Originally by: Erin Xaelan The "crappy" looking ships in EVE are not bad design at all, but rather GREAT design. Their intention with a lot of the Minmatar ships was to make them look fragile, thrown together with little planning, and very..."We need spaceships to keep up with the other races"-ish.
I'm sure they spent hours and hours designing all of these ships, and I'm sure they ALL look exactly as they want them to
See, this would only make sense if all minmatar ships looked slightly different from each other. If they really used any available components lying around, no two ships would be the same right? Instead it seems like minmatar deliberately chose to import the exact same type of industrial leftovers to every shipyard to make the ships look the same...
Besides, over time wouldnt the designs improve a bit? How long ago did the minnie uprising take place?
Still, while I dont feel anything in particular about the tempest, but the Typhoon is a very nice looking ship.

I wish they would switch the helios hull back :( I refuse to fly that lopsided melted plastic soldier thing.
Arazu is pretty crazy looking. I don't think any of the ships are terribly ugly, but probably the imicus hull.
On a side note, I kinda hope for a higher-res texture upgrade down the line. The views expressed by me in my forum posts are in no relation to my Corporation or my Alliance. I swear my cat made me type them. |

My entry for "ugly duckling": the Gallente Exequror. This is a CARGO cruiser...it looks nothing like a vessel meant for hauling.

Moa. I can deal with asymmetry, but the thrusters are placed in such a way that the damned thing would just spin in circles. As such, watching one in game just offends my suspension of disbelief. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!" |

Minmitar ships tend to look like you need to fit a tractor beam/salvager to pick up the pieces as you fly around but the ugliest ship?
Imicus -- it looks like someone dropped/bent it and stuck it back in space, hoping nobody would notice.

TBH, half or more of the old ship designs are nuts and fugly, at some point I hope they will decide to redesign them all (huge work I know). The ones who draw them had the aesthetic sense of a pigeon.
The newest the ship the better the design is in general and its obvious there is more pro touch on them (some stuff got better in CCP, like the art desing team, too bad gamedesigners don't follow the same path). Maybe the exception are the gallente, but that's because the gallente theme makes no sense in general.

Stupid looking:
Navitas Looks like a fish with, for some reason, a turbine in its midsection. Where's the ore going!?
Exequror It's a space-cactus.
Imicus Looks appropriate for a mining ship, but it's just a lump of metal. An oddly shaped lump of metal that certainly doesn't look like a scanning ship.
Tempest How many odd-looking extremities can we pack into one ship?
Awesome-looking:

Because engineers really do understand the calculations behind antimatter quantum flux plasma graviton tachyon thrusters, its sci fi it has no relevance to any real world physics.

Because I was bored...
Ugliest Frigate: Griffin - wtf on so many levels Weirdest Frigate: Breacher - looks like it took some of the shipyard structure with it on the way out Coolest Frigate: Magnate - slick and has the best T2 variant by looks
Ugliest Cruiser: Celestis - it looks like an engine array stuck on the back of Jabba the Hutt Weirdest Cruiser: Exequror - the engine design reminds me of Hellboy's hands Coolest Cruiser: Vexor - c'mon, it's the happiest hull around
Ugliest Battleship: Dominix - love the lines and textures of Gallente ships, but this is just a turd hurtling through space Weirdest Battleship: Tempest - this is a BATTLEship? it looks like a garbage scow: truly Minmatar; although "Clear Skies" redeems the hull design, it's still the weirdest Coolest Battleship: Abaddon - big engines, big broadside, best tier 3 BS hull

I've always thought the Raven was particularly ugly. It looks like you're flying a Gothic Cathedral that fell over in a strong wind. I've always thought the Drake looked kinda thrown together too.
I quite like some of the Amarr ships. The Harbinger is a favourite, and their freighter ls a rather effective immitation of a ****roach with no legs.

Well, you making the mistake of assuming they were cobbled together from physical components available in a scrap yard. I feel that they were cobble together using readily available components already mass produced by what little manufacturing industry the Mimatar had. Basically they didn't have the luxury to design the ships from the ground up like the other factions so they instead resorted to cut and paste blueprint creation. Use the propulsion system from this design, the life support from that design, the hardpoint mounts from this other design, that type of thing.
Originally by: Tae Ren Besides, over time wouldnt the designs improve a bit? How long ago did the minnie uprising take place?
Maelstrom, Hurricane.
While the overall design has stayed relatively the same I am quite sure that there were some serious internal structural modifications over the years on most minmatar ships, propulsion upgrades, power plant upgrades etc. Upgrading how the shipp looks would be pretty low priority. This is more obvious with the fleet issue variations.

That seems to be a recurring observation in Eve. Many not all but many, of the ships look nothing like the the roles they play.
Weapon placements seem like an after thought. Just tack em on any old place
Edit - I also refuse to fly an Armageddon because it looks like a big ****
Though I like the Art Deco like designs on many of the Amarr ships. |

Poorest design has to be the Itty V. With those engines in the center like that you would quickly have 2 Itty IIs on your hands. BTW ... Anyone else think that the front of all the Iterons looks like the old Anaheim Mighty Ducks logo?

Originally by: Avoida Looking at ships with the eye to a 'form follows function' mindset really does make one wonder how those two relate when looking at many EVE ships.
Engine placement is another puzzling aspect of ship design. So many ships are lobsided if you look at relationship between a theoretical mass centerline and potential thrust output. An engineering friend of mine who's a bit OCD was looking at EVE and, after quite alot of calculations and modeling, determined that the vast majority of ships would spin out of control. Luckily for the Amarr very few ships appear to suffer that fate.
Yes, 'real' physics don't apply and yes, the uniqueness of the designs add alot of flavor to EVE, but sometimes it is difficult to suspend one's disbelief in the face of creativeness.
I'm pretty sure that if you go on to say that not all the engines have to supply the same thrust, that you can get them going in a straight line. The bigger problem is that some of the ships don't have any apparent way to turn in certain dimensions from the way their engines are placed. For example, the Tormentor frigate - with both its engines in the same vertical plane it has no way to turn left or right, only up or down, by altering the thrust of the engines. ________________
