In order that your likely to skill them up.... any destroyer huricane golem
huricane works quite well- a bit over 2k cargo with expanders in the lows, destroyers are fine for lvl 1-3's but the cane is almost essential for lvl 4's
the golem oc can salvage as it goes.
others may suggest the orca or the tengu/other t3- while these may have some slight ability i find the above mentioned ships much better/easier to use

My Hurricane has about 3,100 cargohold, or just over 4,000 m3 with a GSC. I cross-trained to Minmatar just to get it.
I actually own two of them for salvaging. One for missions that is 100MN AB fit for max cargo, and one for w-space salvaging that is 10MN MWD fit for archology and hacking, but with 3x Salvage Tackle rigs (still it does 744 m/s with my poor nav skills).

The cormorant is the best destroyer because it has the biggest cargo...after that any battlecruiser with a ton of low slots. It depends on if you're looting as you go, and how much loot there is. The salvage itself is tiny and fits easily inside a destroyer

The Comorant is the worst Destroyer as it will end up with the smallest cargobay. A Catalyst with 3 cargoexpanders in lows and a 2 Cargo rigs will land around 1200 m3 cargobay, way more than a Catalyst can achieve.

Catalyst
Highs 8 x Salvager II Mids 2 x Cap recharger II Lows 2 x Co-Processor II 1x Signal Amplifier II ( Remember to get the skills for 9 targets ! ) Rigs 3 x Salvage Tackle
Thats 65% salvage chance, meaning it will 99% of the time, only take 1 cycle to salvage any wreck.
Use a Marauder to tractor and loot :P Most people will read this thinking it's part of my post, when its actually my sig :P

Cormorant is the best for any mission with more cargo than will fit in a cargo expanded catalyst. That's because it can easily keep 4 tractors, salvagers (or whatever your highslot preference) and an MWD going nonstop and tow around the loot can the whole time (the one you'll be filling up to come pick up with your hauler or whatever). Since you're only going to be fitting for A) speed or B) cargo, both the corm at catalyst are better than the others thanks to slot layout and fitting... but in the end, they all get the job done. And it's not like there's a big difference in cargo space between the bunch in the first place.
But, yeah. These forums seriously need some indicator that the post has ended and the sig has started. EVE has devs that care about sound? (Ha ha ha! Gotcha. It actually doesn't!) |

The best standalone salvager that I've used is a Hurricane.
I generally 3-box missions now and run a Gank (Paladin or Golem), Tank (Dominix) and Tractor/Loot carrier (Orca) for most missions when I want to salvage/loot.
The Domi has 3 salvager II's. The marauder can tractor close wrecks and the Orca gets the farther ones. The Orca can also contribute some DPS with medium and light drones.

IMO:
Destroyers are great entry level salvagers, catalys being my fav.
Then you have the hurricane. It can hold all the loot and salvage from even the largest L4 mission. You can use other BCs, but if you are running L4s, you have BC trained, so it doesn't take long to get minnie friv IV and cruiser III.
Then you got your maruaders. 100% bonus to tractor beam range and speed allows you to loot and salvage as you mission with a single ship. Mission runners can't really top this.
An orca can be a nice support salvager, with it's huge tractor range, but its limiting with its 3 high slots.
Then you have your T3 salavagers with their 100% bonus to tractor (with the locust). Honestly though, spending near a billion isk for a salvage ship is simply stupid. Get a marauder and be done with it.

I have multiple ships scattered all over the place for Salvaging, but I have yet to find an L4 combat mission this beast can't haul out in a single pass. It doesn't move terribly fast, but if you want some extra space for Mordus 4 or other high yield missions this will work.

AB/Cap Rechargers can be swapped out. Holds a bit over 6Km3 without the two GSCs it could carry if desired.

iirc tractor beams only pull at 500m/s which you can achieve with A/B so there's no point in MWD.I use a cormy only because I'm too lazy atm to train anything else, but will look at others, I 3 box so when I'm running L4's I have an alt to follow me round with a viator.

Edited by: Julia Venatrix on 11/12/2009 16:56:59 A Stabber is an interesting choice - fit cargo rigs, 3 tractors, 3 salvagers, 10MN AB II, 2x LSE, and then lows are cargo expanders for looting, or overdrives... because you use the same ship for Recon 3/3. It's not as much space as a Cane, of course, which really is the business.
If you are Amarr-only a Harbinger is almost (but not quite) as good as a Hurricane. --- Some days you are the pigeon, and some the statue. |

Fleet Stabber w/ Slvgr II x5, Nanos x3 + Instab x2, 10mn ABII and 100mn ABII, LSE II x2 Rigs- Salvage Tckl, Poly Carbon & Aux Thrusters
Zips around at insane speeds for a cruiser and the 100mn AB gives you all the boost you'll need in those few mission spaces where an MWD would not work. This ship allows you to leave the last spawning BS or a number of frigates in the room to ward off Amateur ninjas while you come back in a ship that the Herons & Probes won't be looking for and clean up the stuff that matters. It's not as good as salvaging as you go, but it probably decreases your chances of getting invaded by a good bit since you're not coming back into the mission space w/ a BC.

With max skills, salvage tackles and a cargo expander a corm goes just short of 1200m/s. Tractors have 20km range, that means you can go full speed for about 30 seconds before you outrange whatever you're towing. So the MWD is still put to good use.

For in-mission salvaging I've always used a catalyst. Just use an afterburner to get to distant wrecks faster, salvage as you go. Then again, I'm two-boxing and I'm not sitting at the keyboard waiting for the salvager to get to the next clump of wrecks - it will be there by the time I switch back to that console.
I don't tend to do post-mission salvaging, as usually by the time the mission's over the wrecks have been picked clean by scavengers.

The trick to a salvager isn't how fast it can salvage, but if it can hold all the loot. Destroyers are great salvagers as long as you understand you're coming back in an industrial for just about any L4 mission's remains. This one.. not so much. Fitting an AB instead of a MWD is just preference.

If want the 40km tractor range of a marauder, but dont have the skills for it, T3 cruisers are a cheaper option needing much less skills to run.
The 40km tractor range, cruiser sized hull .. tends to loot/salvage quicker than destroyers etc.
If your a mission runner then a T3 salv boat may be something to aim for between the destroyer type of ship and a maruader. If buy your T3 hull and subs on buy orders, can generally pick one up for 350 mil with change left so its not that expensive.

Unless you're salvaging 3-5 missions, in which case you aren't going to be holding all of the loot and speed is everything.
Consequently...

For Level 1 - 3 missions a frigate such as a Heron is a viable choice. Equipped with speed modules, it can actually fly to the wrecks faster than you can tractor them in.
