Just wondering if anybody that's familiar with the Walking in Stations and Flying on Planets crap is buying this Dust 514 stuff?
Btw, they had screenshots and vids for both Walking in Stations and Planet flying when they announced them as well.
Any thoughts?

Dust is after that.

Dominion -> Something with planets / prep for dust/incarna ->* Incarna -> ???
* Dust 514 for consoles somewhere between the prep and Incarna, probably...
Anyway, thats what you can make up from the info released...

My thinking is Dust and WiS will be released side-by-side, or maybe WiS a bit sooner as a beta test of the engine.
It makes sense. It gives stations an actual purpose as a point of direct contact between Dust players and EvE players.

That would make alot of sense actually. Not just that, but with corps and alliances having the tactical room at their disposal where they can see stats of what's going on, on a contested planet.
And whiskey; you can find the pics linked in this article about Dust: http://www.eveonline.com/pressreleases/default.asp?pressReleaseID=60 - - - Aloriana Jacques - Skill Sheet

From articles ive read... Dust 514 has nothing to do with Eve..Sense we can't go to Dust planets.its got no purpose.. Why couldn't they add the game to Eve? You might mention a different engine.. Just imagine a transport ship taking down Dust marines to a planet..now that would have a purpose.. but all Eve and dust have is, getting to see Eve players and Dust players in the walk-in-stations which is pointless.

Dust and Incarna are not sharing an engine, fyi.

Not quite vaporware, since we will see Incarna eventually, it's just that their focus/intent with the update has grown beyond initial goals.

Vaporware or not, Still going to log on play EVE. It doesn't matter to me if I can't get out and walk in a station or shoot people on planets. Neither are new to the world and I'm sure nothing is going to be different out of these two.
I will stick to my Killzone 2, Modern warfare 2, Halo, Half-Life, Counter-strike, Gears of War, Socom, Splintercell, etc... for shooters.
and PlayStation Home for my walking around for no reason.

Don't know about you, but a lot of the NPC "RP" stuff in the EVE News sounds to me a lot like setting the scene for release of Dust 514 in the near future. I wouldn't be surprised to see Dust 514 on the shelves in a couple of months.

I know some of the Dust 514 concepts are in the Art of EVE book, and that is a few years old now.
Regardless, I just hope the whole "only for consoles" thing is a cleverly deployed anti-hype measurement placed to keep the EVE players in check, so when they release they will reveal its PC port aswell and people will go nuts and their sales will skyrocket, and the game will be good, and it will be balanced so that it feels meaningful but not have an overpowering effect on the 'verse, and there will be no latency issues, and, and, and...
Yeah, with games these days I wanna see it before I believe it. Following games like Jumpgate Evolution, Black Prophecy and Earthrise has made me realise that games aren't released before the fat lady sings.

At fanfest CCP said that Incarna (walking in stations) will come after DUST514. DUST514 coming when it's ready.

This seems to be a recurring theme amongst utter, utter idiots.
Idiots: If you can understand this, and you're not too busy watching Big Brother or downloading Shakira ringtones, please answer a question: Why exactly do you think Dust and Incarna are 'vaporware'?

I really hope they decide to either...
A: Not have DUST 514 impact the EVE universe in any way whatsoever,
B: Wait for Jumpgate: Evolution to come out first so I have somewhere to jump ship when it goes **** up.

I am studying games design , and from what i gather from going from total nothing with a large team you could do a game ground up in two years with a very large team. CCP do not have such a large team working on DUST and so will take longer to produce something from ground up.
going through such a course it is now settling in how hard it is to make a game and have a much greater respect for CCP and the teams they have there at what they do.

Didnt CCP state that dust has been in developement for about 3 years now.
As for WiS, they didnt like something in the original lighting engine so went away, found the company based in oxford that had a lighting engine, and so they integrated it, all of which takes time.
Personally from what i saw at fanfest it was a major improvement on the previous incarnation of WiS, more realistic, and more atmospheric, but thats just my impression.

Infamous on the playstation took 4 years with a team of 200 people, i believe dust has a very small team of around 50-100 or so in shanghai.

Have done a bit of reading up on Dust and im really looking forward to seeing it coming out. Running your own corp in EVE and keeping your own fleets fighting out in orbit for a planet, while you got mates on the PS3 / 360 are doing the grunt work on the ground. Does sound really really awesome. Not fussed that peeps wont actually see "face 2 face" in game, instead having to use a chat box etc to cross the system barrier. But bring it on, it will add a new spin on things. The vid on you tube (I think it was) mentioned that the Dust troops will get around on Warbarges, I hope we get to see these scuttling around the Galaxy rather than just have them "appear" on a planet.
I just hope that its done well, esp if they are going to have 3 different systems bouncing information off each other as to what the overall shape of the Galaxy is 23hrs a day.

Whos being impatient, Im looking foward to seeing dust, maybe even playing it.
Just repsonding to the OP, CCP arnt going to throw away 3 years of game development at this point.
Also they've had some intersting network and integration issues to overcome. not to mention, the release of the newer consoles in the mean time.
Personally i think they've done a sterling job in such a short space of time.

Weeel you are wrong.
Dust is totally different game in different platform. Dust will take part in planets, while WiS (wich is for EVE and codenamed INCARNA) will take part in stations.
WiS in EVE will be come when it's ready.
It's funny tho how people think that they will have two games interacting that way they could shake hands in station...

WoW had hundreds of developers and took, what, 6 years to develop? Patience, dude. These things take YEARS, not months. We are lucky enough that CCP is willing to tell us what they are doing AS they are doing it, and not AFTER they have already done it. ---------- There is always a choice. The choice might not be easy, nor simple, nor the options be what you desire - but, nevertheless, the choice is there to be made. |
