Hi guys. I'm quite new to eve but I have been doing LOTS of research into the game. I'm not much into combat although I have had a little go at some missions.
I've been doing some basic trading which is ok for income but is a bit boring and was looking to get into some manufacturing and invention. From what I can see tech I ship manuracturing is highly competitive and tech II rig construction seems to be more fun and probably more profitable.
So I thought I'd start by making some small shield and weapon rigs since looking at killboards, a lot of frigate losses include these type of rigs.
I HAVE read invention guides but have a question...
As a beginner I wondered how much of the process I should take on myself... like researching my own bpc's, getting research agents of my own, or whether I should just make a contact with a bpc seller and buy everything else off the market.
It's a long process and as a newcomer I wonder if I should just concentrate on skilling up for the invention part myself.
Thanks for reading, and hello!

Highlighted the problematic bit. Do the math. Maybe some rigs are profitable, maybe they are not. Maybe none of them are. I don't know!
Getting research agents would be a good idea in the long run. It doesn't take that much effort to get your standings high enough, and it's effortless income once you're there. Do note that getting your datacore from the agent does not make it 'free' - if it goes for 400k on the market, that's what it is worth. Same goes for any other materials. You'll get shived on MD forum if you try to prove otherwise. A unit if trit is a unit of trit, no matter where it came from.
Making BPC copies required for invention jobs could be problematic. Most copy slots in NPC stations have a 20d queue (PTOOMA). You can either buy the BPCs from someone or set up your own POS with mobile labs.
Another thing to consider is how much capital you'll need to get started on a scale that will bring you acceptable income for the effort involved. If you only have enough money to supply materials for 1 m-job, this might not be worth the effort.
Just some things to consider; is all.

I will be keeping a close eye on this definitely. Been looking at traded volume and contracts to get an idea of demand. Don't know that many people in game as yet but may offer requests to more pvp oriented corporations (although they may well have their own supplies already)?
I say pvp because they are more likely to need replacements! I'm hoping to offer fair prices and hopefully avoid the undercutting game on the market.
At least initially I just want to dabble in a couple of rigs or two. I have ... 'sufficient' isk to invest in perhaps 5 rigs at this time. The bpc's are cheap but the whole process looks to add up a fair bit. I would need to build up some research/manufacturing skills anyway but have maxed my intended skills for now and need to branch out.

I wouldn't dream of giving my hard earned datacores and materials away for free. Pardon me if I suggested that

I will look further into researched bpo and buying off established researchers, thanks. I think at the moment I need to work on some calculations as I really have no idea how much researched BPO, or BPC's should sell for.
Oh look at me babbling; thank you so much for your time in replying.

This isn't to brag, it's just to try to give you an idea. At the moment, I've got about 2.5 billion in the wallet. I have a CNR that's almost fully faction fitted, it cost me about 1 billion for the hull and everything on it. I have about a dozen various T2 ships, all rigged, and about 5 different battleships plus 5 battlecruisers, all rigged. I'm contemplating buying a Tengu for wormhole operations; the boat, subsystems and modules will run about 1 billion if I go through with it. If I have nothing else to do, I can run missions making over 20 million an hour. In a wormhole, I can easily double that but not sustained for an indefinite period of time.
I have NEVER even considered buying a T2 rig! Perhaps on a Titan or a Mothership, but they just don't provide enough benefit over the basic rigs to justify the price, in my opinion.
I definitely encourage you to look into invention, but do the math first before you start inventing anything. Since T2 rigs are sold over the market, I'd look heavily at the volume traded. I don't think rigs have T2 BPOs out there, but I suspect that even if they are profitable it's probably not going to be a high volume of sales on it. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

Due to the rig changes allowing small, medium and large rigs there is some room in the market for these.
While the guy above says he doesn't I'd definitely consider them for T3 ships, marauders and pirate faction battleships that I'd use for PvE.
I have done a couple of invention jobs on the T2 medium cap control rigs for someone's T3 as they did work out cheaper than the market, so there probably is some profit to be made. Though bear in mind that our corp runs a POS for other things and the labs costs are covered by other activities.

T2 Cargo rigs are the only thing I would invent honestly. People will use those. Others, not very likely. They use up too much calibration, cost too much, and offer little more benefit.

You will be hard pressed to find T2 rigs you will make a profit off of in any decent quantity. There are some, but like T2 ships, the profit is very thin.
I tried it, and without being able to obtain the salvage myself via salvaging to at least lower the physical cost (leaving me with only opportunity costs), we decided that it just wasn't a worth while investment for a small corporation.
Now if CCP follows through with their idea of salvage alchemy, that may change drastically. ---

Many thanks for the information. Profits might not be much but I'd like to have a go at it! Can always stick to regular manufacturing or go into tech II production at a later date.
The initial costs are not too great that I don't mind taking a financial hit to at least play around with invention and see if I like it :)
