ok this black screening has happened before as some of you know. Microsoft office installation wad required for that fix along with some finding altering the pref file a fix too. This time around some have found fixes that worked for them and I am very happy for them but I'm still messed up.
Story...
Day one. Patch day. Downloaded patch which failed. Deleted client and did full client install. Failed. Did manual download. Worked. Game ran wonderfully then I had one of my clients crash. I then undocked and black screened on undock. I had a second client open on other monitor and upon undocking that character it also black screened. Loaded up last client and he was already in space from before patch and that went straight to black screen after character selection.
Day two. Ran to this forum and posted petition. Ccp and everyone both stated cache deletions/renaming needed to be done so I did it. Allowed me to log in but screen froze 3 seconds after station loaded. Note this was AFTER ccp ended the session on my characters(the first two on seperate clients) with the server and placed them back in stations. Still couldn't get my third client character to load in space as he was left there.
Day three. Eventually I decided to simply move the application cache and settings file folders(the same location ccp keeps telling us to go to to rename/delete) and game loaded up no problems. Client crashed and all started again.
Day four. Updated video/audio drivers. No help. Kept trying to move the whole folder containg the cache and settings to the root directory as before but noticed the I was getting another cache/settings folder being created in the default location.
Day five- yesterday. ****ed and just fed up so I ran home for some buisness and decided to give it all another try and I'm able to log into station but client locks up after three seconds. Haven't dared to try to undock again.
NOTE: I have been noticing 90% CPU useage with just one client running.
System: alienware xp 8800gtx quad core van provide more info when back home Friday.
Plan/offer.
The first link is to an extremely similar situation that happened around two years ago. One of the guys was out of town for three months and he noted ccp hadn't announced a thing. I'm done with them. You guys analyze, detect and fix **** faster and more efficiently than ccp especially when they know this issue is only affecting a rather small portion of their player base.
I will be back in town Friday. You guys can post your possible fixes here and the moment I'm home I will try them out from this thread. NOTE: treat me like a person that doesn't speak computer. If you need more info just ask as I'm sitting around on my iPhone and will be bored over the next two days.
IF none of the options work, I will send you guys some isk for just helping. IF you want to help me in a more real time setting we can use windows live messenger or a vent channel or something if you like, once I'm back home this weekend.
If you read this massive wall of pain there will be a bonus of one billion if your fix works for me and I like how we worked together. I will probably use you in the future for my problems ingame as well.
Things I've done: cache/setting deleted, renamed and moved. Played with graphics settings/interval immediate/one/default as well as resolutions etc. Disabled eve sound disabled audio driver I was unable to find the pref file and I did set hidden files to show. I renamed the eve folder
I am willing to try the above over again BUT only with someone I'm in direct contact with. Posting here should be for requests for extra information that might lead to an innovative fix.
P.s. I'm not chribba but I do have a rep ingame so you will get paid and I will expect a post from those that helped and the one that solved it, if possible *sigh*, to post here that you were paid.

Some clarficatioms.
1. We can work together in the future only if you want to. I didn't mean for that to sound like you had to.
2. Post here as well if you want to get on contact with me this weekend to help. Larsonist > i still enjoyed the pew pew though, all the pos sh!t ive been doing lately had me feeling like smeagle without his precious. |

It really looks like prefs.ini is causing lots of people some grief for this patch. I'd re visit that as a possible workaround for the time being.
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\c_program_files_ccp_eve_tranquility\settings <--- Paste that into your browser and see if prefs.ini shows up there.
If not:
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\
Keep in mind if you delete this and it does work, you'll have to keep doing it until CCP pulls their heads out of their arse.
Also refer to this thread: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1228971&page=1
CCP is addressing this issue and trying to get feedback from the community for a valid solution.

Edited by: Larsonist on 09/12/2009 18:36:35 Thanks drunken, I'll try those when I get home.
Lork(sp) on iPhone apologies if I got it wrong.
Latest service pack of windows...3 I think? Latest nvidia driver which was dated 11/13/09 I believe. I used to have the alienware custom windows xp on the machine. It was a faulty build and was causing sporadic windows boot file corruptions so I had it replaced with a standard copy and all is well with that. Directx is 9.0c o believe?
Thanks for replies, like I said I'm not in front of the computer and won't be until Friday. Bare with me until then.
If we get a good fix it will benefit the community. If it helps me that is great, but I sure hope maybe a revelation happens that will possibly benefit all.

Drake pretty much what I have going on in the background is:
punkbuster antivirus(turned off firewall along with windows) steam(offlined) printer various other processes all linked to windows and/or Internet. I can give you a betterdescription in a couple days.
As far as active programs I've always had vent open with usually two clients running and an occasional Internet explorer opened for say dotlan maps. Since this stuff I haven't attempted to load up anything but the clients themselves

Got a Intel Dual Core Box Win XP (Custom Build) With SLI'd Geforce 8800's Tied to a RAID 1 array and having no problems here...
Course I have an unusually paranoid security package (Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite) and no problems here.
Using Steam to handle EVE as well.
The reason I mentioned my graphics card is I had to roll back the drivers 4 to 6 times before SLI kicked in... and never had a crash since then.
Have you tried downgrading your graphics card drivers to see if they yield different results?
Thought process - I NEVER UPDATE Windows unless I'm forced too.
Last time I updated windows... it killed my #@$@#% RAID Array.
So I avoid messing up the status quo unless its necessary.
My hatred of windows (with a passion) tends to give me insights in getting it to do what I want it to do.
Only thing that's current is DirectX.... thats about it... everything else is... slightly oldish. ========================= CEO of Shadow Cadre http://www.shadowcadre.com ========================= |

Overheating? Try cleaning out the inside. Make sure your video card and CPU heatsink fans are working and there isn't any dust bunnies clogging it.
My second suggestion would be to check your RAM.

Its easier too see the system and what you have as in programs and drivers. My suggestion too you would be too completly unistall Eve and any folders too eve and do a cleam sweep and defrag. Then uninstall your graphics drivers and up date them with a clean install. (reboot system) Then download the lastest eve client and reboot and then patch it if needed.
A black screen can be caused by drivers not installing proply and the vid card over heating as well some virus cause a black screen that involved your win32. If your getting a blue screen of death chances are your ram is giving out. All in all if you don't have anything important on your rig you can always reformat.

Usual things.
1. Check drivers. I've had Nvidia drivers randomly spaz out on me although usually it BSoD's saying "nv4_disp.dll". Try Reinstalling them. Ohh. Don't for a second think that Microsofts patches won't/can't upset drivers. They can, will and do. Nothing says awesome like your chipset driver being part banjo'd by MS's forced auto-update.
2. Have you installed anything recently OTHER than the Dominion patch? If so, remove it.
3. Antivirus solution. If it's made by Norton or Symantec... KILL IT!
4. Task Manager, what, if anything else is using the systems resources when EVE is running/not running.
5. Heat. When my laptops innards get furred up running two clients, even with minimal settings becomes nigh on impossible. Defurred and one on max and one on low is fine. Doesn't seem to creap up either just bam "slow" and time to hunt the bunnies. And yes, the CPU useage goes through the roof as it throttles back.
De gunge your system, regunge the heatsinks with new thermal paste.
6. Bad Caps. It happens, even to super doober "high end" components. As you've got your head in there with a paint brush knocking the dust out of things, check to see if any of the capacitors are leaking or buldging. If they are... new MoBo time.
6.1 PSU going **** up. Boot, mash del and go in to the BIOS, it usually has a voltage checker in there. If any of the voltages are massivley out of whack (i.e. -12v rail is suggesting its -20v) borrow a new PSU and test.
6.2 Bad RAM. Unlikley but lets get it ot of the way. Google memtest86, burn the ISO with it (often Linux LiveCD's have it as a boot option... or did) and let it pound on your system for a good long while (at least two full rounds). If anything turns red... new stick o' RAM time.
7. Format, Reinstall. If nothing works. And it's that important. Backup EVERYTHING. Go grab your install CD's and nuke it from orbit. Again, Windows does collapse under its own weight, again, usually patches from MS tip it over the edge. A fresh install, fully patched from the get go works much better.
I'm not pointing the finger at Windows or Microsoft. Even a multi-generational /home/ folder on a Linux install feels fresher and loads quicker when vaporised and relaid due to all the cruft accumulating overtime.

Edited by: Larsonist on 10/12/2009 12:50:54 Sorry for late response.
Thanks for all the replies! While vaneshi seems to have literally hit on every possible option I, once again must stress, if I were to consider any one of those I would simply take the computer to a shop. I took it about 7 months ago for a clean install and checkup. Getting rid of that crappy alienware proprietary xp did the trick for my booting issues.
Having said all that I updated my laptop with the patch last night in the hotel. It's a hp dual core
Invidia 7800 running vista [edit: oh and it has only 1.5 gigs of ram] Guess what. Smoothest patching ever.. Not only could I play wonderfully I loaded a second client(although slightly laggy) and it was flawless except for the gate jump bug that resets your view to close in on your ship at each gate jump.
I run each machine with similar type software so I can only assume a few things.
1. It's xp conflicting perhaps with something else. 2. It's my machine. Alienware simply hates what ccp has done and is torturing me. For a high end machine it is an extremely tempermental bastard.
I'm going to try all these options when I get home guys. I will try them in desending order and if I get to vaneshi's post I'll even try those to the best of my ability.
I will also contact the guys offering assistance if they still feel so inclined.
Thread is still open so feel free to post more.

1. did you encounter this problem or a similar problem in other games ? if you did, what games and what was the problem. if eve is the only game you play, see 4. 2. open 1 instance of eve, open the task manager, maximize it, sort by cpu load(click the cpu tab twice) and take a screenshot (press the key PrintSCR, then start->run->mspaint and paste the image there (ctrl+v or from the menu edit-> paste), then save it as a JPG. 3. go to http://cpuid.com/pcwizard.php and download that software, and take a screenshot of the voltage / temperature page (this one http://cpuid.com/pics/pcw6.jpg ). 4. in PCWizard, go to benchmarks and run a benchmark for cpu, one for memory, one for directx (videocard).
If the guys before me don`t fix your problem, evemail me or find me ingame and i`ll give you my gtalk id to see how we can fix this :)

1. I've never ever had a critical failure such as this on any game I've ever played. About 5 mmo's and countless regular games. This specific computer has never ever not loaded any form of software nor has it ever not played said software. Only issue it's ever had was with the original windows loaded on it which was removed and replaced and even that copy of windows only had system boot startup issues.
4. I'll check those stats out thx. Larsonist > i still enjoyed the pew pew though, all the pos sh!t ive been doing lately had me feeling like smeagle without his precious. |

I don't think a lot of you are comprehending the situation he is having. I am also having the same issue since the new patch. Having one client open can run my cpu to 100% constantly. This has nothing to do with the vid, network, chipset, sound drivers. This is related to optimization done by CCP or lack there of. Something within the eve client is running processes in the background that is over utilizing CPU threads and it's uncalled for. Before the patch and I mean right up to the day of the patch I could run two clients on the same box full out without any lag at all, nor did my processor reach anywhere close to 100% or 50% for that matter, even when playing on two eve clients, listening to music or watching a movie and browsing the internet. SO other then myself are there any other IT people here that would like to take a crack at the issue? I believe it's solely to do with the eve client and how poorly it has been optimized not to mention the extra corification they have done in the new patch. My system is similar to his and I have no issues with black screens or disconnects, only the cpu problem now. I have went so far as to update everything driver wise on my pc as well setup a ramdrive and juctionpoints for the eve cache folder. Still 100% cpu. I have noticed that it won't spike until I lauch the jukebox or the browser. It seems as if the client is not releasing open process threads. But that's just my two cents

I had a similar problem which was fixed by a new graphics card. Dunno if that's an option for you as it seems you have a new laptop. Regardless, it implies that your problem might be fixed with updated drivers. I know you updated your drivers, but did you try the reference drivers? The alienware drivers? The specific card manufacturers drivers? There's several options it might be worthwhile to check... presuming it's not the hardware itself.
Also... do you have all the graphics settings to low/turned off? Just for testing purposes?
