrier.. and now.. oh, well that won't happen.. we aren't going to do anything at this time, just stay tuned (1 month , 2 months, 6 months , 2 years??? anyone else remember the idea that we would be walking in stations. this the same thing?).
So who in their right mind is going to purchase a MOM for 15 bill when CCP is hinting that a price reduction is right around the corner. and not just a price reduction a MASSIVE price reduction.
You not only kept a certain ship class useless... you made it especially ridiculous to even consider building one.
Basically the tease of the new SuperCarriers has put all MOM production on standstill and anyone who was stupid enough to build a MOM is just stuck holding their ship .. and has no cash flow until CCP makes up their mind. This is super.. thanks. In other words.. so.. shall i just put all my 6 accounts on hold until you make up your mind.. cause all my money and time is tied up in MotherShip production. Stuck holding 4 MOMS.

I imagine many Naglfar pilots, many Phoenix pilots, and many who have or dream of having a Mothership one day are doing exactly the same thing I do... which is check back every few hours over the course of the last few days waiting for (1) an announcement of a Dominion delay, (2) an updated dev blog outlining fixes to many blunders in the existing proposal, and/or (3) any word that this is still going ahead as planned.
iGoogle has been great with the add-on that allows you to monitor dev blogs... and just from discussions with alliance mates, these changes are really going to hurt. I'm already cringing about bringing my Phoenix out to play with the new explosion radius post dominion if these changes go live

Anyone still hoping for anything else from CCP at this point is going to be disappointed. They're in a feature freeze by now on the release and instead of pushing it back to clean up this mess of crap with capitals they're just going to release it anyway. Screw anyone who has a ship affected by these pointlessly overboard nerfs or whose 14-16B ship becomes a POS anchor.

CCP
Are you really going to release Dominion with the current incarnation of capital and sov stuff? I really hope you understand that we threadnaughted here not to be emorage but because the status quo of dominion is terrible.
Sov RF timer = 2 hour variance ..... You said you wanted to end timezone warfare. How exactly does this mechanic do anything but enforce timezone warfare. IMO the variance needs to be set @ 5 hours or more to make any real impact.
Sov Cost - You stated you wanted to end AFK alliances and make alliances shrink the amount of space that they claim due to needs. With the current incarnation this goal has not been reached. Sov needs to be much more exspensive but to balance this rewards of 0.0 needs to be boosted greatly. Basically if effort has been applied and risk has been taken 0.0 should yield much more then empire income generation.
Titan - 5 minute timer and 200-300 % dmg bonus on turrets would have been acceptable. With the incarnation you suggest I guarentee you they will see very limited fielding. Nobody wants to put a 60 bil isk ship on the field to frag a 1bil dread every 10 mins.
Motherships - the EHP boost and jumprange changes are nice. The removal of fighter bombers was a bad decision. The capital killer role was a good idea. It seems you got scared of Mothership wolfpax. Space is a evil cold lonely place and its dangerous. The Eve player is a hardcore MMO'r if we wanted no consequence watered down MMO's we would all play WOW. 16bil isk and 8-10k dps with fighter bombers.
Nag/Phoenix - Why? Do I even have to illustrate how dumb this change is. Look in the mirror and try to say this is a good change..... you cant right..... so yeah bad bad change.
Short range Capital Weapons. Nice Idea but they wont be applied unless a group can metagame on there enemy and know for certain that fitting said weapons will work. Imagine a short range fitted dread fleet getting dropped on by a long range dread fleet. You just lost your dread fleet. So in reality you wont see these being used most of the time other than the Squeaky 3rd Wheel that has entirely too much isk.
I really feel like as a designer you should have to play the game 10-20 hours a week and actually be involved in the game. That way your perspective on whats needed is based on knowledge instead of perception.
Please unfack dominion! Abathur has alot of knowledge when it comes to 0.0 play and imo you are fools for not drawing on that rescource more. ________________________________________

Wow, 56 pages of EMOrage.
All I have to say is that CCP NEVER promised that anything seen on sisi would make it into a release. They have always said "nothing is final until it is in the patch on patch day".
Which means that everyone who is going around planning ahead and stocking up to buy whatever, or not buying whatever is just plain being stupid.
Frankly, if I were CCP, I'd hire at least 1 person whose sole job it is to put mostly realistic nonsense onto the test server that will not even be considered for the final patch just to watch the tears of all the people who took something that showed up on sisi as gospel despite all the warnings to the contrary. Or if we had decided that shipclass x needs a slight buff, say an extra 5% resist across the board, I'd put it in sisi as a 5% reduction in resist across the board just for the fun of it. Just to reinforce the fact that it is the test server, and not everything seen there is real.

With all this gripping from the player base and no further communication from CCP on the matter, I think the next course of action would be to grab your torches and pitchforks, and go storm the castle....
Seriously tho, this is getting ridiculous. I'm not a capital pilot by any means, so I try to stay away from the details of what gets nerfed and damage types or DPS and all that wonderful stuff; however, as a player of the game and a loyal customer to the CCP corporation ... can we not have some answers to these questions? I know Dec 1. is right around the corner and all, but still ... is it to difficult to continue a discussion on a topic that is obvious, a lot of people are still sketchy on?
A little word from on high goes a long way.

Originally by: CCP Hammer First, IĘd like to say that a single developer cannot come in and unilaterally change everything with no oversight. People are spewing a lot of hate at CCP Nozh but instead itĘs a case of shooting the messenger. He is just doing his job trying to improve the game and explain the reasoning for why changes were made. We work as a team and agree on the direction things are taking. We want the game to be balanced and fun for everyone to play. We also think about the future of the game and how it will be in years to come after our changes weighing the medium- and long-term repercussions.
While this might be true, Nozh doesn't help his case. The target painting comment is a perfect example of what really ****es off 0.0 players. You should probably use a different messenger and have someone else edit/proofread their devblogs to prevent player eruptions like that. All players see is a developer they already don't like saying "hey we're removing all those nice ms changes, also here's some new capital weapons balanced around target painters working on targets they don't *actually* work on, have fun!" In case you've forgotten, most of the players I'm referring to don't like this particular dev because the last time a controversial change was made (speed/nano), he came up with some pretty outlandish examples to support his claims. Players aren't going to react favorably to such things. So while your statement about how changes are made/not made by single developers is probably true, perhaps you should evaluate it from the point of view of a player that doesn't understand how your internal controls and flows work. All we see is this guy we already don't like from a prior bad run-in feeding us some more garbage changes. Not flaming, just trying to give you some constructive feedback on how you might better handle something like this in the future.
Quote: We werenĘt entirely happy with the direction and balancing of MOMs before development of Dominion began.
How would thousands be insta-popped by the supercarrier changes? I'm confused as to how fighterbombers were some unstoppable weapon no one could deal with compared to current fighters. If you increase the signature radius on their torps/weapons/whatever high enough so they only affect capitals, I really do not see how they were all that overpowered. Having said that I understand if you didn't like the role. Seeing as this is mostly a 0.0 issue and you aren't sure what to do with it, perhaps you should ask the 0.0 players in the CSM to gather information for you. I bet if you talked to the various mothership pilots in the 0.0 alliances you could cobble together a rather good idea of what works/does not work with motherships as-is and help form an idea of what you want them to be. Hell you have a good case subject working for you now (Seleene) to jumpstart that. Currently I would say they're just fleet support, they can carry a pile of extra dictors/tacklers/cynoships to fights and hand out fighters. In the devblogs, it's made clear titans should be the main logistics vehicle in the fleet, so that doesn't leave you many roles for the mothership to fill. If you don't like them as anti-capital combat ships, consider making them anti-support combat ships instead to make up for the void left by the Doomsday removal. A decent example of this would be increasing the regular drone damage, range, and speed on motherships, or making fighters much more effective against battleships.
Leaving them as-is really leaves some of your more advanced players in a bind, because if you completely revert the changes they are really ineffective (especially the HP changes, since Titans will really rip them apart). These ships are not easy to use, they're not easy to move, and they don't really justify the price. You don't have to do MASSIVE changes to make them all that useful. A "yea we screwed up here's some freebie changes" example would be increasing the jumprange to match dreadnaughts. That won't be massively gamebreaking, but it will really help out because currently that is a major hurdle in using them. I don't think that's going to get ANY complaints from anyone, and it'll show people you're not the heartless bastards people think you are currently.

Did you even stop to look at what they did accomplish instead of what they had to drop because they once again bit off more than they could chew? Typically that is a bad thing but at least they're putting out an expansion and for going a few things they still want to tweak. In terms of expansion changes that are being made this is a healthy expansion. Grow up, quit *****ing about how they didnt get all they wanted too into this expansion and wait for the friggin mini expansions they did like with the rigs a few months back. God damn im sick and tired of hearing people whine about how CCP lied to them. ****ING GROW UP YA BIG BABIES!

Can I ask CCP: When would a change such as was planned to Moms next be likely? Will it be left until the next major release (6 months) or is it possible it comes in an intermediary patch? Not when will it be, just when could it be :)
Thanks
Do you seriously think you will ever get a real answer to this? You are talking to CCP here they can't even finish a ****ing expansion before their deadline let alone set a ****ing schedule or do things right your lucky to get an end result at all.
Did you even stop to look at what they did accomplish instead of what they had to drop because they once again bit off more than they could chew? Typically that is a bad thing but at least they're putting out an expansion and for going a few things they still want to tweak. In terms of expansion changes that are being made this is a healthy expansion. Do you have any idea how many times CCP has cut over 50% of the "Proposed Game Changing Features" to their expansions last minute and never bothered to follow though with them after words? ( it happens a lot )
