Yeah, only people buy macs because they are superior to every pc there is when it comes to working with media.
Iphones are stupidly expensive and only recently has their feature set caught up with the other high end smartphones - things like the HTC pro whatevertheyrecalled series offer the same/better and on top of that are much more flexible.
Ipods, again, are expensive and heck my old zen can do the same as most of em + it has epic battery life. If you don't care for the touchscreen that is, but hey, theyre meant to play music and movies, if I want to touch something fancy I'll get a callgirl.
Macs..well I don't have much experience with photo/video editing myself. I know a couple guys who use them for their work and lets just say that they haven't been unanimously positive.
Add on top of that the terrible case of the smugs that some people catch when buying an apple product and that sort of settles it for me.

If you are stupid enough to think ipods are "top of the line", arguing the point would be moot. Go drink some more apple kool-aid. The views expressed by me in my forum posts are in no relation to my Corporation or my Alliance. I swear my cat made me type them. |

If it's a desktop just put one together yourself Newegg is having an awesome black friday sale right now... but if it's a laptop then alienware isn't a bad choice. |

Don't buy Alienware. I just bought a laptop, and was actually looking at Alienware, just comparing prices. I ended up getting a laptop for under $1,600 with these specs:
Intel« P9700 45nm "Montevina" CoreÖ2 Duo 2.8GHz w/6MB L2 On-die cache nVidia GeForce GTX 260M 1,024MB 4,096MB DDR3 1066MHz Dual Channel Memory 500GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)
Do you know how much that would have cost in an Alienware laptop? Well over $2,000. They are overpriced machines with glitter sprinkled all over them.

Share your CURRENT computer specs with us so we can help a little more, also you said 4 year out of date? well the RAM and HDD was the last thing on your list.
Since you said january new graphics card i am guessing your not getting this built for another few month.
You should have bought the case FIRST, then PSU, then plan on mobo and CPU, then graphics card and then RAM...cooling next, HDD and CD drives all that **** should be last on your list. There cheap anyways. ú50-90 for 250-750GB HDD and like ú20 per diskdrive.
This means, you buy a case. Sits there for a week, you buy a mobo. You fit it so it is not lying around. Same with CPU, slowly you will build it together and it will be complete before you even realise.
Do you have a case already? its the most important thing along side the PSU in your computer, your PC is worthless without a decent case to put it in. (cooling, airflow, noise, dust, space)
I recommend the Antec 900 (ú70) or Antec 300 (ú40). Easy and spacey cases for a first timer and excellent for air cooling.

Ok just came back to check this thread hehe, Ill get talking ****e shall I.
And we then come to problems.
OK your system is pretty dated but its not that bad, I have seen worse.
There is 2 options I would go with, people can add on to this.
You can go with Option A
Upgrade your GPU to something along the likes of a 9600GT-9800GT Can gurantee that PSU came with the case so its for the bin as well
This is cheap, not exactly and upgrade and would be simple. This would also pretty much bottleneck your GPU as the CPU is ancient, Mobo and DDR400 ram is pretty damn outdated as well.
Or option B
Ditch the motherboard, graphics card, CPU, PSU(Power source), Ram. Start clean and if your case is big enough you can keep that. If not you want to start off with a nice spacey, nooby and simple case. Antec 300 if you think that is ugly....Antec 900 although the 900 needs some love and should be properly cable tidied to get good airflow.
Whats your budget here, I understand you were going for an alienware, so you either clueless or have the money
I am more into Nvidia so I will give my view on that.
Already mentioned a case so will move on to Mobo,
Nforce 750SLI In the mid range price for Mobos, DDR2 Ram and SLI support as well as Phenom/AM3 Socket. Also nice built in chipset cooling and is not too chunky either so easier to handle.
LOTS of people prefer Intel but I do not so meh, dunno why I like nvidia cards with AMD's, I used to run them back when Nivida never kissed Intels ass and ATI never kisses AMD's ass. So with that said.
Simple Best Bang For The Buck, AMD Phenom Quad Good thing about this CPU is it is very easy to over clock and runs the fastest in its price class. Needs a good PSU to run.
To start off with RAM I would go with either 4GB or 4GB(lolwut?), with the 4GB(The first one) I would run x4 1GB sticks DDR2 800mhz, for the 4GB run x2 2GB DDR2 1066mhz. Second option is rather pricey so first off I would go with 4 of these G-Skill 4x 1GB DDR2 800
Now GPU, depending on how rich you are this is the hardest choice, although from the start of this post I was already recommending the Zotac GTX260 216 Cores
Now IF you have the money, get a Pair of these if not 1 will be good enough trust me, I run 1 on this computer and its a very good card. Just whatever you do, if your buying them NEVER EVER EVER buy the 192 Core shader version, get the newly 216. Its the same price fot a 3-4% increase in performance.
If your really really wanting to go hardcore you could get yourself a GTX285 or 2 but then I would have to go back and get a better mobo.....after me doing hours of searching for a decent one

As for PSU it is one of the most downright important thing you can ever buy for your computer, most people buy all these fancy parts and then stick a ú20 PSU in it. Do not neglect it. Last thing you want is your GPU blowing because some cheap ass company can not measure voltages.
You need a 700Watt minimum and around 1000Watts @ max, try this Coolermaster 850Watt I am not a big fan of Coolermaster (even althought I am running one, nice and silent) as they are not as good as toughpower but they are expensive. If you have the cash this is probably something you might be more interested in Toughpower 850Watts
I would never buy a Case off thermaltake, or cooling solutions as they are pretty **** poor for there price. I like there PSU's though.
I basically just built you a mid-highrange PC with just links. For a reasonable price. Only thing left is your cooling but stock cooling is normally fine as long as you are not overclocking. 1 thing you should consider buying is a aftermarket CPU cooler. This perhaps Zalman CNPS CPU Cooler
If you do go through and buy a Antec 900 the fan layout on that case is pretty sweet and should cause you no problems at all, just do some Google work and you will do fine. Just for the love of god do not waste money on Alienware, Dell, Acer, Asus etc etc.
Nothing annoys me more than some poor bastard getting charged ú2k for a comp and a ú500 is the same.
If you need help hit me up in-game or whatever, glad to help...hopefuly someone can improve on my post as I aint no guru
