Couldn't have a long enough thread title - I wish to import the amount of money in my wallet into excel spreadsheets without having to log on/check evemon and type it in (essentially it's just me being incredibly lazy) - whether I can get it to automatically update or set up a macro to refresh the info doesn't really matter. I'm sure it can be done... I just have no idea how :)
Cheers. ------------- Rough Necks Alliance

if it's your personal wallet balance then it's easy enough, you will need the following information:
characterID userID apiKey (full api key)
With that information you create a xml import that looks like;
http://api.eve-online.com/char/AccountBalance.xml.aspx?characterID=xxxx&userID=xxxx&apiKey=xxxxxx
Map the resulting import to the page of your choice and your wallet balance will be displayed in the balance Column.
You could create a cell that creates the link for you so you can copy and paste it, there's nothing worse than making a typo and not getting anything at all.

Might I suggest you look into google spreadsheets and the importxml command. Good guide here: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/09/google-spreadsheets-lets-you-import.html
I use it in several places to grab data from web api's, including eve-central's average prices for certain items. It loads fresh data when you open the spreadsheet.

Edited by: Pellit1 on 02/12/2009 15:04:35 okay I have the URL with my user Id, API e.t.c - How does one go about creating an XML import though?
Edit: I think I have my character ID mixed up with something else... when I open up my link in a browser I have some script with:
<error code="105">Invalid characterID.</error>

characterID? There is an API for that!
-or-
you can hover the mouse over your forum picture. The characterID is the number after cid=.

Steps to create an api link in Excel 2007.
Build connection string for easy mistake correction
- Paste http://api.eve-online.com/char/AccountBalance.xml.aspx? into A1
- Enter your userID into A2
- Enter your apiKey into A3
- Enter your characterID into A4
- Paste the following into A5: =A1&"userID="&A2&"&apiKey="&A3&"&characterID="&A4
- Copy and paste A5 into a browser address bar to test the string. Make corrections if needed.
Import XML from API
- Copy the contents of A5
- Select an empty cell. I choose B8
- Switch to the Data ribbon
- Select "From Other Sources" -> "From XML Data Import"
- Paste the connection string into the File name box
- Press the Open button
- Press the OK button on the dialog box that says "The specified XML source data does not refer to a schema...."
- Select the option "XML table in existing worksheet
- Press the Properties button
- I named the XML Map eveapi_Map_charBalance. The other options do not need to be changed.
- Press the OK button
- Press the OK button
The data is now imported. You can then reference this data in other sheets. We no longer need the A1 through A5 data.
The data can be refreshed from the right click menu of a cell containing the data. XML -> Refresh XML Data. The Refresh All option on the Data ribbon also works.
You can edit the placement of the XML data by selecting "XML" -> "XML Source" from the right click menu.
Steps to move the location of the balance using the XML Source window. - Select "Remove element" from the balance right click menu.
- Select the cell location to place the balance data.
- Select "Map element" from the balance right click menu
- Press the OK button to confirm
The balance will show up in the new location after you refresh the data.
Hope this helps.

Fubar - that's excellent. Sorry it's been a while and this is a bit of a necropost.
Is there any way to import *just* the wallet amount? when I follow the steps I get all the data including the dates, accountID e.t.c ------------- Rough Necks Alliance

You can remove the elements that you don't want.

If it makes you feel better once you get past the horrendous UI issues office 2007 is actually pretty nice. But the UI is such a good example of the Good Idea fairy. Btw, great thread. I know there are a lot of people out there who would rather do the analyses themselves but don't have enough programming knowledge to know how to do things like POST and whatnot. This has actually been driving me a bit nuts for a while, and this will make my life like a million times easier.
Edit: and dude, never turn down more data. Never know when you might need it. Just ignore it for now, but those things are IMHO really valuable for certain analyses.

Will these methods work with open office? Would the commands be different?
