Me and a few friends were wondering about WH's and it being a potential place for us to do some occasional mining. We were wondering what kind of npc's and damage to expect and what sort of tank will be needed to be safe in those belts?
Anyone here experienced in mining in WH space?
Any help is very appreciated!

Wormholes don't have asteroid belts. The only mining you can do there is either at the crappy asteroids which may be present at cosmic anomalies or in gravimetric sites. The sites have pretty good ore, so that's all I'll talk about.
Grav sites in wormholes have no defenders at first. About 20 minutes after the first ship arrives a group of sleepers spawns. Depending on the site the number and type of ships varies. You typically get anything from 5-6 frigates to a mix of cruisers and frigates. I've heard the really high end Core deposits in class 5-6 wormholes will spawn 1-2 advanced battleships, but I've never done one of these.
What we usually do is either warp the mining vessels out right before the rats spawn, or just keep a combat ship sitting there until the rats are dealt with before sending the mining ships in. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |

I live in a C2.
There is only one annoying gravimetric. It has an "Electric Field" that hits for 400 EM damage about every few seconds. Lost a Heron flying to one of these to mark the Arkonor for my Hulks. The damage is pretty trivial to tank with a passive Hulk.
I do recommend fitting Hulks for EHP, and using ECM drones (and learn how to deploy them so they always jam). You never know who will uncloak next to you in w-space, even if you constantly use the directional scanner.
C2 sites are pretty much a joke; you can do everything in a Drake. C3 sites require a heavily tanked Drake to solo (>700 DPS tank), so are easier with more people.

I also have a Scorpion ECM ship to deal with trespassers. It is very effective in getting people to leave.

I have done some WH mining and what Gavin (2nd post) said is spot on. What I would normally do is scan down the grav site, warp to it with miner alt and my BC/BS (depending on size/class of WK). When the Sleepers show up, warp out miner and deal with them with my main.
Once they are clear, warp miner back and go get my mining support ship Orca or Hauler.
I have usually found at least one A (whatever the A type ore is I cant remember) roid in each grav site in low end WHspace. And ists usually a good size too.
I have often filled up my Orca with A-ore. Very tasty!

Since discovering wormholes I have organized and run a fair number of WH mining ops for my corp and have found there are a couple keys to a successful in-and-out op.
Don't fly anything you can't afford to loose. Leave the Hulk in k-space if you aren't prepared to loose it, a Covie mines enough to be worthwhile and costs 1/5-1/10 of what a Hulk does. Take haulers instead of an Orca. Orcas are very nice, but they EAT mass from a hole, a couple Orca passages and the hole will collapse, leaving all the miners in the middle of a WH. Haulers have a much better kg/m3 ratio and are much more disposable. Keep someone with a probing ship on hand. If that hole closes behind you, you'd better have a way to get out, otherwise you've just lost every ship and implant you have in the hole. Bookmark the WH the instant you come through. If you don't BM it and don't have a probe launcher or a friend, you're stuck, simple as that. Always watch your scanner. Set it for max range at 360 and have everyone pinging theirs constantly, if anyone else shows up, that's your cue to bug out.
The SOP for our group when we decide to go WH mining is that I'll start looking for a good WH with a grav site or two (this can take a couple hours if you're discerning or grav sites are hiding in the middle of lots of other sites). After I find one or more sites, I'll usually warp my Drake in and keep probing sites out while waiting for the rats to spawn, the massive passive tank on the Drake means that the rat frig DPS isn't a real concern, so I just kill them when I notice they have spawned and keep looking for more sites in the meantime. When the rats are clear, I pop back out to k-space and show the miners in to the roids. We usually have a couple Covies and Rets mining and a Mammy or two hauling to the nearest station in k-space. Once the hole starts having time or mass issues, we all pop back out to k-space and split everything up. We've pulled out 120-240M ISK fairly easily a couple times, and the limiting factor is always either the fact that it's 4AM or the WH's mass/time.
TL;DR: Don't fly anything you can't loose Always have an exit strategy Watch your back
With regards to the DPS tank you'll need, I'd probably want something that had atleast a 100 DPS tank and 15-20k EHP minimum (omni tank, sleepers have uniform damage/resists). Last one I did in my Drake I'd guess I had 200-300 DPS tank and 40-50k EHP and my shields didn't go below 85-90%.
Fly safe and have fun. </alt>

Ah yes, the Isolated Core Deposit. The electric field is 500 EM damage every 55 seconds. It's easy to tank if you set up properly. ______________________________________________________ Isn't it enough to know that I ruined a pony making a gift for you? |
